BMW E90 Control Arm Replacements & Upgrades

Control arms, and their integrated ball joints, are some of the most crucial components on a BMW suspension. The control arms literally control the wheel and suspension as they go through their range of motions. They do more than just keep the alignment in a constant spec - they are a vital locating component for the suspension itself. A faulty or worn control arm or ball joint is a very dangerous and potentially life-threatening problem so make sure they are inspected and replaced at regular intervals.

Most control arms for BMWs consist of an inner and outer ball joint made of plastic, rubber, Delrin, or metal and covered in grease with a rubber boot to seal it from the outside. The ball joint rotates and spins as the control arm goes through its movements and that will wear the ball joint and make it loose. The grease inside the housing can also get used up, evaporate, or become contaminated from moisture and foreign particles. As the ball joint becomes worn it can result in excess movement within the housing. Your steering and handling will become less precise and there is usually a light clunking or clicking sound. In rare and extreme cases the ball joint can separate from the control arm completely, leading to a total loss of suspension and steering control. You should have the ball joint play checked annually and replace them every 3-4 years. Most track organizations will not allow a car if they are older than three years.

Control arms also take abuse from impacts and handling forces. Aluminum control arms will generally bend and prevent an accurate alignment. Steel control arms will crack and fracture and require close inspection annually and replacement every 3-4 years.

This right/passenger's front upper control arm - also know as a tension strut or thrust arm. This is the control arm with the outer ball joint pointing down. Replacement stock lower trailing arm for the E82 1-series and E9X 3-series. The trailing arm is also an impact arm, and is designed to bend if the wheel takes a major impact. It can also be bent by tow truck operators looking for something to hook onto. However it happens, if the trailing arm is bent it will throw off the alignment for the rear suspension. There are rubber bushings at either end that also wear but these can be replaced separately (new arm does not include new bushings). This is the stock replacement that fits either the Left or Ride side of the vehicle.

These M3 rear guide rod arms are an upgrade for the non-M cars. The stock non-M arms are made from sheetmetal spot welded together at the ends. The arm tends to flex and bend under even moderate cornering loads. Factor in gripper tires and more torque and this arm is inadequate for stability and consistent handling. The M3 arms are one piece of aluminum offering greater strength and with a sealed monoball inner bushing that allows the arm to rotate (instead of twisting).

Replacement stock toe control arm (track strut) for the E82 1-series and E9X 3-series. The track strut controls the toe alignment of the rear suspension (whether the tire points in or out on a horizontal axis) It also helps to locate the suspension to the subframe. As the rubber bushings wear, the tire can actually drift in and out of alignment, resulting in a loose or unstable handling feel (especially when accelerating in a corner). M3 upper and lower control arms are a known upgrade for non-M E82 and E9X chassis. But our Monoball Thurst Arms are even more of an upgrade over the stock M3 arms. This package bundles the Turner Monoball upper thrust arms with the stock M3 lower control arms. If there's one big fail point in the E82/E9X front suspension it's the thrust arms. The front inner thrust arm bushing is filled with dampening fluid that leaks over time. Once it's gone the bushing has the strength of a rubber band. Even though we sell two types of upgraded rubber bushings there was still room for improvement. For someone looking for superior performance and longevity these sealed monoball bushings are the best out there. 

The advantage of a monoball bearing is that it will not deflect under load. All of the rubber bushings, including the M3, move in all sorts of directions and that changes your alignment, especially when used with big brake kits or when driven hard. And when worn out, performance suffers. Our monoball sits in a CNC machined aluminum housing which has zero deflection. The monoball allows complete freedom of movement but only at the desired angles. What you get is superior steering precision, better handling from more consistent alignment, and almost infinite bushing life. And thanks to the inner liner and sealed rubber boots there's none of the extra noise or reduced service life of fully solid race bushings.

The lower M3 control arm bushings use a similar sealed monoball bushing instead of rubber. This package gives you monoball precision and performance with OE-quality components.

This right/passenger's front upper control arm - also know as a tension strut or thrust arm. This is the control arm with the outer ball joint pointing down. This is the OE BMW replacement (made by TRW) and fits E82 1M Coupe and E90/E92/E93 M3. This control arm includes the inner pressed in bushing and outer ball joint. If there's one big fail point in the E82/E9X front suspension it's the thrust arms. The front inner thrust arm bushing is filled with dampening fluid that leaks over time. Once it's gone the bushing has the strength of a rubber band. Even though we sell two non-fluid bushings (Meyle HD and stock M3) as upgrades there was still room for improvement. For someone looking for superior performance and longevity these sealed monoball bushings are the best out there.

These were originally developed for our IMSA E90 328i and E92 M3 racecars (GS class Champions in 2011). But for this application we chose a sealed monoball with an inner liner to isolate the added noise, vibration, and harshness that a full solid monoball bearing will have. Our monoball thrust arm bushings are more at home on the street than other kits that are advertised as race bushings. We did extensive street, autocross, and track testing to ensure this bushing design excelled in each setting.

The advantage of a monoball bearing is that it will not deflect under load. All of the rubber bushings, including the M3, move in all sorts of directions and that changes your alignment, especially when used with big brake kits or when driven hard. And when worn out, performance suffers. Our monoball sits in a CNC machined aluminum housing which has zero deflection. The monoball allows complete freedom of movement but only at the desired angles. What you get is superior steering precision, better handling from more consistent alignment, and almost infinite bushing life. And thanks to the inner liner and sealed rubber boots there's none of the extra noise or reduced service life of fully solid race bushings.

