    E36 ECU REMOVAL INSTRUCTIONS

Locate Engine computer: The easiest way to describe the location of the engine computer is to say that it resides directly forward of the cars glove box storage compartment, but can only be accessed for removal through the engine compartment side of the car. So with that in mind open the hood of your car and look at the firewall just behind the passenger side front shock

Remove the three 1" dia. black plastic buttons (upper arrows) that secure the foam rubber panel covering to expose the black plastic engine computer compartment panel. Don’t worry about removing the 2 (lower arrows) 10mm plastic nuts, as there is no need to remove the foam rubber panel, as it is flexible.

    ECU 1

Loosen the 4 Phillips head screws (4 black arrows) that secure the engine computer compartment panel.

    ECU 2

    Remove engine computer "2".

(computer labeled "1" is the automatic transmission
    computer).

    ECU 3

Loosen, but do not remove two large Phillips head screws on both sides of the ECU.  Slide computer out of engine computer compartment (red arrow).

Disconnect engine computer connector by lifting its metal latch mechanism (seen above at the base of the red arrow).
