Since 1993 Turner Motorsport has been at the forefront of performance tuning for BMWs. We show this best in our tuned Performance Packages, developed along stages for specific BMW models. Each staged Package is tuned in-house, bringing together expertise from our street tuning division, service shop, and race team. Nearly all of our Packages feature custom-tuned performance software from the best names in the business. The software is the best feature in our kits, maximizing power gains while doing nothing to affect engine reliability or driveability. In most cases, Stages are upgradeable - you can jump from one stage to another by purchasing the new parts and revised software (contact us directly about buying parts outside of the Stage). Or jump right into a higher stage by purchasing the complete kit. We'll work with you to select the appropriate parts and a matching software tune. Nearly all of our Packages have been tested and tuned on our in-house Dynapack Chassis Dyno. Our packages are designed for US-spec models only.

All vehicles will lose some degree of performance due to heat soak under the right operating conditions. Engine management systems constantly monitor operating conditions and modifying parameters based on sensor inputs. BMW integrated the intake air temp sensor in the MAF housing on models such as the E39 M5, and, being sandwiched behind a hot radiator and in some applications next to an even hotter valve cover, this is less than ideal for performance applications. Absorbing excess heat from its surroundings, the MAF canaEURtmt shed it fast enough, and the ECU reads an inaccurately high intake air temperature. Compensating for this false hot air measurement, the ECU pulls timing and runs a richer fuel mixture, resulting in a significant loss of torque.

What can you do? Locate an intake air temp sensor in a location where it can properly measure incoming air temps and where it's less prone to heat soak. Mounting the sensor further away from the heat source and isolating it from the MAF housing, it can both resist the effects of heat soak longer and respond to temperature changes more quickly. The result is youaEURtmll experience reduced torque loss and more consistent power output when youaEURtmre pushing your engine hard.

The Turner engineering team was initially skeptical of the claimed performance benefits of this modification. They first set out validate the functionality and performance benefit of a temp sensor relocation. Replicating stop-and-go traffic heat soak in a 2001 540i was a simple task in a controlled environment - their dynometer. First the car was heat soaked to simulate being stuck in traffic or moving at low speeds by running the car four times on the dyno with the dyno's cooling fans disabled. The fans were then turned on for three more runs to observe the recovery rate once air flow was reintroduced. The test: following this procedure once with a stock IAT, and once with their relocation kit in place.

The result? Turner recovered 11lb-ft torque at 2500rpm through use of their relocation kit, with even greater recovery to be found for M5 owners. Here are the heat soak-related torque losses Turner experienced:

The Turner engineering team designed a complete plug and play kit (unlike all other options on the market) that makes for quick, easy, and reversible installation. Weather-sealed connectors keep out the elements, while sheathed wiring offers a clean appearance underhood. With a harness nearly 3 feet long - the Turner IAT relocation kit offers flexibility in positioning, but not too long that you're left with unsightly excess wiring. Turner recommends positioning the sensor in a location away from engine heat, but still within the intake ducting to achieve accurate intake temp readings - such as the far side of the base of the airbox. Vehicles with cold air intakes with cone-style filters can even position the sensor in the end of the filter. Simply drill a hole in your (cool) location of choice and plug in the harness. Our Stage 3+ Package for the 1996-99 E36 M3 takes our Stage 2 Package and adds the Schrick performance camshafts, M50 manifold, and matching Stage 3+ Shark Injector software. Adding the M50 manifold produces huge power gains in the upper RPM. If you spend the majority of your time over 5000 RPM, you're going to love this kit. The parts in Stage 3 are our most-popular performance upgrades for the E36 M3: intake, cams, software, complemented by the M50 manifold. While Stages 1 and 2 focus mostly on making mid-range power, Stage 3+ shifts the focus entirely to the top end of the RPM. With the change in the manifold there is not much of a mid-range torque increase. The Conforti software keeps any torque loss to a minimum.

The aFe Euro intake is designed for a 3.5" HFM and includes a heat shield to block warm air from the engine compartment. The aFe intake uses an oiled cotton air filter for maximum air flow and excellent filtration. The kit is supplied complete with heat shield, intake tube, sealing materials, hardware, and install instructions.

