BMW MZ4 VANOS Units & Parts

The BMW VANOS system (variable Nockenwellensteuerung - variable camshaft timing) was introduced in the early 1990s as a way of altering timing based on RPM and engine load to improve torque delivery, fuel economy, and engine smoothness. The first systems were single-VANOS and operated the intake cam only. Beginning in 1999, double-VANOS was introduced that did both intake and exhaust banks (on both inline-6 and V8 engines).

By 150,000 miles the original VANOS actuator solenoids, seals, and o-rings are usually due for a complete replacement. Some individual pieces may have been replaced already. Signs of a dying unit are loud marble-like rattles from the front of the engine, loss of power and mid-range torque, poor fuel economy, and fault codes for misfires and VANOS-related sensors. VANOS sensors, solenoids, and some other parts are available separately. VANOS units can be rebuilt by sourcing the seals and o-rings on their own but that process still requires expert mechanical knowledge and special tools. We prefer to offer complete, rebuilt VANOS units to make the replacement as seamless and trouble-free as possible for you.

Note: all VANOS systems require special tools for correct repair and replacement. These tools are BMW specific. If you do not possess these tools we strongly advise you to bring the parts to a qualified and experienced BMW technician who does.

This is the steel/rubber VANOS gasket between the VANOS unit and cylinder head. It's a must-have item when replacing the VANOS unit and also a potential leak point on the S54. The original gasket cannot be re-used so make sure you have a new one on hand.

This item fits the following BMWs:
    2001-2006 E46 BMW M3
    2001-2002 Z3 BMW Z3 M Roadster M Coupe
    2003-2008 E85 BMW Z4 M Roadster M Coupe
    Part #: 11367831938
    Price: $15.95 (USD)

The S54 engine uses BMW's VAN0S variable-valve timing mechanism. There is a filter inside the oil pressure valve that prevents contaminents from lodging in the system. Replacing or cleaning the filter is simple insurance to prevent VAN0S failure. And a clean filter allows oil to pass unobstructed, meaning more efficient VAN0S operation. This tiny filter slips on the end of the oil pressure valve, located on the side of the VAN0S unit. Kit includes part numbers 11361401971, 11311318659, and 11361403325. Replacement is a simple procedure with new o-rings included.

    Applications:
    2001-2002 Z3 M Coupe, M Roadster with S54 engine
    2001-2006 E46 M3 coupe, convertible
    2006-2009 Z4 M Coupe, M Roadster

The engine oil is the blood of the VAN0S system. Without a strong flow of oil, the VAN0S will ultimately fail. Oiling problems killed a lof of the VAN0S units on previous BMW engines. - don't let it happen to your S54. Proper maintenace will avoid a costly repair bill in the future. Replacement VAN0S units are over $2500! Replacing the filter or this entire pressure valve is the smart step to take. This is a new oil pressure valve with new seals and a new filter.

    Applications:
    2001-2002 Z3 M Coupe, M Roadster with S54 engine
    2001-2006 E46 M3 coupe, convertible
    2006-2009 Z4 M Coupe, M Roadster

This sealing flange is located between the VAN0S adjusting unit and the VAN0S solenoid on the S54 engine. It can be the source of oil leaks and should be replaced when the the VAN0S solenoid is.

This item fits the following BMWs:
    2001-2006 E46 BMW M3
    2001-2002 Z3 BMW M Roadster M Coupe (S54)
    2006-2008 E85 BMW Z4 M Roadster M Coupe
    Part #: 11367831906
    Price: $25.95 (USD)

This is the solenoid switch that activates the VAN0S system on the E46 M3 and Z3/Z4 M S54 engine. Without this switch activating (and de-activating) the VAN0S you will experience poor performance and torque output, worse fuel economy, fault codes for VAN0S operation and misfires. Thankfully, this part is relatively easy to replace and they generally last a long time. This is the Genuine BMW solenoid, not an overseas knockoff, so the quality is first-rate. This is the solenoid used on S54 engines.

If you are looking to install the VAN0S solenoid, you should also order the o-ring from the options below. Also check for leaks from the VAN0S oil line and seals. Now is a good time to access and replace it if it's leaking.

This solenoid valve fits the following BMWs:
    2001-2006 E46 BMW M3
    2001-2002 Z3 BMW M Roadster M Coupe - S54 engine
    2006-2008 Z4 BMW M Roadster M Coupe
    Part #: 11367839180
    Price: $781.95 (USD)
The E46 M3, the Z3 M Coupe/Roadster and the E85/86 MZ4 Coupe/Roadster all came equipped with the S54 engine which was a much more complex engine than the earlier US Spec M3 had. The VAN0S on the S54 also evolved into a more complex unit and has it's own set of inherent problems that many S54 owners will run into eventually. The S54 VAN0S controls both the intake and exhaust camshafts to improve performance, torque, idle characteristics and emissions. A high pressure (1200psi) control system is used to ensure responsive and accurate camshaft adjustments required by the high performance M engine. The back of the VAN0S houses a radial oil pump to produce the 1200psi of oil pressure. This pump is mechanically driven by a hub on the exhaust camshaft, which is one of the common failure points on this engine. The VAN0S also uses 4 solenoids which are attahed to the bottom of the unit in a non-rebuildable aluminum case. These solenoids are very sensitive to oil pressure and can easily become clogged or damaged over time due to contaminates in the oil. We highly recommend changing the oil every 5000 miles and only using the BMW 10w60 High Performance oil to prolong the life of the VAN0S. Typically the S54 VAN0S does not exhibit the common diesel rattle under normal operation. If you notice that your engine has suddenly become noisy we recommomend that the car not be driven any more than necessary until the source of the noise can be determined. This S54 VAN0S comes fully rebuilt with brand new solenoids and solenoid valves. This is the exact same package the dealers sells, but at half the cost.
