BMW Engine Performance Packages

BMW Engine Performance Packages Since 1993 Turner Motorsport has been at the forefront of performance tuning for BMWs. We show this best in our tuned Performance Packages, developed along stages for specific BMW models. Each staged Package is tuned in-house, bringing together expertise from our street tuning division, service shop, and race team. Nearly all of our Packages feature custom-tuned performance software from the best names in the business. The software is the best feature in our kits, maximizing power gains while doing nothing to affect engine reliability or driveability. In most cases, Stages are upgradeable - you can jump from one stage to another by purchasing the new parts and revised software (contact us directly about buying parts outside of the Stage). Or jump right into a higher stage by purchasing the complete kit. We'll work with you to select the appropriate parts and a matching software tune. Nearly all of our Packages have been tested and tuned on our in-house Dynapack Chassis Dyno. Our packages are designed for US-spec models only.

Our Stage 1 kit featuring a cold-air intake kit and performance software. The aFe coil air intake is made with heat-blocking materials, reducing underhood temperatures and not contributing to heat soak of the air filter. aFe uses an oiled cotton air filter for maximum air flow and excellent filtration. The kit is supplied complete with heat shield, intake tube, sealing materials, hardware, and install instructions.

The software is also Conforti-tuned and supplied with the Shark Injector software loader. The Shark Injector is a do-it-yourself reflash tool that plugs into the diagnostic plug in the engine bay. With the push of a button, it will copy your stock software and reflash your computer with the performance tune. You can set it back to stock at any time by following the same procedure.

Both of these items are packaged and work together. They provide a solid performance boost with a low upfront cost. For an excellent 'bang for the buck' upgrade, the software and intake are a great choice (TMS Underdrive Pulleys would also be on that list).

Related Upgrades: We are often asked what would complement our software and intake packages. Within any Stage, we recommend our Underdrive Power Pulley Kits. The Power Pulley Kit will under-drive the alternator, water pump, and power steering pump. Under-driving means each component is moving slower which requires less power. The saved horsepower is put back to the engine where it transfers to power at the wheels. Power gains are typically 10 horsepower at the wheels.

We also recommend upgrading the cat-back muffler for slightly more performance, lighter weight, and a more-aggressive sound. Our favorite E36 M3 mufflers are the Supersprint, Borla, or Corsa exhausts. The Supersprint is the quietest and most like stock while the Corsa is the most aggressive (Borla being in the middle). You can expect a gain of 5whp with any of these exhausts.

Our Stage 1 kit featuring a cold-air intake kit and matching performance software. The aFe intake is a cone filter with a heat-blocking shield around it. The larger surface area of the filter, combined with the heat shield, allow more cool air to enter the engine - creating more power and torque, a richer engine sound, and better throttle response. The kit is supplied complete with heat shield, intake tube, sealing materials, hardware, and install instructions.

Our flash software is tuned especially for a cold-air intake, maximizing the potential and providing smoother power delivery. We take the stock software and make adjustments for 91 octane (stock software is set around 87). We can get more power and torque, and increase fuel efficiency without affecting driveability or the life of the engine. The throttle response is also improved (quicker) eliminating unwanted and dangerous flat spots in the pedal response.

The 128i has BMW's 'MO - Medium Output' engine so it was de-tuned slightly from its true potential. What we have done is focus on improving the mid-range torque to get back some of that lost horsepower. Since this is where most drivers spend their time these gains would prove to be the most beneficial. Both of these items are packaged and work together. They provide a solid performance boost with a built-in package discount. For an excellent 'bang for the buck' upgrade, the software and intake are a great choice.

Our software fully maximizes the 'high-output' N52B30M0 engine in the 128i. Our software has been carefully developed on the dyno and the road to provide optimal power and torque gains at all RPM. We change the fuel, Valvetronic, and VANOS maps as well as revise the factory torque limiters. We have paid particular attention to increasing low and mid-range torque. The stock BMW software is hampered by settings for 87 octane fuel. By re-mapping the engine programming for 91 octane, we can make more power, torque, and improve fuel mileage - all without harm to the engine or affecting driveability. The throttle response is also improved (quicker) eliminating unwanted and dangerous flat spots in the pedal response.

