BMW E93 Radiators & Cooling System Overhaul Kits We sell only OEM Behr, Original BMW, or approved aftermarket upgrade radiators for your BMW. It seems BMW took some shortcuts when it came to radiator design and used too many weak materials like plastic for critical connections. The core and sizing of the radiators are generally sufficient for the intended application but problems can occur at hose connections, upper or lower necks, and plastic end tanks. The radiators we sell are all OEM designs to keep the quality high. In some cases the OEM has made design improvements to prevent past issues. There are a number of non-OEM replacement radiators that use even cheaper materials and poor workmanship which only leads to more problems. On some models we offer OEM alternatives that perform as upgrades to the original designs and we also offer full race all-aluminum radiator upgrades that solve all of the issues with plastic radiators.

Radiator Drain Plug - E82,E89,E90,E92,E93 This is the radiator drain plug (petcock valve) for manual transmission E82 and E9X models. The plug actually has two drains built in - the traditional blue petcock valve which is part of the hex head. If you drain the coolant from your radiator through this plug you could be in for a nasty surprise. The hex plug has tabs that lock it into position in the factory BMW radiator. Once it's installed the tabs lock in place. But if you remove the hex completely, the tabs snap off and the plug will no longer seal correctly! Do not drain your coolant without having one of these on hand as a spare! It's cheap insurance against a definite leak later on.

Fits manual transmission only.

Note: the Behr OEM radiator that we sell does not use this same drain plug. It has it's own drain plug that does not use the tabs. You won't need the factory BMW drain plug ever again.

Coolant Expansion Tank - E9X E82 E84 E89 Z4 This Genuine BMW radiator expansion tank (coolant reservoir) is used on many BMW's with the N20, N51, N52 and N54 engines. Due to the higher operating temperatures of these engines plastic components are more susceptible to failure. If you are overhauling your coolant system, now is the time to consider preventative replacing this expansion tank.

E82 128i, E9X 328i Auto Cooling Overhaul Package This cooling overhaul will cover just about everything you could replace on the 328's cooling system. We start with the basic water pump and thermostat bundle. These are already vital to the health and durability of the N52 328i. But to properly maintain these cars for the long term, the rest of the cooling system must be refreshed and preventatively replaced. Here you can add a radiator, expansion tank, all of the 328 cooling hoses, and the BMW antifreeze. This package fits 328i/328xi with N52 engine and automatic transmission. Some of the components are different for the automatic models because of the auto transmission oil cooler.

The sophisticated electronics of the ECU and water pump means catastrophic overheating should be a thing of the past. But the downside is that the electronics can shut down without any warning or symptoms. And troubleshooting is equally frustrating since the water pump electronics are not readable or serviceable. There are several clues to a faulty thermostat or water pump - the fan runs at full speed all the time (even immediately on a cold start), pending (soft) fault code for low coolant flow, or the water pump can be heard running constantly. But when the pump fails it's an immediate shut down of the engine which can be a major inconvenience and lead to additional repairs that might have been avoided with preventative maintance. We recommend a full cooling system overhaul on the E90/E92 every 80-90,000 miles and to check for soft/pending codes at every 5,000 mile service .

The water pump on the N52 engine has more cooling responsibilities than ever before. The good news is that the pump only works when, and only as much, as it needs to. That means the system can actually stop the pump when it doesn't need to be running. The bad news is that it's now an electrical part, so a failure is usually immediate and with no warning. The preventative replacement is your only insurance from a very inconvenient and costly breakdown in the future. Plus you get the very latest BMW water pump design with any improvements they've made since your original pump was installed.
Cooling Hoses

With regular driving the hoses should last a very long time. Even the plastic connectors seem to be holding up well. But as a preventative measure new hoses are recommended. We have also seen issues with re-using hoses as the spring connectors get weak over time and may not have the strength to hold the hose in place. They seem to have a tough time holding tension especially when they have been removed and reinstalled. In the interests of a thorough overhaul we recommend replacing these 328 water hoses during this job (see diagram):

  • 11537545890, thermostat to cylinder head (includes new o-ring)

    There are other hoses too but they are not often replaced during a radiator swap (radiator vent hose and heater core hose) and they don't see much wear. We offer these as well if you want a complete set (see Additional Items at the bottom of the page).
Expansion Tank Options

The expansion tank on the 328 is not prone to failures (unlike previous 3-series cars) so a new one is not strictly required. There aren't many seams or stress points for it to crack and we haven't heard of too many issues. But we wanted to offer it as part of a complete overhaul in case you want to cover everything. Simiarly, the level sensor is not required unless you're getting erroneous 'low coolant' warnings from the dash/iDrive. We do strongly recommend replacing the cap because that is designed to be the weak point in the system. The cap is what regulates the pressure inside the system and it should be replaced every few years anyway.

