BMW Chassis Reinforcement Kits & Parts

Made in the USAAs much of an "Ultimate Driving Machine" it is, many BMW models unfortunately suffer from weak points in the chassis. Over the years we have uncovered many weak or failure-prone areas in the chassis and have developed our own reinforcing solutions for them. And we continue to be the leading experts on BMW chassis reinforcing. Failures can come from a number, or combination, of causes: improper maintenance, age and mileage, poor design, environmental factors, poor repair work, and over-stressing modifications. The longer you let your car go without repairing or reinforcing these areas, the closer it gets to crumbling apart. Our chassis reinforcement kits are designed to first identify potential weak points and then strengthen and reinforce the existing design.

Most of our kits are not labor intensive although welding is usually required. If you suspect your chassis may have structural problems we recommend taking it to a well-known bodyshop or restoration shop. (find out who your local BMW dealer uses - we sell many of our kits to dealer-authorized repair shops). Making the preventative fix simple and effective is better than a long and complicated repair after the failure. Our kits are not usually used for fixing existing damage (only your body shop can determine the correct course of action). But our kits have been proven under extreme conditions on racetracks around the world to prevent many of the costly - and dangerous - chassis problems.
For accurate results, specify your year and model below.
Made in the USAThere are a lot of enthusiasts still committed to the E30 3-series. For these owners, giving up their 318, 325, or M3 is out of the question. We've tried to make it harder for them to part with their cars by developing reinforcements for common weak areas of the E30 chassis. With these pieces, you can prevent a costly repair or total failure that could cost you lots of money. These are a must-have for any E30 restoration (yes, restoration is the right word these days) or even during normal suspension work. Included in this package are reinforcements for:

  • front subframe
  • rear sway bar / swaybar tabs (from trunk floor)
  • rear lower sway bar tab (on trailing arm)
  • optional front sway bar tab (M3 only)

    Part #: T30REINF
    Price: $184.85 (USD)
Made in the USAAs E30s get older they develop cracks and bends in places that see a lot of stress. One of the most stressful areas is the front subframe, especially because of worn motor mounts. A sure sign that your subframe is not holding up is that paint will chip and peel from the stressed area. It's a good idea to reinforce your front subframe the next time you're doing any suspension work and a must when replacing motor mounts.

This kit installs on the underside of the motor mount gusset and reinforces the upper sheetmetal of the gusset as well as closing off and reinforcing the lower section. Requires welding. Kit includes 2 motor mount reinforcements, 2 subframe "ear" reinforcements, and instructions.

Made in the USAEvery E30 M3 that comes into our shop gets the front swaybar tab inspected. This is such a common problem but with an easy fix. If left to worsen you may be looking at an entire strut housing replacement. Fix it now with these reinforcing plates and a little welding! Not only will modified suspensions put stress on the mounts but age will reduce their strength as well. Reinforcing the swaybar mount to the strut will keep your swaybar geometry in spec and prevent a costly and ugly repair.

Made in the USA A suspension mount is designed to take the stress and force of a suspension. A modified suspension, however, puts more stress on that mount. Time is not kind to mounts either, especially when they're metal and have been exposed to the elements. In the E30 rear sway bar, the bushing mounts to a tab coming off the rear trunk floor. Unfortuntately, the tab is insufficiently reinforced from the factory. As the tab flexes it will stress and tear the mounting tab off the chassis. A car that is babied and not driven hard may not suffer from this failure. But most E30s are in enthusiast hands now and are driven aggressively. If you don't reinforce the rear swaybar bushing mount IT WILL fail - no doubt about it.

This kit includes two factory U-shaped brackets with extra gusset reinforcement, installation hardware, and instructions. Each reinforced bracket bolts to your car's trunk (drilling required). Any sway bar bushing designed to be used with the stock bushing brackets will work with our kit, making this compatible with many sway bar upgrade packages!

Made in the USAThis product reinforces the metal swaybar link mounting point on the rear trailing arm. The sheet metal breaks off the trailing arm due to the constant up and down loads being placed on the trailing arm from the swaybar. Problems increase when larger sway bars are used. This product eliminates the problem by thickening the sheet metal and triangulating the mounting point. A good time to install this kit would be when you are doing any rear suspension work, exhaust, or even if you are just doing a differential fluid change. This part requires welding for installation.

Made in the USA The motor mount area on a subframe is one of those easily-forgotton areas that may be hiding a serious problem. The subframe on the E36 has a gusset ('ear') welded on for the motor mounts. These gussets take the stress of the motor mount as the engine torques (more upgrades = more torque = more stress). Worn motor mounts only transfer more stress to the subframe. Unfortunately, the gusset is not well-reinforced from the factory and cracks can develop along the welds and the gusset begins to collapse. A total failure of the guesset will shift your engine to the side and forward, taking out many other components along the way and leading to a very costly repair.