There are two ways to install our software: mailing the ECU to us for a reflash or do-it-yourself install with our Turner Flash tool:

Mail-In Reflash - lower upfront cost but additional shipping charges. Minimum downtime of at least three days. We have a 24 hour turnaround on shipping the ECU back to you but factor in transit time. Expert installation of your software at our facility.
Turner Flash DIY tool - higher upfront cost but files are emailed back and forth. No downtime - you can still drive the car while we process your tune. Files are emailed back and forth - your stock file comes to us, a tuned file is returned to you. Easy install via Windows laptop.

Stage 5 is the peak level for the naturally aspirated S52 (with the S52 intake manifold). The Stage 5 is intended for track cars only because it does away with the factory catalytic converters and includes software engineered to ignore the post-cat O2 sensors. If you're racing and want to maximize your top end power while still maintaining bottom-end torque with the S52 manifold, this is your ultimate kit.

This is the Package that includes nearly everything: intake, HFM, injectors, cams, headers, track pipe, and software. The track pipe that we use replaces the factory catalytic converter section. It bolts onto the TMS Shorty headers and to any 'cat-back' muffler you are using (Borla, Corsa, etc). We see a big power improvement with this Track Pipe, especially in the 5000-6900 RPM range.

The Track Pipe exhaust section removes the catalytic converters so the car will not meet federal emissions standards. This Package and the track-only parts are only sold with an emissions waiver that can be downloaded here. The power gains with this Package are huge but it is intended only for off-road and track/race cars.

Our Stage 1 kit featuring a cold-air intake kit and performance software. The aFE intake is made from high-quality materials, reducing underhood temperatures and not contributing to heat soak of the air filter. aFe's Stage 2 Intake uses an oiled cotton air filter for maximum air flow and excellent filtration. Our software fully maximizes the 'high-output' N52B30K0 engine in the 325i. Our software has been carefully developed on the dyno and the road to provide optimal power and torque gains at all RPM. We change the fuel, Valvetronic, and VANOS maps as well as revise the factory torque limiters. We have paid particular attention to increasing low and mid-range torque. The stock BMW software is hampered by settings for 87 octane fuel. By re-mapping the engine programming for 91 octane, we can make more power, torque, and improve fuel mileage - all without harm to the engine or affecting driveability. The throttle response is also improved (quicker) eliminating unwanted and dangerous flat spots in the pedal response.

There are two ways to install our software: mailing the ECU to us for a reflash or do-it-yourself install with our Turner Flash tool:

Mail-In Reflash - lower upfront cost but additional shipping charges. Minimum downtime of at least three days. We have a 24 hour turnaround on shipping the ECU back to you but factor in transit time. Expert installation of your software at our facility.
Turner Flash DIY tool - higher upfront cost but files are emailed back and forth. No downtime - you can still drive the car while we process your tune. Files are emailed back and forth - your stock file comes to us, a tuned file is returned to you. Easy install via Windows laptop. 

Both of these items work together to bring up huge torque increases and much improved driveability. They provide a solid performance boost with a low upfront cost. For an excellent 'bang for the buck' upgrade, the software and intake are a great choice.

TURNER STAGE 2 RACE SOFTWARE + CAT DELETE TEST PIPES
Our Race software has been fine-tuned over the years beginning with our IMSA/CTSCC E92 M3 racecars (2011 GS class champions). We modify over 40 different maps in the ECU for such things as fuel and timing maps at part throttle and full throttle, revised torque settings, knock control, VANOS and cam timing, pedal input, top speed limiter, and rev limiters. Additional tuning has been done for the cat delete - prevent limp mode and check engine lights, fault codes for cat delete, and turning off the secondary air pump (to satisfy race series regulations). Turning off the secondary air pump also disables the cold start sequence so your idle and warm-up will be smoother and quieter. A built-in cold start rev limiter safeguards the engine internals until the oil warms up. Not only is there a lot more power at all RPM but the engine is more responsive and smoother!

