This is a compete cooling system overhaul kit, which includes all the common M54 cooling system failure parts bundled into a complete package. This cooling system package is for the 2003-2005 Z4 Roadster.
The Z4 cooling system is much like that of the sister 3 series. Several of the primary cooling components are prone to failure within 60k miles (or less in many cases). A failure in the cooling system can lead to overheating and catastrophic engine failure. Don't gamble your engine! By replacing these core items preventatively, such as the radiator & waterpump, you are defusing what could be a ticking cooling system time bomb. And if you've had a failure of one of these parts, now is the time to refresh your cooling system. Our kit includes one OEM Behr radiator, an Original BMW water pump (with updated composite impeller), thermostat (complete with housing), radiator cap, and new hoses.
Optional items (which can be added below):

Part #: Z4-M54-COOLING-PACKAGE
Price: $396.62 (USD)
This Cooling Kit for the 1987 E30 325i covers all of the major replacement parts for the original cooling system. We start with an OEM Behr radiator and then you choose the additional parts you need to replace next. Add hoses, sensors, water pumps, thermostats, gaskets, hose clamps, and more. We also sell the correct Original BMW antifreeze to finish off the job.
Of the systems in your E30, the cooling system is not where you want to let slide or skip maintenance. Almost nothing will ruin your day more than an overheating engine and it's usually at the absolute worse time. Maintaining the cooling system is easy and you can do most or all of the work yourself with ordinary tools. There's no reason not to address a leaky or out of date cooling system right away.
Top Turner Tip!On the 1987 325i, pay particular attention to the alternator fan blades and the clearance to the lower radiator hose. As the engine shifts on worn motor mounts, and the alternator twists on worn bushings, the cooling blades can slice right through the hose. Replace the alternator bushings and use our motor mount reinforcements. Or convert the whole system to the 1988+ cooling system which moves the lower hose to the other side of the radiator.
To save you time and money, we recommend replacing major components with related parts.
Radiator with upper and lower hoses to thermostat.
Thermostat with o-ring and housing gasket.

1987 E30 BMW 325i 325ic 325is
Part #: E30-325i-87-COOLING-PACKAGE
Price: $169.95 (USD)
This cooling package for the E30 M3 consists of all of the major components on the S14's cooling system. There are no major weak points to the E30's cooling system, unless you count skipped maintenance. The entire system is serviceable in individual components so you don't need to buy a complete package of parts. Many of the indivdual parts are on our site but we have setup this package to cover all or most of what you would need to perform a major overhaul. This overhaul package consists of an OEM Behr radiator and then you build the package from there. Add hoses, sensors, water pumps, thermostats, gaskets, hose clamps, and more. We also sell the Original BMW antifreeze to finish off the job.
Any problems with the cooling system are likely electrical. Sensors become corroded and fail over time which will send the incorrect signal to the corresponding unit, including the engine computer. Diagnosis of electrical type problems is easy and repair with the OEM Bosch or OE BMW sensors is not too expensive for a car like this. Electrical connections, particularly solder joints, can also become brittle and fail. These are not helped by the intense vibrations of the S14.
Turner's Tips For A Healthy S14:E30 M3s always seem to have cooling problems at the most inconvenient time. It the temp gauge starts rising in the summer months first check and make sure your auxiliary cooling fan is working… if it's not – it's most likely the switch or the wiring going to the switch. Also – remember that the E30 instrument conductor plate can make the gauge read whacky – try tapping the gauge if it seems like it's acting up. When it's time to do a water pump (which weeps through a hole on the bottom before it goes completely) take a good look at the radiator too – its not expensive and you have to remove it to install the pump anyway.

The E46 M3 does not suffer from the cooling nightmares of the previous E36 models. The original water pump uses a composite impeller, not plastic or metal, so the BMW pump will typically last 85,000+ miles before the bearings show signs of wear (the composite impeller is not the reason for preventative maintenance - it's the bearings). We prefer the OE BMW pump to the aftermarket brands because it uses the composite impeller, it has a proven reliability record, and the pricing represents a solid value upgrade. The pump is located on the front of the engine with the fan attached to it. The complexity of the S54 engine means the water pump has multiple gaskets and seals that should also be replaced. And if the thermostat has not been changed then this is the best time for a new one as well.
Composite vs Metal
BMW designed this water pump to use a composite impeller. It is much stronger than the plastic pieces that were so problematic in the mid-90s. The aftermarket solution to the plastic issues was to use a metal impeller. This solved the impeller issues but created some others. The metal impeller is heavier than composite or plastic and that led to quicker bearing failure on the E36 pump (sometimes within a year). The possibility exists that the same premature bearing failure can happen on the E46 M3 metal impeller pumps as well. The heavier weight also has the drawback of using more horsepower since it requires more effort to move the heavier piece. The composite materials solve all of these issues - light weight, strong, long lasting, and relatively inexpensive. They also come with a two-year warranty (most aftermarket pumps are one year). Original BMW water pumps for the E36 (and most other modern BMWs) now use a composite impeller so any issues with factory pumps are long gone. Original BMW water pumps for the E46 M3 are known to last over 100,000 miles and the composite is still in excellent condition (failure is usually typical leaks from worn bearings). For preventative maintenance we recommend a replacement around 85,000 miles.

