    BMW Oil Coolers & Oil Cooler Parts

    The condition and state of your oil can make or break your day at the track. Oil is working best during a certain temperature range and when exceeded the protective properties of oil will break down. This is especially critical with older, dirty oil. Newer cars with high underhood temperatures are even more at risk. Aside from frequent oil changes and more capacity the best way to keep healthy oil flowing through your engine vitals is with an oil cooler. We offer track-developed oil cooler kits and other accessories aimed at reducing oil temps or making your current setup work safely and more efficiently. An oil cooler will not make your car faster or handle better. It's simply excellent preventative action to avoid costly troubles in the future.

    Our Stage 1 oil cooler kit uses mostly factory BMW parts to achieve a clean appearance and hassle-free installation, and works on ALL US spec 6 cylinder E36 BMW, including M3, 325i, 325is, 328i, 328is, and 323is (sedan, coupe and convertible). Everything we send you bolts or clips into place with no modification necessary and all hardware is included, making this an ideal kit for a street/track car. We use the system from the Euro E36 M3 so all parts are guaranteed to fit and look as it would had the car left the factory with it installed.

    Parts included are: Original BMW oil cooler (from Euro E36 M3), BMW oil cooler lines (rubber lines with metal fittings), a BMW oil filter housing (properly modified to accept the US banjo-style fitting of the VANOS oil line), and brackets to mount the cooler to the bottom of the stock radiator.

    This oil cooler system incorporates the Euro M3 oil filter housing. This Euro filter housing has ports for the delivery and return lines of the oil cooler. The internal pathways of the filter housing are designed for the oil to flow out of the housing, into the cooler, and then back to the housing to pass through the filter. Also the Euro housing has an integrated thermostat to bypass the cooler at lower temps (who needs cold oil when the engine is cold?). The US housing is not setup for any of this as the oil just runs straight into the filter and onto the engine. Using this housing also allows the use of the factory euro oil cooler lines, and is a direct fit with a minor modification that we make in-house. Other kits that are on the market don’t have this modification or have a ‘quick fix’ solution which can open up the possibility of leaks or oil starvation. We don’t take shortcuts so our products are engineered to work as a complete system – no leaks, no fitment problems, and superior performance.

    This kit will not work on cars with a super charger or racing alternator pulley due to clearance issues with the oil lines. This kit WILL work fine with our TMS pulley kits. For cars with forced induction, turbo, supercharger, or racing alternator pulleys, we recommend our Stage II or Stage III kits, which provide more flexible/universal routing of oil cooler lines, as well as larger oil cooler (Stage III).

    The TMS Stage 2 Oil Cooler Kit takes the benefits of the factory oil cooler and housing in Stage 1 and adds the TMS-exclusive HTP oil lines. This makes it possible to use the factory oil cooler with a supercharger or a racing alternator pulley. This is possible because the oil lines are routed away from the front of the alternator and alternator pulley. The TMS Stage 2 Oil Cooler Kit uses mostly factory BMW parts to maintain the same clean appearance and performance you would expect if it was installed by the factory. The HTP lines (High Temperature Polymer Braided) oil lines are better than a rubber or stainless steel line. They are non-abrasive, unlike stainless lines, so they won’t cut into power steering or coolant hoses. Our Kit works on all US-spec 6-cylinder E36 BMWs with the S52 engine. All components included with the TMS Stage 2 Oil Cooler Kit bolt or clip into place with only a slight modification to the alternator cooling tube (only required on particular models). By providing essential hardware with this kit the final result is a hassle-free installation for you, making this an ideal kit for a street/track car.     This is the same oil cooler that came on the European model M3. With the proper parts, this oil cooler can be fitted to your US spec M3, 325i, 325is, 328i, 328is, or 323is VERY easily. Please note, this item is the oil cooler itself and does not include brackets, lines, or the modified oil filter housing required to install this part on a US spec E36.

    To retrofit this oil cooler on a US spec E36 6 cylinder, you will also need our TMS Euro Oil Cooler Bracket kit, the Euro oil cooler hoses / lines, o-rings, and the modified oil filter housing (which has been modified to accept the fittings of the US VANOS oil line).     This is a stock Euro E36 M3 oil filter housing, as used on all European spec M3s (with 282hp 3.0 liter or 321hp 3.2 liter). The Euro housing has ports on it for running the Euro oil cooler. It also has an internal oil thermostat that will divert oil back through the block to warm it faster when the engine is cold. This housing is commonly used in the US with the Euro oil cooler when properly modified. The port for the VANOS needs to be drilled and tapped to match the US VANOS line and banjo bolt (M14x1.5). We can modify the housing for you (select this option from the list) or you can have it done locally (DIY modification is not recommended). The Euro housing uses the same filter as the other US models.