Our M3 Test Pipes were designed specifically for race/track use and offer a cost-effective means of removing the very restrictive primary cats. On our Turner M3 and BMW Motorsport M3 GT4 racecars the primary cats and restrictive piping is eliminated. Our M3 cat delete pipes were the first on the market and have proven again and again to make big power on their own or especially when paired with our Stage 2 performance software. Our Test Pipes are Made in the USA with strict production tolerances and quality control. We manufacture our pipes with high quality, mandrel-bent stainless steel pipes and laser-cut flanges for an optimum fitment. New gaskets are included. The factory secondary cats remain in place. Your original O2 sensors plug into the Turner Test Pipes.

Our software is installed via the Turner flashing OBD tool. This tool plugs into the OBD socket in the dash and the performance software is installed from a laptop computer connected to the tool. It also works as a fault code scanner to read and reset diagnostic trouble codes and reset adaptations. The software program requires a Windows XP/Vista/7/8/10 laptop and the installation and setup are very easy (click here for instructions). The OBD tool, cable, and files are shipped to you with simple setup instructions. There is no need to remove your ECU and ship it. Turner Race Software Options:

Minimum Octane

You can choose between 91 or 93. We have developed tuning for the standard 'high octane' premium fuel found around the country (91 is the maximum available in some areas). Our power and torque gains are advertised with 91. If using 93 we can alter the knock sensor logic to extract more power with the higher grade fuel. Additional race fuel maps are also available, contact us for details.

Rev Limit

On 6-speed manual cars we can set a higher engine rev limit. 8,300 is stock; 8,400 is what was used on the GTS model in Europe; 8,600 is the safest raised rev limit that we have used in our race cars. To make things simple we offer it as either stock 8,300 or raised to 8,600. On DCT cars the higher rev limits are for M shift modes only (manual/paddle shift). The higher revs do not work in full auto D modes. Work is continuing on higher limits for D mode.

Launch Control

Our software can also enable a Launch Control feature. To use it, activate M Dynamic Mode, engage first gear, hold the throttle to the floor (it will only rev to 3,500 RPM), and dump the clutch. Keep your foot to the floor and hang on! You don't have to modulate the clutch and throttle - the engine and DSC modules will handle the launch. We experimented with different launch points and found that 3,500 RPM offers a great combination of tire hook-up and torque output. This is available on manual transmission cars only (DCT has their own built-in launch control).

M Dynamic Mode Steering

We can set the M Dynamic Mode (MDM) steering effort as the standard steering. The MDM steering is heavier and requires more effort when driving at higher speeds. Some owners feel that the standard steering is too light and over-boosted and the MDM steering is a nice change. This does not affect the steering effort, or the other features, of MDM.

240E Update

Our performance and race software is built around a specific version of stock BMW software (version 240E). It was released towards the end of M3 production and includes a number of significant changes over older versions for drivability and torque managment. 240E was such a big step forward that it's considered an upgrade all on its own. No worry if you don't have 240E - we will provide you with a free update before the Turner performance software is installed.

In 2015 BMW released a 241E update. There are minor changes to the software code but the tuning maps and data are all the same as the 240E version so there is no need to update to 241E. If the dealer offers it we recommend that you decline. If you're already on 240E there is no reason to switch to 241E (the tuning maps are the same).

TURNER STAGE 1 PERFORMANCE SOFTWARE
Adding power and torque to your M3's V8 is as easy as a flash! Where we can make our software better is by tuning it for higher octane gasoline. The stock software is tuned around the 87 octane available in the US (not that most people would use 87 but BMW engineers must account for that possibility). With our software, the performance of the S65 engine is optimized for the higher 91 or 93 octane. We tune many areas of the engine programming - fuel and timing maps at part throttle and wide-open throttle, revised torque settings and knock control, VAN0S variable valve timing, and more. The throttle response is also improved (quicker and smoother) eliminating unwanted and dangerous flat spots in the factory pedal response. We also offer raised rev limits and the top speed is raised/eliminated. Our software uses the factory 240E update as a base. The 240E has several major enhancements over previous factory file versions. No worry if you don't have 240E - we will provide you with a free update before the Turner performance software is installed. If you have other modifications done to your M3, we can supply you with specially-developed software to maximize the gains from those upgrades.

