The valve cover on early N52 engines is held down with this set of lightweight aluminum bolts. They were aluminum as part of BMW's efforts to make the engine and car lighter. Unfortunately, the aluminum bolts are one-time use only as they stretch when torqued into place. In other words, you cannot re-use them. This makes them required any time the valve cover is removed such as for gasket repairs or sensor replacements. Other times people will see an oil leak and think the bolt is just loose - tightening the aluminum bolt then cause it to snap! It's little wonder that BMW replaced the aluminum fasteners with steel from 2007 onwards.
When doing any sort of repair or maintenance there is no replacement for genuine factory parts. Turner Motorsport carries the Genuine BMW brand with pride and has the parts you need to complete your next project with confidence.

This set of bolts has you covered for a valve cover job and are Genuine BMW parts with the correct spacers and washers. Sold as the complete set.

Made in the USA The TMS Water Temp Sensor Wiring Adaptor is needed when you are upgrading to OBD-I (1992-1995 components) on a 3.2 or 2.8 liter engine. These earlier engines use two separate water temp sensors in the head, one for the ECU and one for the instrument cluster. Most of the 3.2 and some of the 2.8 liter engines do not have two holes drilled in the head for the early water temp sensors. This is due to the fact that the 3.2 and 2.8 engines used a combined water temp sensor. So we designed a easy to use plug and play wiring harness. The benefits are: No cutting and splicing, no trying to fine plugs and pins. We also suggest using TMS "3.2 in a 3.0" Coolant Hose Adapter P/N: TEN9931007 to make your life easier.

Made in the USA The TMS Coolant Hose Adapter is needed when you are upgrading to OBD-I (1992-1995 components) on a 3.2 or 2.8 liter engine. These earlier engines use a fitting to secure the heater hose to the front engine cover. The 3.2 and 2.8 liter engines do not have this fitting. This is also needed if you are doing an E30 3.2 or 2.8 engine conversion using OBD-I electronics.

There is no way to affix a coolant hose to the 3.2L M3 Engine in stock form.

Apply two-part epoxy (Included) and insert the TMS Coolant Hose Adapter.

Tap into place with hammer to assure a watertight seal.

Once installed, this is how the fitting should look, ready to accept the coolant hose.

Clean off any excess epoxy. Once installed, the fitting appears to be a factory part.

Included with the kit: TMS Coolant Hose Adapter, two-part epoxy w/mixing cup, wooden mixing stick.

BMW uses a lot of plastic in their engine components to save weight and money. Unfortunately, plastic is damaged easily and the factory oil filter cap needs a special tool to remove. This aluminum cap is much more sturdy and features a standard 17mm hex post on the top. 17mm is also the size of your engine oil drain plug, reducing the number of tools that you need to complete an oil change. This cap is designed to use the original o-ring seal so no special parts are required. You only have to remove the original 'filter cage' from the original cap and transfer it to the new aluminum cap. The satin black anodize blends in with the rest of your engine bay making this a smart and subtle upgrade.

Made in the USA TMS SPEED World Challenge racing team incorporates the M50 throttle body to the E46 325 intake. The reasoning for this is simple. It allows us to use a mechanically operated M50 throttle body instead of the M54 drive by wire throttle body used on E46 motors. The advantage of this is that we can easily use aftermarket management systems (i.e. Motec). The plate mounts flush with 4 flat head M6 allen bolts, and 4 M6 hex head bolts directly between the intake and throttle body and is SCCA legal.

All vehicles will lose some degree of performance due to heat soak under the right operating conditions. Engine management systems constantly monitor operating conditions and modifying parameters based on sensor inputs. BMW integrated the intake air temp sensor in the MAF housing on models such as the E39 M5, and, being sandwiched behind a hot radiator and in some applications next to an even hotter valve cover, this is less than ideal for performance applications. Absorbing excess heat from its surroundings, the MAF canaEURtmt shed it fast enough, and the ECU reads an inaccurately high intake air temperature. Compensating for this false hot air measurement, the ECU pulls timing and runs a richer fuel mixture, resulting in a significant loss of torque.

What can you do? Locate an intake air temp sensor in a location where it can properly measure incoming air temps and where it's less prone to heat soak. Mounting the sensor further away from the heat source and isolating it from the MAF housing, it can both resist the effects of heat soak longer and respond to temperature changes more quickly. The result is youaEURtmll experience reduced torque loss and more consistent power output when youaEURtmre pushing your engine hard.

The Turner engineering team was initially skeptical of the claimed performance benefits of this modification. They first set out validate the functionality and performance benefit of a temp sensor relocation. Replicating stop-and-go traffic heat soak in a 2001 540i was a simple task in a controlled environment - their dynometer. First the car was heat soaked to simulate being stuck in traffic or moving at low speeds by running the car four times on the dyno with the dyno's cooling fans disabled. The fans were then turned on for three more runs to observe the recovery rate once air flow was reintroduced. The test: following this procedure once with a stock IAT, and once with their relocation kit in place.

