Hydraulic Belt Tensioner - E36, E46, E39 6-cyl (more info)

Hydraulic Belt Tensioner for E36, E46, E39 6-cyl models. This is the oil-filled tensioner that keeps the main drive belt in the proper tension. Tensioner Pulley for Main Drive Belt (Water Pump/Alternator/Power Steering) (more info)

This is the tensioner pulley, also known as the adjusting pulley and lower pulley. This pulley is mounted on the belt tensioner near the center of the belt assembly. The upper and lower pulleys are known to be the primary sources for 'belt squealing'. This pulley is also encased in rubber which will crack over time. If left without service the rubber could fail completely, chucking the belt and leaving you stranded. Replacement is a very simple procedure and can be done anytime the fan is off the engine (belt replacement, water pump service, alternator replacement, etc).

This pulley is mounted along with the hydraulic or mechanical belt tensioner but can be replaced on its own. It is used for the main drive belt on the M50-family engines (M50, M50TU, M52, S52, M52TU, M54, M56, and S54 engines). This is the same belt that covers the water pump/alternator/power steering systems. Replacement is a very easy procedure (requires fan removal) and will have your engine purring in no time. Belt replacement is strongly recommended at the same time.

These proved to be an excellent upgrade on our project M3. Smooth as stock idle with a linear increase in horsepower from midrange all the way to redline, Peak gain was +15 HP. There was no loss in low end torque. The Duration of the intake cam is 280 and the exhaust is 272 with 11.6mm lift. These are the new "cast" cams from Schrick they require new rocker arms BMW part # 11 33 7 833 259. Professional installation is a must due to the intricacies with the double vanos.

Schrick Solid Lifter Conversion Kit (convert hydraulic lifters to solid lifters) (more info)

One major hurdle for a track-only car is the limitation of the hydraulic valve lifters in the M50, S50-US, M52, S52-US, M52TU, and M54 engines. These effectively limit your revs to 7200-7300 RPM as the valves 'float' at higher revs, leading to piston-valve contact. By converting to a machined solid lifter, and upgrading other areas of the engine, you can configure the valve train to withstand high RPM running. Not only can you tune for more power, you can help prevent damage during a mild mechanical over-rev.

This kit includes the mechanical spacers to convert hydraulic lifter tappets to solid lifters (like that of the S54 engine). The lifter bucket remains in place with the Schrick solid tappet replacing the original. These work on all M50, M52, S50, S52 and M54 engines and were proven in normally aspirated as well as supercharged engines. A custom camshaft is required.

Professional installation and setup is mandatory as these require complete assembly of the head, checking valve lash, then dis-assembly and machining of the Schrick tappet to spec. This kit includes enough spacers for 24 valves. We also carry individual parts, if you are looking for single pieces. This price is for a full set of 24.

ARP S54 Head Stud Kit (E46M3 / MZ3 / MZ4) (more info)

Virtually every top professional BMW engine builder relies on ARP Pro Series head studs, particularly on the S54 3.2 liter engine. ARP uses a premium grade 8740 alloy that is rated far superior to "aircraft" quality. Each stud is heat-treated to 200,000 psi, ensuring complete heat penetration. ARP studs are threaded after heat-treat, which gives them 1000% (that's ten times!) better fatigue strength than studs threaded prior to heat-treat. Threading the studs after heat-treating is more difficult and costly (as it's harder on tooling) but the results are well worth the effort. These simply are the best S54 head studs we've found for the E46 M3 6 cylinder engines, and we highly recommend them in both the racing and forced induction arena. (Due to the additional clamping force between the head and block, these are IDEAL for turbo charging and supercharging!)

Converting from the factory BMW head bolts to head studs makes it much easier to assemble an engine, especially a racing powerplant which must be serviced frequently (and quickly!), and also ensures proper alignment of the head and gasket. Head studs also provide more accurate and consistent torque loading. Here's why: When you use bolts to secure the head, the fastener is actually being "twisted" while it's being torqued to the proper reading. Accordingly, the bolt is reacting to two different forces simultaneously. A head stud should be installed in a "relaxed" mode -- never crank it in tightly using a jammed nut. If everything is right, the stud should be installed finger tight. Then, when applying torque to the nut, the stud will stretch only on the vertical axis. An information sheet is provided with each set. Kit includes everything pictured -- 14 head bolts, washers, bolts and assembly lubricant.