Turner Motorsport has been developing software on the S65 since our first car in 2008. Since then we have done software projects for street, track, full-race, stroker, and supercharged engine builds using the stock MSS60 DME or a stand-alone Bosch or Motec system. Our Stage 3 kit features a cold-air intake kit, cat-back exhaust, performance software, and is tuned for stock M3 cams (not included in Package, can be added below). This whole package has been precisely tuned to work together and make the most power with as little downside.

The kit is supplied complete with heat shield, intake tube, sealing materials, hardware, and install instructions.

We can supply this Package with either a Borla or Corsa exhaust system. Both are stainless steel cat-back sections with dual tips. The Borla is a little more mellower sound than the Corsa. The Corsa makes a deep, aggressive burble that is a bit on the loud side but not over-the-top. Both are very light weight with the Borla weighing only 28lbs.

The difference between Stage 2 and Stage 3 is that the software we supply is also tuned for the M3 camshaft upgrade. Adding the stock cams from the S50 and S52 M3 engine is a big wake-up call on the 325i motor. You can expect big power gains in the top end. The M3 cams are a perfect blend of power and driveability - you lose almost nothing in low-end torque.

Our TMS Performance Chips include specific tuning for each part of the Package. The chip is the safest and easiest way to get big power from your engine. Our chips require premium fuel (91 or higher) and allow us to alter the settings on the engine management. Because we can be more aggressive in our tuning, we can get a lot of horsepower for very little money.

Related Upgrades: Within any Stage, we recommend our Underdrive Power Pulley Kit. The Pulley Kit will under-drive the alternator, water pump, and power steering pump. Under-driving means each component is moving slower which requires less power. The saved horsepower is put back to the engine where it transfers to power at the wheels. Power gains are typically 10 horsepower at the wheels.

Our Stage 3+ Package for the 1996-99 E36 M3 takes our Stage 2 Package and adds the Schrick performance camshafts, M50 manifold, and matching Stage 3+ Shark Injector software. Adding the M50 manifold produces huge power gains in the upper RPM. If you spend the majority of your time over 5000 RPM, you're going to love this kit. The parts in Stage 3 are our most-popular performance upgrades for the E36 M3: intake, cams, software, complemented by the M50 manifold. While Stages 1 and 2 focus mostly on making mid-range power, Stage 3+ shifts the focus entirely to the top end of the RPM. With the change in the manifold there is not much of a mid-range torque increase. The Conforti software keeps any torque loss to a minimum.

The aFe Euro intake is designed for a 3.5" HFM and includes a heat shield to block warm air from the engine compartment. The aFe intake uses an oiled cotton air filter for maximum air flow and excellent filtration. The kit is supplied complete with heat shield, intake tube, sealing materials, hardware, and install instructions.

Just like in Stage 2, we use the 3.5" HFM from the Porsche 911 (993), along with a custom wiring harness, to work with the Siemens DME and special Turner Motorsport/Conforti software. This HFM reads airflow far more accurately than less-expensive other HFMs on the market. That extra metering allows us to fine-tune the software to make the engine more responsive, smoother, and produce more power! From Stage 2 we learned that the stock 3.2 fuel injectors were nearly maxed out so we specified 24lb injectors for Stage 3.

