BMW E34 Engine Fans & Fan Clutches

BMW cooling fans are one of two types - engine mounted mechanical and full electric (not driven by the engine). As the fan spins it draws air from the front of the car, pulls it through the radiator (where the air cools the water vanes in the radiator), and then directs the airflow over and around the engine. The faster you drive the car, the faster air is being drawn through the radiator. But at idle or in traffic, and especially warm days, the lack of airflow could lead to overheating if your fan is malfunctioning. The fan should always be spinning fast. A fan that barely spins at all is a sign of a failed fan clutch and should be replaced right away. The clutch is mounted in the fan and can be replaced on its own. The actual fan rarely goes bad unless one of the blades is damaged. Electric fans require a complete replacement if it's not working (the motor cannot be replaced separately).

This electric auxiliary fan for BMW E31 E32 E34 E36 mounts in front of the radiator and is designed to push air through the A/C Condenser and main radiator. It provides additional cooling for when the car is in traffic. It is a common failure item. If your engine temps are creeping up or if your A/C isn't blowing cold this could be the cause.

This fan is driven by the serpentine belt, engaged by the fan clutch. If you have bad motor mounts, it's quite common for the blades of this fan to make contact with the radiator or radiator shroud, essentially self-destructing the fan into many peices. Be sure to get a new fan clutch, while you are replacing this.

Fan Clutch - E31, E32, E34, E38, E39 with M60/M62 V8

This is the viscous fan clutch for the for the engine fan on M60/M62 V8 engines. When the engine is cool or even at normal operating temperature, the fan clutch partially disengages the engine's mechanically-driven radiator cooling fan. This saves power, since the engine does not have to fully drive the fan. If engine temperature rises above the clutch's engagement temperature setting, the fan becomes fully engaged, thus drawing a higher volume of ambient air through the vehicle's radiator, which in turn serves to maintain or lower the engine coolant temperature to an acceptable level. Typically, when the fan clutch fails the car with tend to overheat at idle or in slow moving traffic.