Genuine BMW Exhaust Camshaft Position Sensor - E46 M3 E39 M5, MZ3, MZ4, Z8 (more info)

Sensor for: Exhaust. One weak point on BMW engines for years has been the cam position reference sensor. On the S54 engine in the E46 M3, M Roadster, and Z4M, there is one sensor for each cam. The sensor tells the computer the position of the cam on cylinder #1. The computer relies on the sensor's information to set injection timing and VANOS control. When a sensor goes bad, the computer loses track of what position the cam is in. While the engine will continue to run (taking its measurements from the crank position sensor), the entire system is thrown off. The engine may stumble or run rough, but not misfire, and there will be a loss of performance.

Each cam sensor also doubles as a sensor for the VANOS. So when the sensor goes bad, the VANOS will revert to a safe mode and will not advance.

While the engine will still run with a faulty cam position sensor, it's not running in its finest tune. The DME will have fault codes related to the cam sensor or for the VANOS. This is the Original BMW sensor with a new o-ring.

Genuine BMW Intake Camshaft Sensor - E46 M3, MZ3, Z4 M (more info)

Sensor for: Intake. A common failure - On the S54 engine in the E46 M3, M Roadster, and Z4M, there is one sensor for each cam. The sensor tells the computer the position of the cam on cylinder #1. The computer relies on the sensor's information to set injection timing and VANOS control. When a sensor goes bad, the computer loses track of what position the cam is in. While the engine will continue to run (taking its measurements from the crank position sensor), the entire system is thrown off. The engine may stumble or run rough, but not misfire, and there will be a loss of performance.

Each cam sensor also doubles as a sensor for the VANOS. So when the sensor goes bad, the VANOS will revert to a safe mode and will not advance.

While the engine will still run with a faulty cam position sensor, it's not running in its finest tune. The DME will have fault codes related to the cam sensor or for the VANOS. This is the Original BMW sensor with a new o-ring.

Oil Pressure Switch (fits most BMWs) (more info)

Having your oil pressure light come on can mean very serious problems. Or it could just be this switch that fails several times over a car's lifespan. By no means should you ignore the warning light but replacing this sensor could be the actual culprit. The other problem with this switch is that oil can leak past its seal. Constant Pressure Valve for E46 M3, MZ3 (S54), and Z4 M (more info)

Oil leak on the E46 M3? The constant pressure valve, or oil pressure relief valve, is the most likely reason. This screw valve, located on the exhaust side of the engine block, has a steel o-ring that becomes flat over time, allowing oil to leak around it and down the back of your engine, transmission, undertray, and eventually to your driveway. If you see an oil leak around your transmission and think it's the rear main seal or from the oil pan, try replacing this first. Replacement is the only remedy as the washer on the screw has deformed in shape. The constant pressure valve helps to keep oil up in the cylinder head so you want a direct replacement part - not an aftermarket 'solution'. This is an Original BMW part. One required.

Idle Control Valve - M50, M52, M52TU, M54 (more info)

Rough or hunting idle? Stalling? Sputtering? These are all symptoms of poor fuel delivery or a vacuum leak in your intake system. The idle control valve is one of the areas that you can check to fix these issues. The ICV is basically a electrically-driven throttle body that regulates the air/fuel mixture at light throttle openings. Over time, the ICV can become gummed up with oil and carbon, resulting in slow or blocked operation. Worst case, the electric motor inside will freeze which will stall the engine.

The ICV will typically need to be cleaned or replaced every 100k miles. It can be cleaned with carb cleaner but for seriously dirty or old ICVs you may want to replace the whole unit with a new one. There is also a hard rubber seal between the ICV and the manifold and this should be replaced as well. You may also want to replace the Crankcase Vent Valve as it can also fill up with oil and carbon and replacement can be done at the same time as the ICV.

Add a new ICV to your M50 Manifold Upgrade to save time and money!

It allows us to use a mechanically operated M50 throttle body instead of the M54 drive by wire throttle body used on E46 motors. This fan is driven by the serpentine belt, engaged by the fan clutch. If you have bad motor mounts, it's quite common for the blades of this fan to make contact with the radiator or radiator shroud, essentially self-destructing the fan into many peices. Fuel System

E46 M3 Fuel Pump (more info)

A fuel pump failure in the E46M3 can cause lack of power and a low-RPM stumble. Its a fairly common problem, the problem fades away as the revs build and the engine warms up. It's especially noticeable in the Winter and when the outside temperature is low. While a number of things can cause this, you should first change the fuel filter (especially if it's been over 30,000 miles. The fuel pump is another likely source of the trouble. The pump is easy to change by accessing the top of the fuel tank under the backseat. This is a new factory BMW fuel pump.