Just like in Stage 2, we use the 3.5" HFM from the Porsche 911 (993), along with a custom wiring harness, to work with the Siemens DME and special Turner Motorsport/Conforti software. This HFM reads airflow far more accurately than less-expensive other HFMs on the market. That extra metering allows us to fine-tune the software to make the engine more responsive, smoother, and produce more power! From Stage 2 we learned that the stock 3.2 fuel injectors were nearly maxed out so we specified 24lb injectors for Stage 3.

Stage 3+ is designed for street cars that see a lot of runs to redline and the extra power over 5000 RPM is needed. Where the stock S52 manifold allows a drop in top-end power, the M50 manifold just keeps climbing on the dyno. To preserve engine life, the rev limit is set at 7000 RPM. We have matched the Schrick cams with the M50 manifold, larger HFM and Stage 3+ software to all work seamlessly and reliably. We prefer the Schrick camshafts because they have been bulletproof through all of our testing and development.

Related Upgrades. We are often asked what would complement our software and intake packages. Within any Stage, we recommend our Underdrive Power Pulley Kits and a cat-back exhaust. The Power Pulley Kit will under-drive the alternator, water pump, and power steering pump. Under-driving means each component is moving slower which requires less power. The saved horsepower is put back to the engine where it transfers to power at the wheels. Power gains are typically 10 horsepower at the wheels.

We also recommend upgrading the cat-back muffler for slightly more performance, lighter weight, and a more-aggressive sound. Our favorite E36 M3 mufflers are the Supersprint, Borla, or Corsa exhausts. The Supersprint is the quietest and most like stock while the Corsa is the most aggressive (Borla being in the middle). You can expect a gain of 5whp with any of these exhausts.

More power = more heat. It's easy to make more power one time but to continue making that power consistently requires careful planning and design. With the additional boost the air entering the engine is also warmer, making the intercooler more important than ever. In testing, the stock BMW intercooler was quickly overwhelmed and cannot keep the intake air cool enough. The engine computer recognizes that and dials back the boost. A more efficient intercooler will keep boost levels up, delivering consistently higher boost levels. The Stage 1+ package includes a Wagner Evo I plug and play intercooler upgrade. We get great feedback from our customers and technicians about the Wagner FMIC - it's a direct bolt in part using all of the factory piping and it offers 85% more surface area than the factory intercooler.

The addition of the larger intercooler makes Stage 1 more enjoyable and won't let you down at the track or dragstrip. * Note that peak power gains are quoted remain the same as Stage 1 but the cooler intake air means there is less of a chance the engine computer will cut power from heatsoak.

1995 E36 325i/is Stage 3 Performance Package

Our Stage 3 kit features a cold-air intake kit, cat-back exhaust, performance software, and is tuned for stock M3 cams (not included in Package, can be added below). This whole package has been precisely tuned to work together and make the most power with as little downside.

The aFe intake is made with heat-blocking materials, reducing underhood temperatures and not contributing to heat soak of the air filter. aFe uses an oiled cotton air filter for maximum air flow and excellent filtration. The kit is supplied complete with heat shield, intake tube, sealing materials, hardware, and install instructions.

We can supply this Package with either a Borla or Corsa exhaust system. Both are stainless steel cat-back sections with dual tips. The Borla is a little more mellower sound than the Corsa. The Corsa makes a deep, aggressive burble that is a bit on the loud side but not over-the-top. Both are very light weight with the Borla weighing only 28lbs.

The difference between Stage 2 and Stage 3 is that the software we supply is also tuned for the M3 camshaft upgrade. Adding the stock cams from the S50 and S52 M3 engine is a big wake-up call on the 325i motor. You can expect big power gains in the top end. The M3 cams are a perfect blend of power and driveability - you lose almost nothing in low-end torque.

Our TMS Performance Chips include specific tuning for each part of the Package. The chip is the safest and easiest way to get big power from your engine. Our chips require premium fuel (91 or higher) and allow us to alter the settings on the engine management. Because we can be more aggressive in our tuning, we can get a lot of horsepower for very little money.

Our Stage 1 kit featuring a cold-air intake kit and matching performance software. The aFe intake is a cone filter with a heat-blocking shield around it. The larger surface area of the filter, combined with the heat shield, allow more cool air to enter the engine - creating more power and torque, a richer engine sound, and better throttle response. The kit is supplied complete with heat shield, intake tube, sealing materials, hardware, and install instructions.