OEM Behr Coolant Expansion Tank Cap - E36 E46 E34 E39 E32 E38 E65 X3 X5 Z4 This radiator expansion tank cap is used most BMW's from 1991-2006. It is a common failure item. When this item fails, it cannot hold pressure which results in your BMW overheating. If you are overhauling your coolant system, now is the time to consider preventative replacing this cap. It is also referred to as the coolant reservoir cap.

E82 135i, E9X 335i Auto Cooling Overhaul Package This cooling overhaul will cover just about everything you could replace on the 135/335's cooling system. We have also seen issues with re-using hoses as the spring connectors get weak over time and may not have the strength to hold the hose in place. They seem to have a tough time holding tension especially when they have been removed and reinstalled. In the interests of a thorough overhaul we recommend replacing these 335 water hoses during this job (see diagram):

There aren't many seams or stress points for it to crack and we haven't heard of too many issues. But we wanted to offer it as part of a complete overhaul in case you want to cover everything. Simiarly, the level sensor is not required unless you're getting erroneous 'low coolant' warnings from the dash/iDrive. We do strongly recommend replacing the cap because that is designed to be the weak point in the system. The cap is what regulates the pressure inside the system and it should be replaced every few years anyway.

Aluminum Coolant Bleeder Screw Replace the flimsy plastic bleeder screw used in the coolant expansion tank or in one of the cooling system hoses with this high quality, durable, aluminum bleeder screw. The stock plastic screw can deform over time due to heat or even regular use. We have even seen the head of the screw snap off, leaving the threaded body stuck in the expansion tank. This aluminum screw will help to prevent sudden failure of the bleeder screw, which can result in immediate overheating of the car.

Radiator Options

We offer two radiators for the N54 135i/335i (manual transmission): OEM Behr or racing PWR. The OEM radiator is the best option for daily and regular driving and provides enough capacity and performance for stock to mildly tuned 135/335s. It will perform just like your original radiator did for tens of thousands of miles (Behr is the original supplier to BMW). The only real downside is that it's a bit small for cars making more boost. For a radically tuned 135/335 or one that sees a lot of track use then a bulletproof aluminum radiator is your best option, and they don't come any better than PWR. The 135/335's ECU programming will reduce or shut down boost when coolant temps get too hot. So reducing heat soak of the fluid is one step in having a cooler-running engine and more consistent boost. The PWR aluminum radiator is thicker than the original which has more cooling surface area and more capacity (the coolant spends more time away from the super hot engine). Some minor trimming of the plastic fan shroud is required but otherwise it's a direct fit. PWR supplys Formula One, WRC, and NASCAR teams so their quality is second to none.

Genuine BMW Control Sleeve - 17117521781 - E82,E89,E90,E92,E93 This is the radiator drain plug (petcock valve) for manual transmission E82 and E9X models. The plug actually has two drains built in - the traditional blue petcock valve which is part of the black hex plug. If you drain the coolant from your radiator through this plug you could be in for a nasty surprise. The black hex plug has tabs that lock it into position in the factory BMW radiator. Once it's installed the tabs lock in place. But if you remove the black hex the tabs snap off and the plug will no longer seal correctly! Do not drain your coolant without having one of these on hand as a spare! It's cheap insurance on a definite leak later on.

Fits auto transmission only.

Note: the Behr OEM radiator that we sell does not use this same drain plug. It has it's own drain plug that does not use the tabs. You won't need the factory BMW drain plug ever again.

Coolant Temp Sensors

There are two coolant temp sensors on the 328 SULEV - in the lower radiator hose and in the cylinder head. Both feed coolant temps to the ECU to regulate the water pump and cooling fan. You should replace the one in the lower radiator hose because it's one of the main sources for coolant leaks, especially when the old sensor is re-used in a new hose. The sensor in the cylinder head is not as prone to leaks and it's easily accessible so you don't have to replace it right away. But we offer it with the package in case you want to have a complete cooling system overahul.

E82 128i N51 SULEV, E9X 328i N51 SULEV Auto Cooling Overhaul Package This cooling overhaul will cover just about everything you could replace on the 328 SULEV's cooling system. We start with the basic water pump and thermostat bundle. These are already vital to the health and durability of the N51 328i SULEV. But to properly maintain these cars for the long term, the rest of the cooling system must be refreshed and preventatively replaced. Here you can add a radiator, expansion tank, all of the 328 SULEV cooling hoses, and the BMW antifreeze. This package fits 128i/328i SULEV with N51 engine and automatic transmission. Some of the components are different for the automatic models because of the auto transmission oil cooler.

