    Our Stage 1 kit featuring a cold-air intake kit and performance software. The aFE intake is made from high-quality materials, reducing underhood temperatures and not contributing to heat soak of the air filter. aFe's Stage 2 Intake uses an oiled cotton air filter for maximum air flow and excellent filtration. The kit is supplied complete with heat shield, ABS plastic intake tube, sealing materials, hardware, and install instructions.

    The software is tuned by BMW tuning whiz Jim Conforti and supplied with the Shark Injector. The Shark Injector is a do-it-yourself reflash tool that plugs into the OBD diagnostic plug in your dash. With the push of a button, it will copy your stock software and reflash your computer with the performance tune. You can set it back to stock at any time by following the same procedure.

    Tensioner Pulley for Main Drive Belt (Water Pump/Alternator/Power Steering)   (more info)
    This is the tensioner pulley, also known as the adjusting pulley and lower pulley. This pulley is mounted on the belt tensioner near the center of the belt assembly. The upper and lower pulleys are known to be the primary sources for 'belt squealing'. This pulley is also encased in rubber which will crack over time. If left without service the rubber could fail completely, chucking the belt and leaving you stranded. Replacement is a very simple procedure and can be done anytime the fan is off the engine (belt replacement, water pump service, alternator replacement, etc).

    This pulley is mounted along with the hydraulic or mechanical belt tensioner but can be replaced on its own. It is used for the main drive belt on the M50-family engines (M50, M50TU, M52, S52, M52TU, M54, M56, and S54 engines). This is the same belt that covers the water pump/alternator/power steering systems. Replacement is a very easy procedure (requires fan removal) and will have your engine purring in no time. Belt replacement is strongly recommended at the same time.

    Cylinder Heads
    ARP S54 Head Stud Kit (E46M3 / MZ3 / MZ4)   (more info)
    Virtually every top professional BMW engine builder relies on ARP Pro Series head studs, particularly on the S54 3.2 liter engine. ARP uses a premium grade 8740 alloy that is rated far superior to "aircraft" quality. Each stud is heat-treated to 200,000 psi, ensuring complete heat penetration. ARP studs are threaded after heat-treat, which gives them 1000% (that's ten times!) better fatigue strength than studs threaded prior to heat-treat. Threading the studs after heat-treating is more difficult and costly (as it's harder on tooling) but the results are well worth the effort. These simply are the best S54 head studs we've found for the E46 M3 6 cylinder engines, and we highly recommend them in both the racing and forced induction arena. (Due to the additional clamping force between the head and block, these are IDEAL for turbo charging and supercharging!)

    Converting from the factory BMW head bolts to head studs makes it much easier to assemble an engine, especially a racing powerplant which must be serviced frequently (and quickly!), and also ensures proper alignment of the head and gasket. Head studs also provide more accurate and consistent torque loading. Here's why: When you use bolts to secure the head, the fastener is actually being "twisted" while it's being torqued to the proper reading. Accordingly, the bolt is reacting to two different forces simultaneously. A head stud should be installed in a "relaxed" mode -- never crank it in tightly using a jammed nut. If everything is right, the stud should be installed finger tight. Then, when applying torque to the nut, the stud will stretch only on the vertical axis. An information sheet is provided with each set. Kit includes everything pictured -- 14 head bolts, washers, bolts and assembly lubricant.

    Sensor for: Exhaust. One weak point on BMW engines for years has been the cam position reference sensor. On the S54 engine in the E46 M3, M Roadster, and Z4M, there is one sensor for each cam. The sensor tells the computer the position of the cam on cylinder #1. The computer relies on the sensor's information to set injection timing and VANOS control. When a sensor goes bad, the computer loses track of what position the cam is in. While the engine will continue to run (taking its measurements from the crank position sensor), the entire system is thrown off.     Having your oil pressure light come on can mean very serious problems. Or it could just be this switch that fails several times over a car's lifespan. By no means should you ignore the warning light but replacing this sensor could be the actual culprit. The other problem with this switch is that oil can leak past its seal.     This relay is used for the SMG system on the E46 M3 and various applications including secondary air systems on other BMW's. If you find that your SMG-equipped E46 M3 is not starting, this is one of the first places to check as it controls power to the hydraulic unit (the car will not start without hydraulics).     Constant Pressure Valve for E46 M3, MZ3 (S54), and Z4 M   (more info)
    Oil leak on the E46 M3? The constant pressure valve, or oil pressure relief valve, is the most likely reason. This screw valve, located on the exhaust side of the engine block, has a steel o-ring that becomes flat over time, allowing oil to leak around it and down the back of your engine, transmission, undertray, and eventually to your driveway. If you see an oil leak around your transmission and think it's the rear main seal or from the oil pan, try replacing this first. Replacement is the only remedy as the washer on the screw has deformed in shape. The constant pressure valve helps to keep oil up in the cylinder head so you want a direct replacement part - not an aftermarket 'solution'. This is an Original BMW part. One required.

