Sensor for: Exhaust. One weak point on BMW engines for years has been the cam position reference sensor. On the S54 engine in the E46 M3, M Roadster, and Z4M, there is one sensor for each cam. The sensor tells the computer the position of the cam on cylinder #1. The computer relies on the sensor's information to set injection timing and VANOS control. When a sensor goes bad, the computer loses track of what position the cam is in. While the engine will continue to run (taking its measurements from the crank position sensor), the entire system is thrown off. The engine may stumble or run rough, but not misfire, and there will be a loss of performance. Each cam sensor also doubles as a sensor for the VANOS. So when the sensor goes bad, the VANOS will revert to a safe mode and will not advance.
While the engine will still run with a faulty cam position sensor, it's not running in its finest tune. The DME will have fault codes related to the cam sensor or for the VANOS. This is the Original BMW sensor with a new o-ring.
