This M20 Timing Belt package comes with the two main components to change your E30, E28, or E34 timing belt - OEM Continental belt (1131171361) and an OEM tensioner (11311468743). Both are the highest quality OEM parts that we have trusted for close to twenty years. The timing belt on the M20 engine should be replaced every 50,000 miles.

We would also recommend changing the water pump and your accessory belts at the same time since both are accessible at the front of the engine when you're replacing the timing belt. The Bentley Service Manual is also the perfect companion for this type of job.

The BMW Motorsport Cam Gear retards the exhaust camshaft of the 88-91 M3 and 88-89 M5 and M6. This allows for better exhaust scavenging, which in turn gives a moderate torque increase. This is very useful in day-to-day driving. This cam gear came stock on the EVO2 M3. (+11 lb./ft torque increase at 3000 rpm on M3 and +22 lb./ft on a M5/M6).

Camshafts (Schrick)

The 272-degree Schrick Camshaft is 1 step up from the stock cam. The greater lift and duration will boost horsepower at higher rpm where the stock engine may feel a little flat. This is considered a mild, "street" camshaft so low-end torque does not suffer a lot with this cam. Schrick recommends using upgraded valve springs with this cam.

Oil Pressure Switch (fits most BMWs) (more info)

Having your oil pressure light come on can mean very serious problems. Or it could just be this switch that fails several times over a car's lifespan. By no means should you ignore the warning light but replacing this sensor could be the actual culprit. The other problem with this switch is that oil can leak past its seal. The timing chain tensioner from the 1995 E36 M3 is a great upgrade for other Motorsport models - 1988-1991 E30 M3 and 1989-1995 E34 M5! This tensioner virtually eliminates the cold start-up engine rattle so common with the S14 and S38 engines. It makes the whole engine quieter and smoother. Any new tensioner will accomplish that but the S50 tensioner has several new features that make it superior to the original design. This unit also has a internally loaded spring, so installation is much easier than the old style tensioner (no need to squeeze the spring and hold it while installing). Rocker Arm - E30 325e 325i 325is - E34 525i (M20) (more info)

If there is one weak point to the internals of the M20 engine, it's the camshaft rocker arms. They're actually designed to be the weak link to prevent more extensive damage elsewhere in the valvetrain. The rocker arm actuates the valves as the cam lobe makes contact. But sustained running at high RPM will cause the valves to 'float' or stay open which can lead to contact between the piston and the valves. If this happens too often, it will fatigue and snap the rocker arm. Therefore, any track driven E30 should have the rockers inspected or replaced often, along with a correct valve adjustment. And any high mileage M20 engine is running the risk of failure because of fatigue and weak valve springs. It's also a good idea to use new rocker arms any time a new cam is installed as the cam and the rocker wear together.

Replacement of the rocker arms can be done with the cylinder head in the car but more often, the head is removed. This makes removing the rocker shafts easier. Either way, a new cylinder head gasket set is recommended as it includes all of the gaskets and plugs that you would need. If the head stays on the car, the radiator may need to be removed to allow more access for the shafts to come out. Replacing the engine timing belt is not done at the same time and should be treated as a separate job.

These Febi M20 rocker arms are sold per rocker (order 12 for a complete set). You may also want to replace the eccentric adjusters as it's easy to do and worn eccentrics may prevent you from properly adjusting the valves afterward.