We offer these thrust arms with the monoball bushings pre-installed for your convenience. Since BMW recommends the control arms be replaced for every other bushing change, we prefer to sell these as a pre-assembled set. The bushings are available separately if you wish to source your own control arms.

    The upper control arm (also called the tension strut or thrust arm) is the most critical bushing in the front suspension. It's the bushing that takes the bulk of the force from the tire and the one that wears out the easist. The stock non-M rubber bushings are filled with a dampening fluid that absorbs vibration and harsh suspension movements. However, this fluid is prone to leaking leaving you with a significantly weaker bushing. A worn thrust arm bushing will have significant slop and play which will lead to poor and imprecise steering feel, loose handling, and clunking noises. We offer a range of bushing options so you can either restore the original handling and feel or upgrade to a bushing that better suits your needs and expectations. We have put together this selection of stock and upgraded thrust arms so you can make direct comparisons of all of the options out there.     Note that BMW recommends replacing the control arms after every other bushing change. The arms should not be used again if the bushings have been replaced once already. Our control arm upgrades are sold as complete packages - a pair of control arms (left and right) with new inner bushings already pressed in, new outer ball joints, and any necessary hardware.

    This option is the base set of replacement arms, ball joints, and bushings. These are direct replacement fluid-filled bushings that are no different than the parts that came on the car originally. If you want the same ride and handling characteristics as when the car was straight off the showroom, this is the best package for you to buy.     The Meyle HD arms and bushings are also a direct replacement for the original arms but feature stronger, more durable components. The Meyle HD outer ball joint is much larger and a higher-grade material than the factory spec. The larger ball joint will last longer and the dust boot is stronger as well to keep out moisture and gritty contaminants. The inner HD bushing is a solid rubber piece instead of the fluid-filled stock bushings. It's also stiffer and deflects less to give a more sporty and crisp handling, and sharper steering. All alignment specs remain as per factory.

    The M3 control arm upgrade is for people who want a very serious change in the ride/handling of the car. These are the factory OEM E9X M3 upper control arms so the ride will not be much different than a standard M3. But it is a very large jump compared to the stock E9X arms and bushings since they are not fluid-filled and harder rubber compound than the stock or Meyle HD bushings. These are a direct replacement to the original arms and do not require any modification to install and will not change the alignment settings. But for the best results, we recommend only using these with the M3 lower control arms (wishbones).

    One step beyond the M3 bushings in terms of performance are these monoball bearing bushings developed by Turner Motorsport. These were developed for our street project E90s with feedback from a similar setup on our E90 and E92 racecars.     This arm controls the toe alignment in the M3 rear suspension. When these bushings wear out the tire loses toe control and the tire has too much lateral in/out movement. This can make the handling feel very nervous and imprecise and like the rear end is steering itself.

    The rear lower control arms on E82/E9X models are the weakest link in the rear suspension. The arm is made from folded sheetmetal and it bends and deforms easily. Not only will it deform from potholes and curbs, tow truck drivers love to hook onto them without realizing how weak they are. We have seen other race teams complete the box section to make them stronger. A bent arm will throw off the geometry in the suspension, potentially affecting handling and tire wear. These aluminum arms are both lighter and stronger than the factory sheetmetal arms and is the best solution for chronic bending of the stock arm. These are a direct replacement to your stock arms with no changes needed to your alignment. New high-grade hardware is included.

    Note: the stock arm is designed from the factory to be intentionally weak. These arms will bend so that something else in the suspension does not break. Our race cars used the stock sheetmetal arm but we replaced them often. We found that it was better to finish a race with a bent arm than not finish due to a catastrophic failure. The ECS arms are still designed to be the weakest link but are far stronger than the factory arm and will not bend as easily.

    The front upper and lower control arms from the E9X M3 are a direct bolt-in replacement upgrade for the stock parts on the non-M E90/E91/E92/E93 3-series and E82/E88 1-series. With the M3 components the fluid-filled bushings of the standard suspension are replaced with solid rubber cores or a sealed monoball-joint, making the suspension stiffer, more responsive, and longer lasting.

    This package includes:

    • M3 front upper control arms (thrust arm, tension strut) (31102283575 and 31102283576)
      The upper control arms eliminate the fluid-filled stock bushing which is very prone to leaking the fluid and cease being effective. The solid rubber M3 bushing is also a bit stiffer for more precise steering and control.
    • M3 front upper inner bushings (31102283579)
    • M3 front lower control arms (wishbone) (31102283577 and 31102283578)
      The M3 lower control arm has a sealed inner bearing instead of the rubber-isolated stock bushing. The bearing allows the lower arm to rotate freely instead of binding up. It's also a bit longer and curved slightly to give more negative camber (adds .75 of negative camber).
    • M3 headlight adjusting rod (37142283867)
      Replaces the stock rod on cars with adaptive headlights.

    With the added negative camber the steering is sharper and understeer is reduced. And the stiffer bushings and bearings deflect less which also improves steering feel and response. Since all of these parts are from the M3 there is no question on quality or longevity; no doubt as to their effectiveness or reputation. There's almost no downside to this upgrade. These are intended for street cars but even lightly tracked cars will see significant benefits to the handling and response.