The next time you replace the motor mounts, oil pan gasket, checking your oil pump nut, or any other time you drop the front subframe, you should install these reinforcements. This kit comes with steel reinforcing plates that are welded to the underside of the guesset as well as plates to close off the bottom of the gusset for extra strength. These are the BMW factory chassis reinforcement plates that came on the E36 M3s (some very early 1994-production M3 models may not have had them). This reinforcement should be done on all non-M E36 models especially when used in track/autocross situations. The kit is a set of 4 plates that are added to reinforce the rear subframe chassis mounts. BMW discovered that over time, due to the bending of the rear of the chassis in conjunction with the movement allowed by the rubber bushings in the rear, the chassis mounting points for the subframe would flex, weaken, and if left unattended, rip out of the chassis. The stock mounts are basically a flat plate with an internally threaded tube that are welded to the chassis. The flex of the rear subframe causes the threaded tube and mounting bolt to act as a lever arm at the point where the flat plate is welded to the chassis, weakening the surrounding sheet metal. Due to the direction of force of the torque applied by the drivetrain on the subframe, the first mount to rip out is the passenger’s side front mount, followed by the drivers side rear mount. Having these plates welded to the underside of the chassis significantly stiffens the mounts and stops the weakening of them.

In order to weld these plates in, the rear suspension, rear subframe, exhaust, and driveshaft must be removed. It is also strongly recommended that the back seat, rear interior, trunk interior, and fuel tank are removed and all fuel lines are capped to reduce the fire hazard while welding.

Made in the USAE36 cars with swaybar upgrades will develop cracks where the swaybar bushing mounts to the subframe. The problem becomes worse for cars that are tracked or drifted. Because the swaybar tab is un-reinforced from the factory, you can end up with flexing and twisting which will eventually weaken the welds and snap the tab from the subframe. By welding in this reinforcement you can prevent the mount from twisting. This will go a long way towards preventing a bothersome repair down the road.

Made in the USAA very common weak point on the 3 series BMW is the sheetmetal of the rear shock tower. The sheetmetal here is relatively thin and very susceptible to stress and fatigue. A worn out shock will bottom-out more often and this energy is transferred through the bump stop and into the metal chassis. Stiffer shocks and shock mounts also put more stress on the sheetmetal. Factor in age, mileage, and environmental conditions and it's not a surprise that we see shock tower failures often. BMW addressed this issue with reinforcements of their own but our's are thicker for additional strength. This kit mounts on top of the shock tower and can either be bolted or welded in place. Because of the shape of the rear shock tower, these do not fit cabrio/convertible cars.

Made in the USAIf you haven't already upgraded to Adjustable Camber Arms, your stock rear lower wishbones are letting your down. The stock rear camber arm/wishbone is designed to be flexible and weak. In an impact, it's designed to bend or even break to absorb energy and prevent damage to other more vital components. This is great on a regular street car. But on a track car, or heavily modified street car, these arms can bend just from cornering forces and that can introduce radical camber changes that will throw off the balance and handling of the car. This reinforcement solves all of that by tying the two sections of the arm together. This creates a single solid arm with minimal flex in the arm itself. We can't take credit for this innovation - BMW recognized the problem and did this on their factory Group N racecars. If you haven't made the jump to adjustable arms, or your racing class still requires the stock camber arm, then this kit is a must! Installation requires welding.

The shock towers on the E36 and Z3 are notoriously weak. Under normal driving conditions with a stock, fresh suspension it is unlikely that you will ever have a problem. But with an upgraded street or race suspension with firm springs much of the energy from pounding the road is transmitted to the thin sheet metal in the strut tower. This pounding will cause the tower to deform or even crack. Look for 'mushrooming' or deformity around the holes for the three mounting studs at the top of the strut tower. The sheetmetal around the holes should really be flat and square. Poor shocks or stiff suspensions will actually cause this sheetmetal to pop up.

These factory BMW reinforcement plates will help disperse the energy and save you from costly repairs in the future. A strut brace also helps to prevent this but these plates are designed to reinforce the strut tower from the bottom. The install over your strut mount or camber plate and simply add thickness (strength) to the strut tower. They can be sandwiched in place and do not require welding. BMW part number 31312489795

The E46 is by no means a very old car. But more and more E46s are seeing track use or being converted to all-out track cars. And the odometers aren't rolling backwards. With age, mileage, and hard use the chassis will develop weak points that threaten the overall integrity of the car. When suspension points and subframes start to rip from the car, it puts the driver and anyone else at a serious safety risk. Not to mention the obvious effects on the performance of the car. TMS has developed reinforcements for the most-common weak points in the E46 chassis. With these kits in place you can be sure that your car spends less time on a body rack and more time on the race track. Included in this package are all of the reinforcements we developed for the E46:

