BMW E88 Turbo Upgrades If more boost and reliability are your goals choose from one of our BMW turbo upgrades. Our turbo upgrades range from stock turbos rebuilt with stronger internals to all-new, ground-up turbo upgrades. BMW turbos such as the N54 are capable of really impressive power numbers on stock engine internals but the factory turbos lack the precise tolerances and reliability that an upgraded unit will deliver. In other words, the stock turbos can only do so much and if big power (>400whp) is your goal a turbo upgrade must be in your plans. Our partners are leading experts in turbo technology and upgrades. N54 CHRA Replacement - OEM direct replacment

New from Vargas Turbo is CHRA replacements.  This is a SET of TWO hand built N54 turbocharger CHRA's, built to your specs, with all brand new parts including, new cast bearing housing (depending on options chosen), new billet compressor wheel (depending on options chosen), upgraded TD04 thrust assembly (depending on options chosen), brand new factory internals, all put through 3 rigorous balancing procedures to ensure long life!

We have multiple options as outlined below pick which best suit your needs.

Option 1. Direct OEM replacements - These are a direct replacement for the factory turbocharger. New or Reman bearing housing will be used, reman turbine wheel, reman factory compressor wheel. All brand new internals using the factory TD03 thrust assembly. $399

Option 2. Direct OEM replacements with upgraded TD04 thrust assembly - These are a direct replacement for the factory turbocharger. New or reman bearing housing will be used, reman turbine wheel, reman factory compressor wheel. All brand new internals using the upgraded TD04 thrust assembly. $499

Option 3. Direct OEM replacements with Upgraded TD04 Thrust assembly, and Billet Compressor wheels - These are a direct replacement for the factory turbocharger. New cast bearing housing, reman turbine wheel, Billet 6x6 compressor wheel. All brand new internals using the upgraded TD04 thrust assembly. $599

Option 4. Stage 1 Turbocharger with upgraded TD04 Thrust assembly, and Billet Compressor wheels - These are stage 1 N54 turbocharger upgrades using a new cast bearing housing, new cast VTT N54 compressor housing machined for a 14T billet compressor wheel, reman turbine wheel, 14T Billet  compressor wheels, all brand new internals using the upgraded TD04 thrust assembly. $999

 

PLEASE NOTE: This is very important to be aware of. Replacement CHRA's DO NOT COME READY TO RUN. You must disassemble your old N54 turbochargers, and install the new CHRA's into your old housings. This can potentially be VERY difficult, damage to the new CHRA can occur very easily if care is not taken when performing the swap. 

ALSO OF NOTE: These CHRA replacements WILL NOT help with any wastegate rattle, or worn watsgates, which can cause low boost conditions, sticky wastegates, etc. These are replacing ONLY the center section.

WARRANTY INFORMATION: Each VTT N54 CHRA comes with a 1 year limited, unlimited milage warranty to be free from defects. This warranty DOES NOT include damage caused by improper CHRA removal or installation, bent fins due to improper installation, foreign object damage due to improper installation. Basically you are installing these new CHRA's at your own risk. They are extremely fragile, if they are dropped, damaged in any way, before or during install, any and all warranties are null, and void. This is the risk associated with wanting to the CHRA swap yourself. If you have ANY doubts you can perform this, either order complete replacement units, OR take them to a shop to be swapped out. Your oil and filter MUST be changed when installing new CHRA's NO EXCEPTIONS. Not changing your oil will void your warranty.

VTT GC Cast Turbochargers

The "Game Changer" twin-turbo setup for the E9X 335 N54. It's called the "Game Changer" because Vargas was the first to introduce 750whp-rated turbos that fit in the stock location. To get this kind of power (750whp equals roughly 900 crank hp) Vargas had to build new turbos from the ground up. Every part on these turbos were designed around Vargas' specific goals for power, flow, and reliability but with the requirement that they fit in the stock location. Turbo housings are cast in stainless steel and flow-optimized for the stock location with bigger billet aluminum compressor and turbine wheels. All of the other internals have been optimized for this design to achieve 750whp rating. Particular attention was given to spool time to reduce turbo lag. While more lag than a stock or GC-Lite kit, the Stage 2 lag has been minimized as much as possible. Silicone inlet and turbo manifold piping is included (see notes below).

Inlet and Chargepipes - the Game Changer turbos require the use of Vargas silicone inlet pipes and the manifold from the turbos to the intercooler (FMIC). The stock inlet ducts are made of plastic and very small diameter for making big power. Likewise, the hotside chargepipe is also undersized and a poor design for flow. Vargas upgrades these with larger silicone pieces that not only flow more air but are also a lot stronger for the kinds of boost this kit can produce. The stock inlets and hotside chargepipe will not work with the GC turbos. For the inlets, select the type of boost relief you are using - the stock diverter valve or an aftermarket blow-off valve.