    What does TMS do to the E36 M3 Euro Oil Filter housing?
    The Euro E36 M3 cars use a different VANOS system and the VANOS oil line is a different size. The banjo bolt on the US car is M14x1.5 thread and the housing is drilled and tapped using a jig on a machine – not by hand – so the outside surface of the flange is smooth and flat to prevent leaks. This allows this filter housing to be used on US spec M3's, as well as any non-M E36 6 cylinder BMW.

Unlike factory lines, the TMS E36 Stage 2 Oil Cooler Line Upgrade can work with vehicles equipped with superchargers or racing alternator pulleys.     If you're racing your E46 325i or 330i with a stand-alone engine management this is the perfect additon for an oil cooler setup. This is a factory BMW Motorsport part from their DTC/WTCC Touring Car program and used on our own 325i and 330i racecars. This housing comes with pre-installed -10AN fittings for an oil cooler. It uses the same filter as the street car housing.

    This housing is for racing use only as the stock oil temp sensor port has been deleted. Because the temp sensor is used by the stock ECU for VANOS control this will not work on any car that still uses the stock engine management computer.

    The stock oil cooler on the E46 M3 is simply not up to the task, with oil temps quickly rising on track days. We have solved that problem by assembling this kit with a much larger FLUIDYNE oil cooler, Turner Motorsport Oil Cooler Lines, and the Turner Motorsport Oil Line Fitting Kit. The FLUIDYNE oil cooler has more surface area and holds more oil than the original. This not only ensures the oil is cooled better but also that hot oil is circulated through the system less often. With this kit on our SCCA T2 M3 we never had oil temp issues, even after two seasons of National and Runoff races. The cooler fits in the factory location for a safe and clean appearance, however, brackets must be fabricated by your installer. The lines are custom made to our spec with extra strength braided steel with a Teflon outer coating and -10 AN fittings. The lines attach to the stock oil filter housing with our Fitting Kit and o-rings are included. The length of the lines also makes them compatible with most supercharger kits (we use this same kit with no alterations on Active Autowerke supercharger installations).

    This is the sealing o-ring used for many oil cooler kits on various BMW models. They're also a prime source for oil leaks because the o-ring gets 'flat' or shrinks or becomes damaged. These are usually easy to change though which puts an end to annoying small oil leaks.

    This is the replacement for the troublesome oil filter profile gasket on the M50, S50US, M52, S52, M52TU, M54, and S54 engines. The housing is separate from the engine block and in between there is this small profile gasket. The gasket shrinks over time which allows oil to seep out. In our own service shop, it's one of the most common service jobs we perform.

    One of the other common leak points is the VANOS oil line and its seals. Since the line comes out with the oil filter housing anyway you might as well replace the line itself or at least the seals.

    On S54 engines (E46 M3, MZ3, Z4 M) there is a flanged head bolt going into the cylinder head, behind the thermostat cover. This holds the left side timing chain guide rail in place and if it's loose or falls out you could have a very serious engine failure to deal with. Make sure to check this bolt while you're replacing the oil filter housing seal. You only need to make sure it's tight. But if it's come loose you may want to replace the seal ring and use a small touch of oil-resistant thread sealer.

Standard oil coolers utilize “hard lines” which can cause fitment issues for cars with superchargers, Accusumps, or other aftermarket performance parts.     Made in the USAThe Turner Motorsport Oil Temperature Sensor Flange was designed to get your oil temperature from the best possible location: the sump. Most of the factory and aftermarket sensors are located after the oil pump, which does not give you an accurate temp reading of the oil that is actually lubricating the engine. At the factory temp sensor location the sensor picks up heat not only from the oil stream, but also from the oil pump and housing which will skew the reading. Other aftermarket adapters can be give inaccurate readings from their location and/or design limitations. And may require making unnecessary modifications. By relocating the sensor to the oil sump it reduces clutter and sits flush against the bottom of the oil pan to avoid potential clearance issues. Testing that we have done on and off the track shows that the sump location is the most accurate. We accomplish this by removing the factory oil level sensor or block off plate and using the existing hole and bolt pattern on the oil pan with no additional modifications. Any sensor with an M12 x 1.50mm thread can be used in the flange.

    Note that removing the factory oil level sensor will trigger the low oil fault/warning light. There's no elegant way around this but since the Temp Flange is considered a race-only part we assume you will be checking your own oil level anyway or be using a stand-alone dash/engine management system that does not track oil level. And having the most accurate oil temp is more important.