Our software fully maximizes the SULEV N51 engine in the 328i. Our software has been carefully developed on the dyno and the road to provide optimal power and torque gains at all RPM. We change the fuel, Valvetronic, and VANOS maps as well as revise the factory torque limiters. We have paid particular attention to increasing low and mid-range torque. The stock BMW software is hampered by settings for 87 octane fuel. By re-mapping the engine programming for 91 octane, we can make more power, torque, and improve fuel mileage - all without harm to the engine or affecting driveability. The throttle response is also improved (quicker) eliminating unwanted and dangerous flat spots in the pedal response.

There are two ways to install our software: mailing the ECU to us for a reflash or do-it-yourself install with our Turner Flash tool:

Mail-In Reflash - lower upfront cost but additional shipping charges. Minimum downtime of at least three days. We have a 24 hour turnaround on shipping the ECU back to you but factor in transit time. Expert installation of your software at our facility.
Turner Flash DIY tool - higher upfront cost but files are emailed back and forth. No downtime - you can still drive the car while we process your tune. Files are emailed back and forth - your stock file comes to us, a tuned file is returned to you. Easy install via Windows laptop.

This package covers BMW's N51 SULEV model - Super Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle specification. The N51 engine was installed in the 328i model in certain parts of the country to help with emissions certification (California, the Northwest, and the Northeast). Most customers did not have choice in which engine was installed. We will verify that you get the correct software by checking the VIN at the time of your order.

Our Stage 1 kit featuring a cold-air intake kit and matching performance software. The aFe intake is a cone filter with a heat-blocking shield around it. The larger surface area of the filter, combined with the heat shield, allow more cool air to enter the engine - creating more power and torque, a richer engine sound, and better throttle response. The kit is supplied complete with heat shield, intake tube, sealing materials, hardware, and install instructions.

Our flash software is tuned especially for a cold-air intake, maximizing the potential and providing smoother power delivery. We take the stock software and make adjustments for 91 octane (stock software is set around 87). We can get more power and torque, and increase fuel efficiency without affecting driveability or the life of the engine. The throttle response is also improved (quicker) eliminating unwanted and dangerous flat spots in the pedal response.

The 128i has BMW's 'MO - Medium Output' engine so it was de-tuned slightly from its true potential. What we have done is focus on improving the mid-range torque to get back some of that lost horsepower. Since this is where most drivers spend their time these gains would prove to be the most beneficial. Both of these items are packaged and work together. They provide a solid performance boost with a built-in package discount. For an excellent 'bang for the buck' upgrade, the software and intake are a great choice.

Our software fully maximizes the 'high-output' N52B30M0 engine in the 128i. Our software has been carefully developed on the dyno and the road to provide optimal power and torque gains at all RPM. We change the fuel, Valvetronic, and VANOS maps as well as revise the factory torque limiters. We have paid particular attention to increasing low and mid-range torque. The stock BMW software is hampered by settings for 87 octane fuel. By re-mapping the engine programming for 91 octane, we can make more power, torque, and improve fuel mileage - all without harm to the engine or affecting driveability. The throttle response is also improved (quicker) eliminating unwanted and dangerous flat spots in the pedal response.

There are two ways to install our software: mailing the ECU to us for a reflash or do-it-yourself install with our Turner Flash tool:

Mail-In Reflash - lower upfront cost but additional shipping charges. Minimum downtime of at least three days. We have a 24 hour turnaround on shipping the ECU back to you but factor in transit time. Expert installation of your software at our facility.
Turner Flash DIY tool - higher upfront cost but files are emailed back and forth. No downtime - you can still drive the car while we process your tune. Files are emailed back and forth - your stock file comes to us, a tuned file is returned to you. Easy install via Windows laptop.

TURNER POWER PULLEY

Get MORE HORSEPOWER and TORQUE on your 2008, 2009 and newer M3 coupe, sedan or convertible by replacing the stock crank pulley with this specially designed performance version. The Power Pulley reduces rotational mass and safely under drives your belt driven auxiliaries for reduced parasitic power loss. The end result: More power to your M3's rear wheels! Designed to give the best performance benefit with no sacrifices or compromises to your BMW's reliability. These have been tested on hundreds of cars before public release and there are simply NO DOWNSIDES to this upgrade.

CNC machined using aircraft grade 6061 aluminum billet, and anodized with a stealthy black coating. Others may advertise "their" crank pulley boasting higher numbers (using a smaller pulley profile), but we have concluded that for street and track driven M3s, this is the best size and design to ensure proper engine temp and auxiliary functionality. As the S65 M3 V8 engine doesn't use a traditional harmonic balancer, all factory harmonics and dampening are fully and properly retained. We've found this pulley alone adds 10 to 14 HP and 7 to 9 Ft/lbs Torque on a stock M3 with no other mods(!!).