The sophisticated electronics of the ECU and water pump means catastrophic overheating should be a thing of the past. But the downside is that the electronics can shut down without any warning or symptoms. And troubleshooting is equally frustrating since the water pump electronics are not readable or serviceable. There are several clues to a faulty thermostat or water pump - the fan runs at full speed all the time (even immediately on a cold start), pending (soft) fault code for low coolant flow, or the water pump can be heard running constantly. But when the pump fails it's an immediate shut down of the engine which can be a major inconvenience and lead to additional repairs that might have been avoided with preventative maintance. We recommend a full cooling system overhaul on the E90/E92 every 80-90,000 miles and to check for soft/pending codes at every 5,000 mile service .

The water pump on the N51 engine has more cooling responsibilities than ever before. The good news is that the pump only works when, and only as much, as it needs to. That means the system can actually stop the pump when it doesn't need to be running. The bad news is that it's now an electrical part, so a failure is usually immediate and with no warning. The preventative replacement is your only insurance from a very inconvenient and costly breakdown in the future. Plus you get the very latest BMW water pump design with any improvements they've made since your original pump was installed.
Cooling Hoses

With regular driving the hoses should last a very long time. Even the plastic connectors seem to be holding up well. But as a preventative measure new hoses are recommended. We have also seen issues with re-using hoses as the spring connectors get weak over time and may not have the strength to hold the hose in place. They seem to have a tough time holding tension especially when they have been removed and reinstalled. In the interests of a thorough overhaul we recommend replacing these 328 SULEV water hoses during this job (see diagram):

    There are other hoses too but they are not often replaced during a radiator swap (radiator vent hose and heater core hose) and they don't see much wear. We offer these as well if you want a complete set (see Additional Items at the bottom of the page).
Expansion Tank Options

The expansion tank on the 328 SULEV is not prone to failures (unlike previous 3-series cars) so a new one is not strictly required. There aren't many seams or stress points for it to crack and we haven't heard of too many issues. But we wanted to offer it as part of a complete overhaul in case you want to cover everything. Simiarly, the level sensor is not required unless you're getting erroneous 'low coolant' warnings from the dash/iDrive. We do strongly recommend replacing the cap because that is designed to be the weak point in the system. The cap is what regulates the pressure inside the system and it should be replaced every few years anyway.
Coolant Temp Sensors

There are two coolant temp sensors on the 328 SULEV - in the lower radiator hose and in the cylinder head. Both feed coolant temps to the ECU to regulate the water pump and cooling fan. You should replace the one in the lower radiator hose because it's one of the main sources for coolant leaks, especially when the old sensor is re-used in a new hose. The sensor in the cylinder head is not as prone to leaks and it's easily accessible so you don't have to replace it right away. But we offer it with the package in case you want to have a complete cooling system overahul.

Coolant/Washer Level Sensor (installs in expansion tank) - Many BMW (see list) This is the sensor / sending unit that notifies the computer if your coolant level is low. When this fails, it can give a false indication of low coolant -- or worse, not inform you of a low coolant situation which could potential cause overheating. (Note: This sensor is also found in the windshield washer container, to alert the computer when you are low on washer fluid)

    E82 135i/1M, E9X 335i Cobb Front Mount Intercooler

    The Cobb Front Mount Intercooler (FMIC) uses an innovative stepped design to maximize the available space in the nose without major modifications for installation. With 60% more surface area than the stock intercooler, the Cobb FMIC delivers much lower intake air temps for more consistent and useable horsepower. And special software is already available direct from Cobb to work with their FMIC via the Cobb Accessport programmer.

    Heatsoak is one of the obstacles for making big power from turbobocharged engines. The stock intercooler design is commendable for single runs at the stock boost levels. But adding any more boost and the system is quickly overwhelmed. As the ECU corrects for heat soak you will be losing power, which makes your upgrades worthless. To help maintain boost levels even in the face of elevated turbocharger temperatures, a more efficient intercooler is required.

    The Cobb design incorporates a thicker cooler with a super-sized 5.75" thick core. Total core dimensions are 21"x7.5"x5.75". Then they added another cooler on top for additional surface area. This stepped design uses all of the limited nose area of the E82, E90, and E92 body styles. Cast aluminum end tanks are specially formed to optimize flow (another obstacle for efficiency). Only minor modifications are required for installation and new silicone hoses and clamps are included. Unlike other kits, this intercooler is a direct replacement for N54 and N55 cars.