Stage 3+ is designed for street cars that see a lot of runs to redline and the extra power over 5000 RPM is needed. Where the stock S52 manifold allows a drop in top-end power, the M50 manifold just keeps climbing on the dyno. To preserve engine life, the rev limit is set at 7000 RPM. We have matched the Schrick cams with the M50 manifold, larger HFM and Stage 3+ software to all work seamlessly and reliably. The Stage 4+ Package takes the intake/cam Package from Stage 3 and adds our celebrated 'Shorty' headers and the adapter kit for fitting the M50 manifold (customer-supplied manifold). These headers are a bolt-on to the engine and stock catalytic converters on the E36 M3. Other headers have to be used as a system with additional exhaust sections required for fitment. Our headers bolt straight on using factory gaskets and hardware and make an excellent mid-range improvement in power.

The TMS Shorty Headers are manufactured in the USA and are CARB-certified. These headers are not cheap, knock-off pieces. They are 100% T-304 stainless steel with ceramic coating. The coating and the stainless steel are crucial for the efficient flow of exhaust gas through the header. Other versions use only mild steel. We have also taken the extra step of adding ports for the secondary air system, allowing your car to remain emissions-compliant.

Adding the M50 manifold produces huge power gains in the upper RPM. If you spend the majority of your time over 5000 RPM, you're going to love this kit. This Package includes nearly all of our most-popular street upgrades for the E36 M3: intake, cams, software, and complemented by the M50 manifold. This is a serious kit designed to make big power in the high-RPM. With the change in the manifold there is not much of a mid-range torque increase. For a 335i race or competition car, the exhaust is an important area for upgrades. Removing the catalytic converters eliminates a choke point in the exhaust system and will free up power and torque. It also eliminates the cats as a potential failure point - a broken up cat can clog the exhaust and severly damage your motor. These cat-less DP from CP-E are some of the best we have seen. They are made from 304 stainless steel mandrel-bent piping. The flow characteristics of the piping was especially important to maximize the efficiency of the turbos. With less restriction the turbos work more efficiently and last longer.

In this package we also address the shortcomings in the factory intercooler setup. With higher boost comes more heat in the intake air and the factory intercooler does a poor job of cooling that air before it enters the engine. In the Stage 2+ package we offer multiple intercooler upgrades in increasing levels of capacity - Wagner Evo I, Wagner Evo II, and Active Autowerke Race FMIC. Each is a significant upgrade over the stock 335i FMIC. The Wagner Evo I is our standard FMIC upgrade and fits with the stock piping and requires no modification for fitment. The Wagner Evo II has greater cooling capacity and silicone piping to the stock intake. Some minor modification to plastic trim pieces is required for installation. The AA Race FMIC is the biggest and most extensive that we sell. It features a ram-air effect thanks to a special shroud around the intercooler. The installation is more extensive because AA has chosen to locate the FMIC where it will catch the most airflow from the car's frontal area.

For a 135i race or competition car, the exhaust is an important area for upgrades. Removing the catalytic converters eliminates a choke point in the exhaust system and will free up power and torque. It also eliminates the cats as a potential failure point - a broken up cat can clog the exhaust and severly damage your motor. These cat-less DP from CP-E are some of the best we have seen. They are made from 304 stainless steel mandrel-bent piping. The flow characteristics of the piping was especially important to maximize the efficiency of the turbos. With less restriction the turbos work more efficiently and last longer.

In this package we also address the shortcomings in the factory intercooler setup. With higher boost comes more heat in the intake air and the factory intercooler does a poor job of cooling that air before it enters the engine. In the Stage 2+ package we offer multiple intercooler upgrades in increasing levels of capacity - Wagner Evo I, Wagner Evo II, and Active Autowerke Race FMIC. Each is a significant upgrade over the stock 135i FMIC. The Wagner Evo I is our standard FMIC upgrade and fits with the stock piping and requires no modification for fitment. The Wagner Evo II has greater cooling capacity and silicone piping to the stock intake. Some minor modification to plastic trim pieces is required for installation. The AA Race FMIC is the biggest and most extensive that we sell. It features a ram-air effect thanks to a special shroud around the intercooler. The installation is more extensive because AA has chosen to locate the FMIC where it will catch the most airflow from the car's frontal area.