Fitment to FMIC - an upgraded Front Mount Intercooler is required with this N54 turbo setup (the stock FMIC is not up to the task). Since there is no standardized connection for intercoolers, you will need to make note of which type you have an order the appropriate adapter from our options below.
Option A (+$25) - 2.5" and 90* turn up from the intercooler (CPE, AA, ER Sport, CXRacing)
Option B - 2.5" and angled up from the intercooler (AD Engineering, ETS, Helix, Cobb, ER Compeition)
Option C (+$25) - 3.0" and angled up from the intercooler (VRSF)
Option D (+$25) - 2.75" and angled up from the intercooler (Wagner EVO)
Option E (+$50) - 3.0" and straight out from the intercooler (AA Race)
Option F (+$25) - 2.5" and straight out from the intercooler (Forge)
Option G (+$15) - 3.0" and straight up from the interooler (AMS)

 

135/1M/535 Fitment Note - the rear turbo in the Vargas kit is designed for the 335. A different coolant line is required for fitment on 135/1M and 535. You can source the coolant line on your own (BMW #11537558902) or add one to your kit below.

Oil Recommendation - modern engine oil is formulated for emissions and to be environmentally friendly. The additives in current oil lowers the oil's ability to withstand high temperatures and stresses, lowering its shear strength and its lubricating properties. Vargas recommends oils with high ZDDP (zinc and phosphorus) content that will better protect and cool the turbo bearings. Examples of high-zinc oils are Red Line Race, Red Line Euro, Motul 300V Racing, Joe Gibbs Racing, Valvoline VR-1 oil, and most Diesel-spec oils that you can buy off-the-shelf. Some oils, especially the Race type, will need more frequent oil changes and may be harmful to catalytic converters.

WHP rating: 750. This rating is used to compare various stage of Vargas turbo kits. There is no advertised horsepower gain with this kit as it depends on your other mods and tuning. The rating is provided as a reference to use in your tuning planning. Custom N54 tuning is required to match these turbos to your existing mods and upgrades.

N55 Stage 1 Turbo Upgrade

Vargas Stage 1 N55 turbo upgrade is good up to 425whp with proper tuning and high grade fuel. Vargas N55 turbo is an all-new turbo specially made for Vargas. They build it with a billet compressor wheel of their own design and a stock turbine. It will accept all of the stock water and oil lines and the original diverter valve (upgraded DV is recommended). This kit is a direct bolt-on replacement for the original turbo and necessary if you want to start making big power from the N55.

The stock plastic diverter valve and chargepipe is the weakest point for boost leaks (the plastic cracks). Vargas Turbo recommends upgrading it to a stronger DV design. The aluminum DV designs will hold up to just about any boost level currently available.

Vargas Turbo Technologies has been in business since 1979, offering rebuilt and re-engineered turbo solutions. For the BMW market, they identified a need for both cost-effective turbo replacements and proven turbo upgrades. It's recommended that the rest of the system be upgraded to handle your tuning goals. The final Vargas rebuilt turbos are better than the factory rebuilds and at a lower cost!

Oil Recommendation - modern engine oil is formulated for emissions and to be environmentally friendly. The additives in current oil lowers the oil's ability to withstand high temperatures and stresses, lowering its shear strength and its lubricating properties. Vargas recommends oils with high ZDDP (zinc and phosphorus) content that will better protect and cool the turbo bearings. Examples of high-zinc oils are Red Line Race, Red Line Euro, Motul 300V Racing, Joe Gibbs Racing, Valvoline VR-1 oil, and most Diesel-spec oils that you can buy off-the-shelf. Some oils, especially the Race type, will need more frequent oil changes and may be harmful to catalytic converters.

WHP rating: 425. This rating is used to compare various stage of Vargas turbo kits. There is no advertised horsepower gain with this kit as it depends on your other mods and tuning. The rating is provided as a reference to use in your tuning planning. Custom tuning is recommended to match thIS turbo to your existing mods and upgrades.

N54 Turbocharger Installation Kit - Front And Rear

Ensure proper sealing when installing the turbos on your N54.

Kit includes:

  • 16 - ASA M7x39 studs
  • 16 - Flange nuts
  • All required gaskets and o-rings
  • Water pump install hardware
  • Replacement vacuum hose
  • T-bolt clamps

Helpful hints:

For complete installation instructions, refer to Haynes Service Manual (ES2500921).

Both downpipes must be removed to remove either front or rear turbo. Tie rod end may need to be separated from knuckle for clearance. Steering rack may also need to be rotated away from subframe for access. Valve cover heat shield will need to loosened and pushed upward to get clearance for turbo manifold removal.

If studs back out of cylinder head and nuts are seized to studs, replace studs. Thread studs in to head by hand to prevent cross threading. When installing the new studs in the cylinder head, use a high temperature loctite in the cylinder head side, and copper anti-seize on the nut side.

To make more room for access to the front turbo, remove the rubber line running in front of the subframe that attaches to the back of the map thermostat and remove the clip. Cut off the OEM clamp and replace it with a new hose clamp as well.

Complete removal of the water pump is not required. Detach the water pump from the side of the block and push it out of the way to make more room for access to the front turbo. If water pump is unbolted from the block, the aluminum bolts must be replaced.

