    BMW Z8 Shark Injector Performance Software, 1996-2005 Models

    The Shark Injector is an amazing hand-held unit that plugs into your car’s diagnostic port and re-flashes the computer with performance software. The software was developed by renowned BMW tuner Jim Conforti, who has nearly 20 years of BMW engine tuning experience. The Shark Injector is one of the safest and most cost-effective enhancements you can do – offering features and results that other upgrades simply cannot touch. The Shark Injector will also be upgrade-able through its own USB port, allowing you to upgrade to different software as your needs and modifications change (under development).

    This software is a major refinement of the stock software. It makes the car much easier to drive with less hesitation, more torque, and incredibly smooth operation. A lot of tuning has been done at the low RPM ranges to improve response. The car won’t hesitate or lag, making the car easier to drive. And with the extra torque you can drive in a higher gear and not have to downshift as often. Theoretically this means better fuel mileage too!

    How does it work? The Shark Injector makes changes to the stock BMW software in the areas of fuel enrichment, transition fueling, camshaft timing, ignition timing, and VANOS control to take full advantage of 91+ octane fuel. BMW ‘de-tuned’ cars for the North American market in the event inferior fuel was used. We reverse those changes to gain more horsepower and torque. 91 or higher octane fuel must be used.

    How does it install? The Shark Injector plugs into your car’s On Board Diagnostic (OBD) port, located under the dashboard in most cars. At the push of a button the Injector begins communicating with your car’s computer. The Shark handles everything from that point on – reading and copying the stock software, re-loading its own performance version, and checking its work along the way. The whole operation is completed in under 20 minutes. A battery charger with a continuous 10-20amp charge is required (available below if you do not currently own one).   • Performance software is a must-have upgrade on your E39 M5 and you won't find an easier and better software solution than the Shark Injector. There's no removal of the ECU and shipping, no cables, no laptop required - only a battery charger! Installation takes just a few minutes and your engine will perform like never before!

    The M5 performance software was developed on the dyno to create maximum power and torque using premium 91+ octane fuel and revising the torque limiters in the ECU. The software makes changes to the ECU's maps and algorithms for fuel injection, ignition timing, VANOS and camshaft movement, and transitional fueling. We modify the maps for part throttle and full throttle so you get better response and more torque at all RPM. The stock software artificially limits torque output, especially in the first three gears. We raised the torque limiters in all gears so there is more torque available. You will see an immediate difference as soon as you leave your driveway! Choose between a stock 7,000 or raised 7,400 RPM rev limit. The top speed limiter is removed. By fine tuning these maps we've been able to improve the S62 engine beyond what BMW did by making more power and torque and a smoother-running engine.

    We used several E39 M5s on our dyno to establish what the average/typical power numbers are. The dyno charts on the right are from the same car - a 2003 E39 M5 that was already equipped with intakes, mufflers, and running 93 octane. For our Shark Injector dynos we made baseline runs with the stock software and then runs in 3rd gear and 4th gear. The only changes to the car was the Shark Injector software. Why did we post dyno runs in different gears? The 3rd gear run shows the torque gain with the new torque limiters in the software. The 4th gear run is posted to be consistent with the industry-standard of dyno-ing cars in 4th gear. Note: comparing dyno results and wheel horsepower numbers from one shop to another is not advised. What really matters is the gain from stock to modified from the same car on the same dyno.

With the battery charger supplying power, press the Upgrade button and within minutes the ECU is reflashed with the new performance tune. No other software product on the market comes close to how easy it is to install. You can use the Restore button to re-install the stock BMW software at any time. Detailed instructions are included.     * This Shark Injector will disable the flow output of the Secondary Air Injection system (SAI), an infamous flaw that affects all M5s. This software will prevent fault codes and check engine lights due to blockages of the SAI system due to carbon build-up. One of the causes of SAI faults is when the ECU detects low output from the air pump. The Shark software will no longer monitor the output of the pump, therefore the fault will never occur. This software does not disable the air pump altogether (necessary to preserve your catalytic converters) and does not "fix" exisiting SAI performance (you may still need a new air pump).     A capable battery charger is required for the installation. The charger provides backup power supply to the regular car battery during installation. It must be capable of holding a continuous 10amp charge for the full installation (15-20 minutes).
    The minimum octane fuel for this software is 91.

    Product Options:
    Octane. Choose either 91 or 93 minimum octane. For 93 we can be more aggressive with the timing and get more power. But you must have 93+ octane available, using the 93 version with anything less is not recommended.
    Sport Mode Memory. This option will remember if you left the car in Sport Mode or not. When you restart the car it will be in the last setting you used. This is perfect for owners who use Sport Mode all the time. You won't have to remember to press the button each time you start the car.
    DSC/Sport Mode. This option will make Sport Mode active only when DSC is turned off. The Sport Mode button is disabled altogether so the only way to get Sport is to disable DSC.

I even think the retune leaves less smoot on the tailpipe. I always was suspicion of the black smoot as an engine that wasn't tuned correctly. No more smoot after a 4 hour jaunt."

    Z8doc: "Decided to purchase the Conforti Shark Injector software into the Z8 last week. All in all a very easy thing to do and just about anyone should be able to do, even if you have a minimum of skills. For me, the overall responsiveness and driving pleasure is greatly enhanced and in sport button off mode, is similar to the OEM Sport Button ON setting so when you push the Sport Button now, you REALLY feel the change in Throttle response in the seat of your pants. Again, this will probably change from person to person a bit. It is relatively cheap upgrade (less than $400 including shipping) and given how easy it is to install, I give it a 2 thumb up approval. If you have the Dxxxn Stage One, this is an improvement over that as Stage One only changes the rev limiter and eliminates the top speed limit. The Conforti actually changes the thottle body response too and you definitely notice it."

Advances made in the latest generation "USB" Shark Injector now make it possible for YOU to apply this type of update from your home computer, eliminating the hassle of shipping and waiting for your Shark Injector.

    This cable, when combined with any Windows based PC (or Mac running Windows via Bootcamp, VMware, Parallels, etc) and a SOON-TO-BE RELEASED Software Update application allows updates to be applied to the Shark Injector's programming. As periodic updates are released, we'll be able to email you updates to your Conforti Shark Injector, free of charge.

    If you're planning on using the Shark Injector to add performance engine software to your BMW, a battery charger such as this one is required. The charger supplements the vehicle battery and provides uninterrupted power during the flashing process. This charger comes with a 20A boost mode for 30 minutes which should be enough time to complete the Shark Injector installation. Other chargers with manual power and timer controls are also acceptable (most shops will have a suitable charger for flashing vehicles).