  • front subframe
  • front strut towers (not applicable for M3)
  • rear shock towers
  • rear camber arms
  • rear sway bar / swaybar tabs (not applicable for M3)

Made in the USAThe E46 rear driveline and suspension are very similar to that of the E36. An unfortunate side effect of this is that the E46 also shares some of the same problems as the E36. One of these problems is the rear mounting points for the subframe, which can rip out from their spots in the sheet metal. This happens because the rear differential transmits the torsional load from the engine through the subframe, then into the chassis. This constant loading and unloading weakens the sheet metal and causes it to fatigue and separate from the chassis. BMW tried to fix this problem in the E46 by placing a cross member on the front two mounting points of the subframe. This cross member keeps the front mounting points from having problems by placing the bushing and the stud in double-sheer, thus reducing the twisting action on the sheet metal. The unfortunate side effect of this is that the load from the front of the subframe now gets transmitted to the left rear of the subframe. This is where we have seen many failures of the chassis on low mileage street cars and race cars. BMW has also tried to prevent the issue by injecting foam into the open space between the underside of the chassis and the top of the trunk. This seems to work but that does not address the issues of the spot welds failing on the sheetmetal. It can also make any additional work there harder and almost impossible to weld against. Our reinforcement kit has proven over and over again to be effective and the easiest to work with in the long run.

This product reinforces the chassis sheet metal at the subframe mounting points. We do this by thickening the metal and distributing the load over a larger area. This kit will save time when repairing the chassis, and is also strongly recommended as a preventative maintenance item.

Made in the USAThe BMW E46 3-Series chassis is one of the most rigid and well built BMW chassis to date. Even so, it still has some of the traditional BMW weak points. One of these is the rear sway bar / swaybar mounts. From chassis to chassis the problem has not been identical, but all the damage we have seen has been related to metal fatigue. The metal fatigue is due to the constant twisting and side loading of the sway bar. These forces on the sway bar will cause the mounting points to fail over time. The failure can happen faster with sway bar bind due to improper maintenance of the bushings. However, proper sway bar bushing maintenance does not totally eliminate the problem. In the case of the E46 the sheet metal for the bushing bracket does not have enough material to support the loads being transferred to the subframe. We have designed the reinforcement to strengthen and redirect the load to stronger sheet metal. Requires Welding. Does not fit M3.

These reinforcement plates will fit a stock mount for added strength but need to be trimmed to fit inside the strut tower. The are very strongly recommended for all M3s with coil over suspensions because aftermarket coil overs typically have a smaller surface area for their strut mounts.

Made in the USAHelp preserve the structural integrity of your BMW E82 1-series, or E90, E91, E92, or E93 3-series with these weld-in strut tower reinforcement plates. Deformation of the front upper strut tower has been common problem, especially in race-prepped cars, cars with lowered suspensions, any car that sees track use, or BMWs driven on rough roads. The strut tower deforms from suspension bottoming out, forces generated by the spring/shock assembly, and that forced concentrated in a relatively small area on the strut tower. The strut tower will exhibit deforming by cracking (especially around the stud holes), or "mushrooming" where the tower takes on a dome-shaped top instead of being flat. By thickening the sheetmetal material of the tower, you are making it stronger and more robust to prevent deformation. While the E82 and E9x cars are newer and better made than the previous E36 and E46 cars, any suspension modification or track use will make the new cars more susceptible to this problem.

These are mounted on the underside of the strut tower and need to be welded into place.

The ORIGINAL rear trailing arm bushing / RTAB shim kit -- and still the best! As Used on Project E36 M3
Made in the USA The Turner rear trailing-arm bushing limiter kit creates a stiffer rear suspension without sacrificing ride quality. Stock trailing arm bushings are known for failure, on both the E36 and E46 BMW chassis. This kit is a perfect upgrade from stock, as it reduces bushing deflection, dramatically increases bushing life, improves handling, and all without the harshness of "race-only" bushings, and while maintaining completely silent operation -- no squeaks and no vibration, whatsoever.

By combining these limiters with stock bushings, this is a great low cost and effective suspension performance enhancer. Each pair of blue aluminum "shims" essentially sandwich the stock rubber bushing to control their lateral movement. By limiting the amount of side-to-side play of the stock bushing, drivers will have increased driver feel thanks to the reduction of toe variation caused by the squirm of the stock rubber bushings. This also reduces duress on the bushing, giving your newly installed bushings a dramatically longer lifespan (a welcome benefit for both pure street or tracked cars). Some stock class racing series even allow this kind of modification, because the stock bushing is still being used.

Kit includes: 4-black anodized aluminum bushing limiters, eight 5mm allen bolts and a drilling template.