TURNER STAGE 1 PERFORMANCE SOFTWARE
Adding power and torque to your M3's V8 is as easy as a flash! Where we can make our software better is by tuning it for higher octane gasoline. The stock software is tuned around the 87 octane available in the US (not that most people would use 87 but BMW engineers must account for that possibility). With our software, the performance of the S65 engine is optimized for the higher 91 or 93 octane. We tune many areas of the engine programming - fuel and timing maps at part throttle and wide-open throttle, revised torque settings and knock control, VAN0S variable valve timing, and more. The throttle response is also improved (quicker and smoother) eliminating unwanted and dangerous flat spots in the factory pedal response. We also offer raised rev limits and the top speed is raised/eliminated. Our software uses the factory 240E update as a base. The 240E has several major enhancements over previous factory file versions. No worry if you don't have 240E - we will provide you with a free update before the Turner performance software is installed. If you have other modifications done to your M3, we can supply you with specially-developed software to maximize the gains from those upgrades.

Turner Motorsport has been developing software on the S65 since our first car in 2008. Since then we have done software projects for street, track, full-race, stroker, and supercharged engine builds using the stock MSS60 DME or a stand-alone Bosch or Motec system. Engine tunes have been developed and checked on our Dynapack chassis dyno and further refined with real world testing. For track cars, our Stage 2 cat-delete software will clear check engine lights and faults (to satisfy race series regulations).

Our software is installed via the Turner flashing OBD tool. This tool plugs into the OBD socket in the dash and the performance software is installed from a laptop computer connected to the tool. It also works as a fault code scanner to read and reset diagnostic trouble codes and reset adaptations. The software program requires a Windows XP/Vista/7/8/10 laptop and the installation and setup are very easy (click here for instructions). The OBD tool, cable, and files are shipped to you with simple setup instructions. There is no need to remove your ECU and ship it. You can have your M3 flashed in under an hour from the convenience of your garage or driveway!


Stage 1 Performance Software Options:

Minimum Octane

You can choose between 91 or 93. We have developed tuning for the standard 'high octane' premium fuel found around the country (91 is the maximum available in some areas). Our power and torque gains are advertised with 91. If using 93 we can alter the knock sensor logic to extract more power with the higher grade fuel. Additional race fuel maps are also available, contact us for details.

Rev Limit

On 6-speed manual cars we can set a higher engine rev limit. 8,300 is stock; 8,400 is what was used on the GTS model in Europe; 8,600 is the safest raised rev limit that we have used in our race cars. To make things simple we offer it as either stock 8,300 or raised to 8,600. On DCT cars the higher rev limits are for M shift modes only (manual/paddle shift). The higher revs do not work in full auto D modes. Work is continuing on higher limits for D mode.

Launch Control

Our software can also enable a Launch Control feature. To use it, activate M Dynamic Mode, engage first gear, hold the throttle to the floor (it will only rev to 3,500 RPM), and dump the clutch. Keep your foot to the floor and hang on! You don't have to modulate the clutch and throttle - the engine and DSC modules will handle the launch. We experimented with different launch points and found that 3,500 RPM offers a great combination of tire hook-up and torque output. This is available on manual transmission cars only (DCT has their own built-in launch control).

M Dynamic Mode Steering

We can set the M Dynamic Mode (MDM) steering effort as the standard steering. The MDM steering is heavier and requires more effort when driving at higher speeds. Some owners feel that the standard steering is too light and over-boosted and the MDM steering is a nice change. This does not affect the steering effort, or the other features, of MDM.

240E Update

Our performance and race software is built around a specific version of stock BMW software (version 240E). It was released towards the end of M3 production and includes a number of significant changes over older versions for drivability and torque managment. 240E was such a big step forward that it's considered an upgrade all on its own. No worry if you don't have 240E - we will provide you with a free update before the Turner performance software is installed.

In 2015 BMW released a 241E update. There are minor changes to the software code but the tuning maps and data are all the same as the 240E version so there is no need to update to 241E. If the dealer offers it we recommend that you decline. If you're already on 240E there is no reason to switch to 241E (the tuning maps are the same).