The result? Turner recovered 11lb-ft torque at 2500rpm through use of their relocation kit, with even greater recovery to be found for M5 owners. Here are the heat soak-related torque losses Turner experienced:

Stock IAT location:
18rwtq at 2500rpm
10rwtq at 3000rpm
9rwtq at 3700rpm

Turner IAT Relocation:
7rwtq at 2500rpm
5rwtq at 3000rpm
5rwtq at 3700rpm

The Turner engineering team designed a complete plug and play kit (unlike all other options on the market) that makes for quick, easy, and reversible installation. Weather-sealed connectors keep out the elements, while sheathed wiring offers a clean appearance underhood. With a harness nearly 3 feet long - the Turner IAT relocation kit offers flexibility in positioning, but not too long that you're left with unsightly excess wiring. Turner recommends positioning the sensor in a location away from engine heat, but still within the intake ducting to achieve accurate intake temp readings - such as the far side of the base of the airbox. Vehicles with cold air intakes with cone-style filters can even position the sensor in the end of the filter. Simply drill a hole in your (cool) location of choice and plug in the harness. More information including installation instructions and some good examples of sensor mounting locations can be found in our DIY PDF.

We include everything you need to relocate your IAT, just select your desired sensor brand below - Genuine BMW or original equipment Beru.

Also the perfect plug-n-play option for anyone looking to upgrade their intake to utilize an Alpha-N tune!

Note for vehicles with M62 engine: applicable to 1999 and up

  • All-in-one valve cover overhaul
  • Preventative replacement saves time and trouble later on
  • Includes new oil separator and check valve systems
  • Replace valve cover gaskets before a leak becomes worse
  • Replace valve cover before it cracks

BMW equipped the twin-turbo N54 engine with a plastic, not metal, valve cover (like with its N51 and N52 cousins). As we have seen over time the plastic can crack which leads to oil leaks, excessive oil blow-by, vacuum leaks, poor running, and other issues. Unfortunately, it's not just the gasket that needs periodic replacement but the entire valve cover itself. This kit includes a new valve cover, gaskets, eccentric shaft seal, and hardware. The valve cover also incorporates the oil separator and check valves which are not a replaceable item on its own. So a complete valve cover replacement will tackle multiple problem areas at once.

Cracked Valve Cover. The plastic used for the N54 valve cover is thin and weak in certain spots. This makes it prone to hairline or larger cracks that will leak oil and cause vacuum leaks. You might also notice rough running especially at idle and fault codes for fuel trim. Often a technician will go looking for a failed ignition coil, spark plug, or failed vacuum hose on the engine. But without a fault code to assist in diagnosis this can often mean wasted time and money. A cracked valve cover is a new problem area that many techs don't think to check. And the problems are more prevalent on modifed engines running more boost.

Oil Separator/Crankcase Vent. BMW integrated the oil separator system into the valve cover on these later engines. An internal manifold creates a cyclone effect and centrifugal force separates vapor from the liquid oil. The liquid oil is supposed to drain through the valve cover and back to the oil pan while the remaining vapor is burned up during combustion. It's a very efficient and environmentally-friendly design with very few moving parts. Unfortuntely it's not perfect and eventually the internal passageways will become clogged. This problem is made worse in cars that have short drive cycles, sit for long periods of time, do not have frequent oil changes, do not see regular runs to redline, and cars in freezing climates. If the engine never reaches optimal operating temp the oil remains in liquid form or becomes sludge. This is bad news for the entire engine, leading to excessive oil blow-by, fouled spark plugs, rough running and misfires and even premature failure of catalytic converters and oxygen sensors. Since the oil separator system in the valve cover is not available on its own, and cleaning it is nearly impossible, the complete replacement of the valve cover is the only option. Other oil vent tubes and vacuum hoses are also recommended to get replaced at the same time.

Valve Cover Gaskets. As with any rubber part, failures occur when the rubber becomes dry and brittle. The pliable rubber no longer forms a seal between the cylinder head and valve cover where it will develop an oil leak. Valve cover gaskets that leak can allow oil to seep into the spark plug holes and contaminate ignition coil boots and plugs. That can lead to rough running and misfires. A new valve cover includes new gaskets.

All new hardware is included to avoid re-using and over-tightening the original bolts (they have a very low torque rating).

Replacement requires accessing the rear of the engine with a lot of the upper plastic shrouding removed. The metal fuel line must also be removed and disconnected from the fuel injectors. Professional installation is encouraged if you have never done this kind of work before. Serious DIY types should have a Bentley Service Manual to use which greatly explains the process. You may also want to combine this work with the oil filter housing gasket replacement.

There is no maintenance or replacement interval for the N54 valve cover. However, we have seen cracks and other failures in the 50,000-90,000 mile range. Our best advice is to plan on a major top end overhaul around the 70-80,000 mile mark. There's no mechanical downside to replacing it as prevention and it will make the engine run better and last longer.

This item fits the following BMWs (with twin turbo N54 engine):

The E90/E92 M3 throttle valve actuators are one of the few problem areas on the S65 V8. They fail for a number of reasons and when they do, the car will revert to limp mode with poor engine performance and fault codes. In some cases you will have fault codes for the throttle actuators before they fail completely which is why it's important to check for codes regularly (even if your SES light is not on). Because the internal electronics are often at fault, the entire TVA must be replaced. The replacement is straightforward and is not invasive to the engine (if you can