    Idle Control Valve - M50, M52, M52TU, M54   (more info)
    Rough or hunting idle? Stalling? Sputtering? These are all symptoms of poor fuel delivery or a vacuum leak in your intake system. The idle control valve is one of the areas that you can check to fix these issues. The ICV is basically a electrically-driven throttle body that regulates the air/fuel mixture at light throttle openings. Over time, the ICV can become gummed up with oil and carbon, resulting in slow or blocked operation. Worst case, the electric motor inside will freeze which will stall the engine.

    The ICV will typically need to be cleaned or replaced every 100k miles. It can be cleaned with carb cleaner but for seriously dirty or old ICVs you may want to replace the whole unit with a new one. There is also a hard rubber seal between the ICV and the manifold and this should be replaced as well. You may also want to replace the Crankcase Vent Valve as it can also fill up with oil and carbon and replacement can be done at the same time as the ICV.

    Made in the USAThe “Quick-Start” feature recently implemented by Bosch in their Motorsport ECUs is a more economical feature since the engine can now start from anywhere in the firing order. Conventional previous systems would require a full 360° rotation for the ECU to synchronize the firing order before allowing the engine to start. The Bosch Motorsport system is much more efficient as it does not waste battery power or add undue wear to the starter and alternator. The faster start is also much safer for critical engine components as there is less cranking with low oil pressure.     This set replaces the factory BMW rod bolt number 11-24-1-739-728 (11241739728) which measures 44mm in length.     Thermostat With O-Rings - E46 M3   (more info)
    Replacement stock thermostat for E46 M3, Z3M w S54 engine, Z4M. The thermostat can be replaced on the E46 M3 without removing the water pump. This can save you money if the pump still has life left on it but the thermostat needs to be done now. Symptoms of a bad thermostat include an erratic temp gauge and a fault code. When replacing the thermostat, there are three o-rings that will likely need to be replaced – between the thermostat and the water pump housing, and two on the coolant tube going to the head. We also recommend new hoses, clamps, and BMW coolant. Replacement should take about one hour.

    Note: even though this can be done without replacing the water pump, the job involves removing the same items to access this area. And opening the thermostat housing will spill a lot of coolant. In other words, if you don't replace the water pump at the same time, you're going to repeat this process all over again when the pump needs replacing. We offer a complete overhaul package that covers everything you need if you want to it all at once.

    The S54 engine uses BMW's VANOS variable-valve timing mechanism. There is a filter inside the oil pressure valve that prevents contaminents from lodging in the system. Replacing or cleaning the filter is simple insurance to prevent VANOS failure. And a clean filter allows oil to pass unobstructed, meaning more efficient VANOS operation. This tiny filter slips on the end of the oil pressure valve, located on the side of the VANOS unit. Replacement is a simple procedure with new o-rings included.

    The engine oil is the blood of the VANOS system. Without a strong flow of oil, the VANOS will ultimately fail. Oiling problems killed a lof of the VANOS units on previous BMW engines. - don't let it happen to your S54. Proper maintenace will avoid a costly repair bill in the future.     Vanos Unit with Solenoid - Rebuilt - S54 - E46 M3, Z3M, Z4M   (more info)
    The E46 M3, the Z3 M Coupe/Roadster and the E85/86 MZ4 Coupe/Roadster all came equipped with the S54 engine which was a much more complex engine than the earlier US Spec M3 had. The vanos on the S54 also evolved into a more complex unit and has it's own set of inherent problems that many S54 owners will run into eventually. The S54 Vanos controls both the intake and exhaust camshafts to improve performance, torque, idle characteristics and emissions. A high pressure (1200psi) control system is used to ensure responsive and accurate camshaft adjustments required by the high performance M engine. The back of the vanos houses a radial oil pump to produce the 1200psi of oil pressure. This pump is mechanically driven by a hub on the exhaust camshaft, which is one of the common failure points on this engine. The vanos also uses 4 solenoids which are attahed to the bottom of the unit in a non-rebuildable aluminum case. These solenoids are very sensitive to oil pressure and can easily become clogged or damaged over time due to contaminates in the oil. We highly recommend changing the oil every 5000 miles and only using the BMW 10w60 High Performance oil to prolong the life of the vanos. Typically the S54 vanos does not exhibit the common diesel rattle under normal operation. If you notice that your engine has suddenly become noisy we recommomend that the car not be driven any more than necessary until the source of the noise can be determined. This S54 vanos comes fully rebuilt with brand new solenoids and solenoid valves. This is the exact same package the dealers sells, but at half the cost.

    The early M50/M52 engines had a serious weak point: the water pump. BMW originally used a plastic impeller in the waterpump. This would degrade over time and eventually break apart. Your car overheats immediately. This water pump is an updated one with a metal impeller. BMW has since released a water pump with a composte impeller that does not have the same issues and is just as reliable as the metal impeller version. But for piece of mind, the metal impeller is tough to beat.

    Water Pump Pulley - E46 E39 Z3   (more info)
    This is the stock water pump pulley that mounts between the engine fan and the water pump. We have seen these plastic or composite pulleys crack around the mounting bolt holes. If left un-noticed the whole pulley can fall apart which will immediately disable the car and possibly leave you stranded. It can also break while performing other work around it such as removing the fan, replacing the water pump, or even just replacing the belt. Replacing this pulley while doing the water pump can be a good preventative measure.