ARP Connecting Rod Bolt Kit - E36 M3 S50/S52 (US only), E46 323/325 and more (see list) (more info)

Set of 12 ProSeries connecting rod bolts, made by ARP -- the world leader in fastener technology. Each bolt is made of ARP2000 material, which exceeds the strength of 8740 Chrome Moly, and is able to achieve clamp load at 220,000psi. ARP2000 fasteners are used widely in motorsport and drag racing as an upgrade from 8740 Chrome Moly in both steel and aluminum rods. These are simply the best connecting rod bolts available, making them ideal for ultra high performance, racing and forced induction applications.

This set replaces the factory BMW rod bolt number 11-24-1-739-728 (11241739728) which measures 44mm in length. The 44mm BMW rod bolt was used on all US spec E36 M3 (3.0 and 3.2 liter), 1999-2000 E46 323i/323Ci, 2001-2005 325i/325Ci, Z3 1.9,2.5 and 3.2, as well as Z4 2.5. It was also used on SOME of the M50 2.5 liter engines from 1992-1995 -- but check before ordering! Opened ARP bolt kits are not returnable. If your M50 2.5 liter engine has 53mm rod bolts, you will require kit part# 201-6301 instead.

TMS solid mount kits will hold up to the abuse that a powerful, high revving race motor will induce. The main benefit is that they reduce the torque and power lost from rubber mounting movement. Rubber mounts absorb the energy and vibrations produced from the torque of the motor. By not allowing that motion and energy to be absorbed, more power is transmitted faster. The solid engine mounts locate the engine in the original orientation, but 5mm lower, and the transmission mounts are 1mm lower than the original mounts and are also located in the original orientation. This lowers the car’s center of gravity and improves the overall handling of the car. Solid mounting kits should be used for race only applications. These are the exact mounts used our SPEED World Challenge race cars. Subframe reinforcement kits are highly recommended to go along with this kit to reduce the risk of damage to the subframe. We highly recommend using the transmission and engine mounts together and installing this as a complete kit. Mixing a rubber mount with a metal mount will cause undue stress on the mouting points. NEW, updated design allows for more applications! The TMS Oil Cooler Fitting kit allows much more flexibility in the routing of oil cooler lines. Standard oil coolers utilize “hard lines” which can cause fitment issues for cars with superchargers, Accusumps, or other aftermarket performance parts. Our kit replaces the oil cooler hard lines with two TMS engineered -10 AN fittings, mounting bracket, and O-rings. Flexible braided hoses can then be run to the oil cooler which eliminates routing issues from supercharges, intakes, and other components. Cooling System Overhaul Package for E46 M3 (more info)

As the E46 M3 gets on in years and mileage, the cooling system will be one of the areas that needs the most attention. We have packaged all of the major cooling components into one overhaul kit, including: OEM radiator, OE BMW water pump, OEM thermostat, hoses, gaskets, o-rings, and clamps.

We have found that the E46 M3 can develop serious cooling issues, even on daily driven street cars. Thermostat With O-Rings - E46 M3 (more info)

Replacement stock thermostat for E46 M3, Z3M w S54 engine, Z4M. The thermostat can be replaced on the E46 M3 without removing the water pump. This can save you money if the pump still has life left on it but the thermostat needs to be done now. Symptoms of a bad thermostat include an erratic temp gauge and a fault code. When replacing the thermostat, there are three o-rings that will likely need to be replaced – between the thermostat and the water pump housing, and two on the coolant tube going to the head. We also recommend new hoses, clamps, and BMW coolant. Replacement should take about one hour.

Note: even though this can be done without replacing the water pump, the job involves removing the same items to access this area. And opening the thermostat housing will spill a lot of coolant. In other words, if you don't replace the water pump at the same time, you're going to repeat this process all over again when the pump needs replacing. We offer a complete overhaul package that covers everything you need if you want to it all at once.

Underdrive Power Pulley Kit for E46 323i/328i 99-00, E46 325i, E46 330i

As used on our racecars and street cars, these are engineered not only to be the best pulley kits on the market but also to provide the best compromise between performance and reliability. Specifically, we have designed them to underdrive the water pump, power steering pump and alternator*. Adding these is like getting FREE HORSEPOWER - there are no downsides and underdriving each of these accessories has been proven safe through years of on and off-track use. We do not believe it is safe to change the crankshaft pulley due to the potential harm to the crankshaft. These kits provide a 10%-20% overall reduction in driving your car's systems and have been dyno-tested with a gain of up to 11hp.