The aFe Dual Cone intake and Cobb Accessport programmer complete the Stage 2+ package. The larger surface area of the aFe cone filters allows more air to enter the engine - creating more power and torque, a richer engine sound, and better throttle response. The kit is supplied complete with aFe Pro5R filters, mounting shield, intake tubes, sealing materials, hardware, and install instructions. The torque increase and sound from the open intake from low-mid RPM is sensational.

The Cobb software tool puts multiple tuning stages in the palm of your hand. Our Stage 2+ package lines up with the Cobb Stage 2+ tuning maps for an intake and DP (91 or 93+ octane fuel). Simply download the Stage 2+ race map from the Cobb website, plug it in, and install. Select different maps for other upgrades, throttle settings, octane ratings, valet mode, or revert back to stock! If you're moving among Stages simply download a new file from the Cobb website and update your AccessPort programmer! The AccessPort triples as a diagnostic tester/reader and a data logger. It's the most feature-packed programmer on the market today.

* Note that peak power gains are quoted remain the same as Stage 2 but the cooler intake air means there is less of a chance the engine computer will cut power from heatsoak. Adding a full exhaust (from the DP) will make this a Stage 3 kit in the Cobb tuning catalog.

Our Stage 3 Package for the 1996-99 E36 M3 takes our Stage 2 Package and adds the Schrick performance camshafts and matching Stage 3 Shark Injector software. The parts in Stage 3 are what led us to build Performance Stages in the first place. The parts in Stage 3 are our most-popular performance upgrades for the E36 M3: intake, cams, and software. While Stages 1 and 2 focus mostly on making mid-range power, Stage 3 shifts the focus on the top end of the RPM. With the more aggressive camshafts, we boost power over 5000 RPM in addition to more mid-range thrust.

The aFe Euro intake is designed for a 3.5" HFM and includes a heat shield to block warm air from the engine compartment. The aFe intake uses an oiled cotton air filter for maximum air flow and excellent filtration. The kit is supplied complete with heat shield, intake tube, sealing materials, hardware, and install instructions.

Just like in Stage 2, we use a Porsche HFM to work with the Siemens DME and special Turner Motorsport/Conforti software. This HFM reads airflow far more accurately than less-expensive other HFMs on the market. That extra metering allows us to fine-tune the software to make the engine more responsive, smoother, and produce more power! From Stage 2 we learned that the stock 3.2 fuel injectors were nearly maxed out so we specified "24lb" injectors for Stage 3.

Stage 3 is designed for street cars that see a lot of runs to redline and the extra power over 5000 RPM is useable. We have matched the Schrick cams with the larger HFM and Stage 3 software to produce excellent top-end gains and an improvement in the low range while using the stock S52 intake manifold. We prefer the Schrick camshafts because they have been bulletproof through all of our testing and development. This is the best of both worlds - low/mid-RPM muscle with much-improved top-end. We also supply this Package as the Stage 3+ which uses the M50 intake manifold. This provides a lot of top-end power but the expense of low-end torque.

Our flash software is tuned especially for a cold-air intake, maximizing the potential and providing smoother power delivery. We take the stock software and make adjustments for 91 octane (stock software is set around 87). We can get more power and torque, and increase fuel efficiency without affecting driveability or the life of the engine. The throttle response is also improved (quicker) eliminating unwanted and dangerous flat spots in the pedal response.

Our software fully maximizes the 'low-output' N52B30 engine in the 525i. Our software has been carefully developed on the dyno and the road to provide optimal power and torque gains at all RPM. We change the fuel, Valvetronic, and VANOS maps as well as revise the factory torque limiters. We have paid particular attention to increasing low and mid-range torque. The stock BMW software is hampered by settings for 87 octane fuel. By re-mapping the engine programming for 91 octane, we can make more power, torque, and improve fuel mileage - all without harm to the engine or affecting driveability. The throttle response is also improved (quicker) eliminating unwanted and dangerous flat spots in the pedal response.

