BMW Control Arm Replacements & Upgrades

This package covers the front control arms and bushings on the 2001-2005 E46 325Xi and 330Xi. These cars use a unique front suspension but the principle design – and downside – is the same as almost all of the BMW 3-series since 1984. The inner and outer ball joints see a lot of wear as they are constantly in motion. With the heavy front end of the 4WD Xi, these components need frequent inspection and replacement. When the bushings and ball joints fail, the front end can shimmy and feel loose through the steering wheel. Excess play in the rubber bushings can cause alignment problems and sloppy steering. There is usually a knocking or clunking sound to further annoy you. We've assembled this package to replace everything on both front control arms and restore your BMW's exceptional driving dynamics. As an option, we can pre-install the control arm bushings into new brackets for you. This normally requires much haggling and frustration without the proper hydraulic press. But in our Service shop, we can assemble everything for you so your parts will be ready to bolt on as soon as they arrive on your doorstep! (sorry, no returns accepted on pre-assembly labor fee, please)

One common weak point in the E36 3-series model range is in the mounting and ball joints of the suspension. The front suspension ball joints in particular are prone to wearing out quite quickly thanks to a soft material in the ball joint itself, leaving you in a potentially dangerous situation. At best, worn ball joints and bushings will give you poor steering feedback and clunking noises. However, loose or worn ball joints will have excessive play which will drastically reduce the effectiveness of the steering and suspension. In extreme cases, the ball joint has been known to pop free of the control arm, resulting in total steering loss.

Meyle has addressed this problem with a higher-grade metal in their HD ball joints, similar to those used on the E36 M3. The metal will not wear or fatigue nearly as fast as the standard ball joints. The lifespan is greatly extended. A side benefit of the stiffer joint is better steering response. The metal will not flex or deflect like plastic, rubber, or any other material. The lack of play will mean sharper steering, restoring much of the car's precision and fun-to-drive character. We supply the Meyle HD control arms as a set with new M3 rubber control arm bushings. You can choose bushings with either a centered hole (same as stock original) or with an offset hole (adds caster and camber). The stock rubber bushings (manufactured by Boge) will be perfect for most people but if you're looking for an upgrade, the offset bushings will give the car quicker steering response. The solid rubber mounts last longer and give better feedback than the original web design.

The front control arm bushings is the Achilles heel on the E39 models. The original factory bushings are fluid filled and rely on the fluid to absorb vibration and resist deflection. When the fluid is gone the rubber left over cannot match the original bushing's strength. The left over rubber is not stiff enough to resist the movements from the suspension. The result is a lot of vibration and reduced feedback and response from the steering.

Meyle has addressed this issue with bushings that are not fluid-filled. The bushing is made of solid rubber that will last longer than the original bushing and is a bit stiffer than new originals for better response and feel. The lack of play from the solid rubber design will mean sharper steering, restoring much of the car's precision and 'connected' feel.

This is a package of Meyle HD control arms with the HD bushings already pressed in. This makes for an easy swap out-swap in install. These arms replace the existing stock upper control arms - otherwise known as a tension strut or strut support arm. It's the arm with the twist. This is the standard aluminum front lower control arm used on the 1991-1997 E31 840ci, 850i, 850ci, and 850CSi. This is a direct replacement from the OEM supplier Lemforder.

It's also an upgrade when used on the E24, E28, E32, and E34 models. The E31 control arm is aluminum and half the weight of the stock steel control arm. The E31 arm also features a sealed spherical bearing for the inner point instead of a rubber bushing. The spherical bearing allows greater freedom of motion as the control arm swings up and down. Instead of resistance from a rubber material, the bearing rotates effortlessly which allows the suspension to move much more efficiently, consistently, and without pre-load. You can feel the steering is more responsive and the suspension reacts faster.

This is the left/driver's side lower control arm - also known as a wishbone. It replaces the control arm with the ball joint pointing up.

These arms are identical dimensions as the regular arms so they are a direct replacement. But they have all metal ball joints instead of plastic or rubber. This means they last a lot longer and are much stronger. We used these in our Grand Am and World Challenge E46 racecars with excellent performance.

Control arms, and their integrated ball joints, are some of the most crucial components on a BMW suspension. The control arms literally control the wheel and suspension as they go through their range of motions. A faulty or worn control arm or ball joint is a very dangerous and potentially life-threatening problem so make sure they are inspected and replaced at regular intervals. For a street-driven car we advise yearly inspection and a full replacement every 3-4 years. For track-driven cars these should be inspected before every event and replaced every two years.

We also recommend replacing the bushings when changing the control arms. The bushings are mounted at the back of the control arm and located the arm to the frame rail on the car. The stock bushings are rubber and will wear out sooner than the control arms themselves. With the control arm off the car now is the perfect time to also replace the bushings.

Aluminum camber arms are designed as a lightweight component, thereby reducing wear and tear on other, more critical parts (rear subframe, control arm bushings, etc). Each camber arm weighs only 2.5 lbs making for a total of 5 lbs for both parts! Stock camber arms weigh 3 lbs each. We have seen competitor's arms that weigh twice as much!

Hardcoat anodized aluminum, stainless steel turnbuckles, and stainless rod ends to all but eliminate corrosion from getting into the threads and making adjustment difficult.

CNC-machined double shear design for ease of installation, high strength, and choice of outside bushing material. But we do suggest using with (outer bushing # 33326775551) for best performance.

Easy adjustment - our main adjustment point is on the outside by the wheel so there is no need to work around the exhaust or subframe to adjust camber.

E36/E46/Z4, including M models, rear lower control arm (camber arm, wishbone). This is a direct replacement for the stock arm and includes the inner bushing. These arms are designed to be slightly weak and flimsy as they will absorb impact energy. It's better for this arm to absorb an impact rather than the wheel or trailing arm, or subframe, etc. Also, unknowing tow truck drivers like to use this part to hook their chains on to. Consequently they bend as easily as a coat hanger.

This rear guide rod for the E39 chassis helps to control the toe alignment of the car (the horizontal in/out angle of the tire). There is a rubber bushing on the inside and a ball joint on the outside mounting point. When the bushings on the arm wear out they can contribute to a 'wandering' or 'loose' or unstable feeling in the rear. There may also be a clunking noise associated with bumps. This arm is just one part of the rear suspension, and other parts should be checked to confirm which one is causing the issues. Replacement stock toe control arm (track strut) for the E82 1-series and E9X 3-series. The track strut controls the toe alignment of the rear suspension (whether the tire points in or out on a horizontal axis) It also helps to locate the suspension to the subframe. As the rubber bushings wear, the tire can actually drift in and out of alignment, resulting in a loose or unstable handling feel (especially when accelerating in a corner). Replacement stock lower trailing arm for the E82 1-series and E9X 3-series. The trailing arm is also an impact arm, and is designed to bend if the wheel takes a major impact. It can also be bent by tow truck operators looking for something to hook onto. However it happens, if the trailing arm is bent it will throw off the alignment for the rear suspension. There are rubber bushings at either end that also wear but these can be replaced separately (new arm does not include new bushings). This is the stock replacement that fits either the Left or Ride side of the vehicle.

Designed and built in-house at BMW Motorsport, these are stock rear camber arms from the E36 M3 that have been strengthened by welding a reinforment in between the wishbones. Stiffer than the stock units and still adjustable for camber. This arm is legal in many racing classes where an aftermarket arm is not permitted. Sold individually, two required per car.