Included is a T4 twin scroll manifold which is the heart of this turbo kit.  Beautifully constructed with meticulous care, this design was torture tested in extreme conditions before even being bolted on the the test vehicle.  Perched proudly atop the manifold is your choice of Precision ball bearing or journal bearing turbocharger. Precision turbos were selected because they are leaders in the industry for offering top performing products that are reliable so you can make phenomenal power and not have to service the turbo for years to come. You can choose from a 6266 up to a 6870 with maximum horsepower ratings from 800hp up to 1100hp.  Boost is fed into the intercooler and then out to the engine by single 2.5" aluminum charge pipes. The downpipe is made of 3" stainless tubing in two pieces which is V-Band and connects to your factory or any aftermarket exhaust that accepts factory gaskets. To control all of this, boost is regulated by a pair of Tial MVS wastegates which are mounted down low and out of the way of heat. These can be accessed easily without taking out any hot exhaust parts which can come in handy if you ever need to change wastegate springs while the car is on the dyno or after hard runs. This will come in handy if you ever need to change springs in your wastegates on the dyno or after hard runs.  

Currently, this kit currently holds the N54 single turbo HP record at 889hp.  It comes complete with all necessary hardware to install, listed below.

-PLEASE BE ADVISED-
* Although the upper limits of factory N54 fuel injectors have not been found, OE injectors will SAFELY support upwards of 550hp.  It is advised to use an aftermarket port injection system when going beyond that level such as a Fuel-It system or AD-Engineering port injection kit.
* A good intercooler is recommended when installing this kit if not already done so.
* Please contact us or add a note when ordering if you have an AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. There is a slight modification to the coolant pipe that is needed to work with AT.

VTT N54 GC Lite Turbochargers

The Game Changer Lite turbo upgrades bridges the gap between a Stage 1 and the full Stage Game Changer setup. Vargas has engineered the GC-Lite to have faster spooling than the full kit so there is less lag and you can get into the boost sooner. The GC line is a fresh, ground-up design for the N54. Vargas has built this with a pair of Mitsubishi TD04L turbos with high flow 9-blade turbines mated to billet 16T compressor wheels. Vargas has targeted near stock levels of spooling without sacrificing top end power. They do this by increasing the area inside the manifolds, turbine, and compressor housings. Between the full GC and GC-Lite kits, the Lite has less peak power but better drivability. These turbos are rated up to 650whp.

Inlet and Chargepipes - the Game Changer turbos require the use of Vargas silicone inlet pipes and the manifold from the turbos to the intercooler (FMIC). The stock inlet ducts are made of plastic and very small diameter for making big power. Likewise, the hotside chargepipe is also undersized and a poor design for flow. Vargas upgrades these with larger silicone pieces that not only flow more air but are also a lot stronger for the kinds of boost this kit can produce. The stock inlets and hotside chargepipe will not work with the GC turbos. For the inlets, select the type of boost relief you are using - the stock diverter valve or an aftermarket blow-off valve.

Fitment to FMIC - an upgraded Front Mount Intercooler is required with this N54 turbo setup (the stock FMIC is not up to the task). Since there is no standardized connection for intercoolers, you will need to make note of which type you have an order the appropriate adapter from our options below.
Option A (+$25) - 2.5" and 90* turn up from the intercooler (CPE, AA, ER Sport, CXRacing)
Option B - 2.5" and angled up from the intercooler (AD Engineering, ETS, Helix, Cobb, ER Compeition)
Option C (+$25) - 3.0" and angled up from the intercooler (VRSF)
Option D (+$25) - 2.75" and angled up from the intercooler (Wagner EVO)
Option E (+$50) - 3.0" and straight out from the intercooler (AA Race)
Option F (+$25) - 2.5" and straight out from the intercooler (Forge)
Option G (+$15) - 3.0" and straight up from the interooler (AMS)

 

Install Kit - an Install Kit is also offered that includes all of the additional parts and pieces that will need to be replaced during this install (gaskets, hardware, etc).

135/1M/535 Fitment Note - the rear turbo in the Vargas kit is designed for the 335. A different coolant line is required for fitment on 135/1M and 535. You can source the coolant line on your own (BMW #11537558902) or add one to your kit below.

Oil Recommendation - modern engine oil is formulated for emissions and to be environmentally friendly. The additives in current oil lowers the oil's ability to withstand high temperatures and stresses, lowering its shear strength and its lubricating properties. Vargas recommends oils with high ZDDP (zinc and phosphorus) content that will better protect and cool the turbo bearings. Examples of high-zinc oils are Red Line Race, Red Line Euro, Motul 300V Racing, Joe Gibbs Racing, Valvoline VR-1 oil, and most Diesel-spec oils that you can buy off-the-shelf. Some oils, especially the Race type, will need more frequent oil changes and may be harmful to catalytic converters.

Diverter Valves or BOV are not included in this kit. You can use stock DVs with this kit or switch to an aftermarket BOV setup.

WHP rating: 650. This rating is used to compare various stage of Vargas turbo kits. There is no advertised horsepower gain with this kit as it depends on your other mods and tuning. The rating is provided as a reference to use in your tuning planning. Custom N54 tuning is required to match these turbos with your existing mods and upgrades.
