Replacement ignition coils. Your car's ignition coil(s) is just as important as your spark plugs. Problems with a coil can range from a simple misfire to a no-start condition on the engine so it's important to maintain the coils just as you would any other ignition component.
Starting with the M50 engines in 1991, BMW's igntion systems use an individual coil for each cylinder (coil-on-plug ignition). While the improved performance and smoothness is without question, these coils have a shorter lifespan than the older single-coil designs.

Ignition Coil for S54 Engine - E46 M3, MZ3, MZ4
(more info) This is a stock replacement coil for the S54 engine in the E46 M3, MZ3, and Z4 M. This coil is the correct to use under BMW’s service bulletin for this engine (SI B 12 24 05). It's manufactured by ERA, an OE supplier to BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, and others. Symptons of a coil going bad include a misfire, rough running, and usually a SES light with a fault code stored in the DME. Replacing the coils yourself is cheap and easy to do. You could even keep one with you as a spare. This is good advice as a bad coil can happen at any time with no warning. These are the best coils we have found and they’re the same parts the TMS Race Team used on our Koni Challenge race cars.