Upgrade from the plastic impeller on the stock water pump to this aluminum impeller pump originally developed by BMW for the M3 GT4. This aluminum water pump was designed to stand up to the abuse of racing but can be used on a standard street car. Plastic impellers are earlier BMW's had a tendency to degrade over time and eventually break apart. While we have not seen this issue on the S65 engine as yet, why not get some piece of mind with this original BMW aluminum impeller water pump.

The early M50/M52 engines had a serious weak point: the water pump. BMW originally used a plastic impeller in the waterpump. This would degrade over time and eventually break apart. Your car overheats immediately. This water pump is an updated one with a metal impeller. BMW has since released a water pump with a composte impeller that does not have the same issues and is just as reliable as the metal impeller version. But for piece of mind, the metal impeller is tough to beat.

This Original BMW water pump is the latest updated design with a composite impeller. The composite material (similar to Kevlar) is much stronger than the problematic plastic impeller from past water pumps. And it's lighter than the aftermarket metal impellers so that means less strain on the bearing. For an OE/OEM replacement, we have found that this is the highest quality and longest lasting waterpump available.
This waterpump fits the following BMWs:
1999-2006 E46 3 series - 323i, 323Ci, 328i, 328Ci, 325i, 325Ci, 330i, 330Ci

The N54/N55's water pump is central to the car's cooling system as well as to the performance and fuel economy. BMW's engine efficiency design for these cars includes the water pump for balancing engine power output and efficiency and cooling responsibilities not only for the engine but also for the turbo(s) and transmission cooling. It's a very integral part of the engine. The N54/N55 engined cars already suffer from reduced cooling area because of the factory intercooler, tight space under the hood, and of course heat from the turbo(s). BMW addressed these challenges a number of ways, including a dynamic, 'smart' electric water pump with increased output compared to the N52. The cooling demands mean additional stress on the major cooling components, especially the water pump.
The N54/N55 water pump is electrically driven and varies output based on instructions from the engine computer. Under the best circumstances the pump drives only as much coolant as needed and will shut down or activate as load and performance demands change (combustion chamber temperatures are dynamically changed based on economy, normal, and performance demands). The pump can also run when the car is off to reduce heat soak in the engine and turbo(s). The water pump is now a factor in how much power and fuel economy your car is producing, making it all the more critical to replace during normal maintenance. If a fault or excessive temperature is reached, the dash cluster will display a yellow or red water temp icon depending on the severity of the condition. The car's electronics will begin shutting down various systems in the car to divert more resources to the cooling system. This can include reducing power output and activating 'limp mode'.
The best way to avoid problems and system failures? Preventative maintenance and overhaul of the cooling system, starting with the water pump (and thermostat).
This Original BMW water pump is the latest design version from BMW and replaces part number 11 51 7 563 659 (11517563659). It fits all cars with the N54 or N55 engine. Replacement of the aluminum mounting screws is required when changing the water pump (select from the options below). Proper bleeding procedures specific to the electric water pump should also be followed.

This packages covers the major components you would install along with a new water pump or thermostat. On the N54 cars (135i, 335i, 535i) the water pump and theremostat are mounted together. In fact, to get to the thermostat, BMW expects you to remove the water pump. This package covers the whole job. With the electric water pump now an integral part of the efficiency and performance of the engine, staying on top of its maintenance and replacement is the smart thing to do.
Our water pump/thermostat overhaul includes:

The water pump on the N54 engine has more cooling responsibilities than ever before. Not only must it provide cooling for the engine, but it's also pumping fluid used to cool the turbocharger oil and automatic transmission oil. The good news is that the pump only works when, and only as much, as it needs to. The engine computer dictates how much fluid needs to be pumped through the system depending on the load. That means the system can actually stop the pump when warmer temperatures are needed. No longer is the pump spinning all the time from an engine-driven belt. The bad news is that it's now an electrical part, so a failure is usually immediate and with no warning. And if the electronics are at fault, there is no way to rebuild or repair it. Fortunately, the engine computer will force a shut down or reduce power if a problem occurs, preventing catastrophic engine damage.
How to avoid a water pump failure in the future? Replacing the water pump as part of a regular interval schedule will ensure you always have a functioning pump in place. Since this technology is relatively new for BMW, therefore the lifecycle of the pump isn't yet known, we have been recommending replacement every 80-100k miles. This package of OE/OEM parts covers everything with Original BMW coolant offered to finish off the job. A proper bleeding procedure must be followed with the new electric pump.
This water pump package fits the following BMWs with the N54 engine:

This is the stock water pump pulley that mounts between the engine fan and the water pump. We have seen these plastic or composite pulleys crack around the mounting bolt holes. If left un-noticed the whole pulley can fall apart which will immediately disable the car and possibly leave you stranded. It can also break while performing other work around it such as removing the fan, replacing the water pump, or even just replacing the belt. Replacing this pulley while doing the water pump can be a good preventative measure.
This pulley is available in two different styles - the stock plastic or a stronger aluminum version. The same drawbacks with the stock pulley also apply to this plastic version. But if you're replacing the water pump on a regular basis then you should also replace the plastic pulley. The aluminum pulley will obviously last much longer. Both are the same size as the stock original pulley.