TURNER POWER PULLEY
Our Power Pulley reduces rotational mass and safely under drives your belt driven auxiliaries for reduced parasitic power loss. The end result: More power to your M5 or M6's rear wheels! Designed to give the best performance benefit with no sacrifices or compromises to your BMW's reliability. These have been tested on hundreds of cars before public release and there are simply NO DOWNSIDES to this upgrade. CNC machined using aircraft grade 6061 aluminum billet, and anodized with a stealthy black coating. Others may advertise "their" crank pulley boasting higher numbers (using a smaller pulley profile), but we have concluded that for street and track driven M5 and M6, this is the best size and design to ensure proper engine temp and auxiliary functionality. As the S85 V10 engine doesn't use a traditional harmonic balancer, all factory harmonics and dampening are fully and properly retained. We've found this pulley alone adds 18 to 22 HP and 17 to 21 Ft/lbs Torque on a stock M5 or M6 with no other mods(!!).

TURNER INTAKE AIR TEMPERATURE SENSOR (IAT) RELOCATION KIT
Got heat soak? The problem is that BMW integrated the S68's intake air temp sensor in the MAF housing, which is sandwiched behind a hot radiator and in some applications next to an even hotter valve cover. The MAF housing absorbs the excess heat from its surroundings and can’t shed it fast enough, and the ECU reads a falsely high intake air temperature.  It then incorrectly adjusts operating parameters to compensate for the false hot air measurement (pulling timing and running a leaner fuel mixture), and torque output drops like a rock.

The fix?  Locate an intake air temp sensor in a location where it can more accurately measure incoming air temps and where it is less prone to heat soak.  By mounting a sensor further away from the heat source and divorcing it from the mass of the MAF housing, it can both resist the effects of heat soak longer and respond to temperature changes more quickly.  The end result?  You’ll experience reduced loss in torque and more consistent power output when you’re pushing your engine hard. 

Result? We recovered 11lb-ft torque at 2500rpm by relocating the temperature sensor on an E39 M5 (E60 owners should expect an even more substantial recovery)!

Installation is as simple as drilling a small hole for the sensor and plugging in the harness.
 

AFE INTAKE SYSTEM
Rid your M5 or M6's V10 powerplant of both of its restrictive factory air boxes with this cold air intake kit by aFe, and you'll cut the airflow restriction IN HALF. Air flow showed an increase of 117% and dyno testing yielded max power gains of  28hp  and  24 ft/lbs of torque . The intake tubes of this kit are custom-designed to accelerate airflow for best performance. Fits all 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 and V10 M5 and M6. 

Kit includes everything necessary to install, including installation instructions. This kit can typically be installed in less than 60 minutes, and uses all factory mounting points (no modifications). The kit uses 2 high performance 360 degree radial flow air filters which are washable/reusable (or oiled - your choice). The filtration media uses the deepest pleats in the industry, allowing the most surface area and airflow possible, in the space allowed. The increased airflow is significant enough that it is audible while driving, giving your 5.0 liter V10 a subtly more aggressive sound when revving or under load. Best of all, this is a SAFE product that will not cause any longevity issues or malfunctions to your BMW's intricate engine management system. 

SUPERSPRINT HEADERS/TEST PIPES
This special Race software is designed to work with sport headers that eliminate the primary catalytic converters. On our own M5 project vehicles, the combination of our software and Supersprint headers* netted 30hp and 50ft-lbs of torque - a massive transformation to an already mighty car. While there are incredible gains in power and torque to be had with the addition of headers, customer feedback was telling us some owners were seeking a less expensive and less labor-intensive option - those customers will be particularly interested in the weld-on test pipes below.

The factory header system on the M5/M6 V10 is nicely designed - except where the primary tubes join together. Here the factory tubes are crushed in size and joined in narrow housing ahead of the catalytic converters. Supersprint has designed a fully tubular header and collector system that is fully mandrel bent and makes no compromises. They even patented the design. With a complete exhaust system, we recorded gains of over 60hp! These headers can be connected to either a factory secondary cat or a Supersprint high-flow metallic cat.