Kit includes water pump, power steering, alternator pulleys and belt. The T-6061 hard anodized aluminum pulleys account for a 10 to 20-percent decrease in accessory speeds, reducing the load on the engine but still maintaining a safe margin for reliability on all components. Installation involves removing the fan for easy access to the front of the engine. The main drive belt comes off easy and each pulley is mounted with Allen head bolts. Typical installation time is 1.5 hours. New main drive belt is included. The pulleys were good for 10.7hp at 6960 rpm and 8.1 lb-ft of torque at 5550 on the 1995 M3.

*Alternator pulleys - we offer two kits, one for the performance minded individual and one for the serious audiophile. If you have a significant additional load on the alternator, from aftermarket audio amplifiers, you will not want to underdrive the alternator. Thus, we simply lighten that pulley rather then underdrive it. Choose from the menu below if you have a stock or an upgraded stereo.

BMW used both BOSCH and VALEO brand alternators, which use different pulleys. TMS E46 M3 Racing Pulley is designed to achieve three goals: gain horsepower, reduce alternator and power steering pump wear, and lower power steering fluid temperatures. Due to constant high revolutions of the S54 power steering pump when on the track, we designed our racing power steering pulley to slow down the pump. VANOS Filter for S54 Engine - E46 M3, MZ3, Z4 M (more info)

The S54 engine uses BMW's VANOS variable-valve timing mechanism. There is a filter inside the oil pressure valve that prevents contaminents from lodging in the system. Replacing or cleaning the filter is simple insurance to prevent VANOS failure. And a clean filter allows oil to pass unobstructed, meaning more efficient VANOS operation. This tiny filter slips on the end of the oil pressure valve, located on the side of the VANOS unit. Replacement is a simple procedure with new o-rings included.

VANOS Oil Pressure Valve for S54 - E46 M3, MZ3, Z4 M (more info)

The engine oil is the blood of the VANOS system. Without a strong flow of oil, the VANOS will ultimately fail. Oiling problems killed a lof of the VANOS units on previous BMW engines. - don't let it happen to your S54. Proper maintenace will avoid a costly repair bill in the future. Vanos Unit with Solenoid - Rebuilt - S54 - E46 M3, Z3M, Z4M (more info)

The E46 M3, the Z3 M Coupe/Roadster and the E85/86 MZ4 Coupe/Roadster all came equipped with the S54 engine which was a much more complex engine than the earlier US Spec M3 had. The vanos on the S54 also evolved into a more complex unit and has it's own set of inherent problems that many S54 owners will run into eventually. The S54 Vanos controls both the intake and exhaust camshafts to improve performance, torque, idle characteristics and emissions. A high pressure (1200psi) control system is used to ensure responsive and accurate camshaft adjustments required by the high performance M engine. The back of the vanos houses a radial oil pump to produce the 1200psi of oil pressure. This pump is mechanically driven by a hub on the exhaust camshaft, which is one of the common failure points on this engine. The vanos also uses 4 solenoids which are attahed to the bottom of the unit in a non-rebuildable aluminum case. These solenoids are very sensitive to oil pressure and can easily become clogged or damaged over time due to contaminates in the oil. We highly recommend changing the oil every 5000 miles and only using the BMW 10w60 High Performance oil to prolong the life of the vanos. Typically the S54 vanos does not exhibit the common diesel rattle under normal operation. If you notice that your engine has suddenly become noisy we recommomend that the car not be driven any more than necessary until the source of the noise can be determined. This is an original E46 M3 with S54 engine waterpump, its the latest updated version from BMW - and they are proud of it - thats for sure, look at the LIST price ! There are no aftermarket waterpumps that we would suggest in this application - this is the best (and only) choice. We suggest getting all the gaskets and orings at the same time (see below)

Water Pump - M50, M52, M52TU, and M54 Engines with Metal Impeller (more info)

The early M50/M52 engines had a serious weak point: the water pump. BMW originally used a plastic impeller in the waterpump. This would degrade over time and eventually break apart. Your car overheats immediately. This water pump is an updated one with a metal impeller. BMW has since released a water pump with a composte impeller that does not have the same issues and is just as reliable as the metal impeller version. But for piece of mind, the metal impeller is tough to beat.

Water Pump Pulley - E46 E39 Z3 (more info)

This water pump pulley mounts between the engine fan and the water pump and can break while replacing the water pump or fan / fan clutch. Replacing this item can be a good preventative measure.