What sets these headers apart from others is the expertise and craftsmanship from Supersprint in Italy. These are 100% stainless steel headers with true mandrel bends. It's a carefully engineered header and merge collector design with superior craftsmanship to other systems (sometimes knockoffs to the original Supersprint). Supersprint spends considerable time in R&D, experimenting with piping sizes and layouts to get the most horsepower gain (confirmed with their in-house dyno). Fitment is also a key consideration and this is where Supersprint's commitment to quality fabrication and construction set them apart from cheaper systems.

Supersprint exhaust is widely recognized as the leader in complete exhaust system upgrades - extremely high quality, well designed for optimal flow, and amazing sound. A Supersprint exhaust rewards you with a terrific sound, long lasting construction and excellent fitment. The Supersprint sound is very 'European' which fits the sporting sophistication of BMWs perfectly. Most systems are also modular - sections can be added or removed to custom tailor the exhaust sound to your preference. Aside from 'Race' systems, their mufflers meet European noise laws so you get a refined and tuned sound without being excessively loud. Most Supersprint systems are built with larger diameter piping to improve exhaust flow which helps the engine do less work and make more horsepower! Supersprint exhausts generally run at a premium over other systems but no other system on the market can match their quality, performance, or reputation!

TURNER STAGE 2 PERFORMANCE SOFTWARE
Adding power and torque to the M5 V10 is as easy as a flash! Where we can make our software better is by tuning it for higher octane gasoline. The stock software is tuned around the 87octane available in the US (most M5 owners would never use 87 but BMW engineers must account for that possibility). With our software, the performance of the S85 engine is optimized for the higher 91 or 93 octane. We tune many areas of the engine programming -

  • fuel and timing maps at part throttle and wide-open throttle,
  • revised torque settings and knock control,
  • improved VAN0S variable valve timing,
  • smoother and faster pedal response
  • top speed limiter eliminated
  • optional raised rev limit

Our software uses a new version of stock BMW software as its base. Even the new stock software is an improvement over the original M5. If you have other modifications done to your M5/M6, we can supply you with specially-developed software to maximize the gains from those upgrades.

Turner Motorsport has been developing software on the S85 since our first car in 2006. Since then we have done software projects for street, track, and 5.7L stroker engine builds using the stock MSS65 DME. Engine tunes have been developed and checked on our Dynapack chassis dyno and further refined with real world testing. For track cars, our Stage 2 cat-delete software will clear check engine lights and faults (to satisfy race series regulations).

Our software is installed via the Turner flashing OBD tool. This tool plugs into the OBD socket in the dash and the performance software is installed from a laptop computer connected to the tool. It also works as a fault code scanner to read and reset diagnostic trouble codes and reset adaptations. The software program requires a Windows XP/Vista/7/8/10 laptop and the installation and setup are very easy. The OBD tool, cable, and files are shipped to you with simple setup instructions. There is no need to remove your ECU and ship it. You can have your M5 flashed in under an hour from the convenience of your garage or driveway!​

Minimum Octane
You can choose between 91 or 93. We have developed tuning for the standard 'high octane' premium fuel found around the country (91 is the maximum available in some areas). Our power and torque gains are advertised with 93. The 91 octane version will have less timing and slightly less horsepower gains.​

Rev Limit
We have two rev limit options: stock 8,250 and raised 8,500. Having a higher rev limit lets you stay in gear longer and avoid an untimely upshift. Higher rev limits should only be used for brief moments and never for sustained running. Additional engine maintenance, with frequent oil changes and oil analysis, is strongly recommended.​​

Base File Update
Our performance software is built around a specific version of stock software that BMW released as an update. It includes a number of significant changes over older versions for driveability and torque management. The M5 update was such a big step forward that it's considered an upgrade all on its own. No worry if you don't have it - we will provide you with a free update before the Turner performance software is installed

The Stage 4 Package takes the intake/cam Package from Stage 3 and adds our celebrated 'Shorty' headers. These headers are a bolt-on to the engine and stock catalytic converters on the E36 M3. Other headers have to be used as a system with additional exhaust sections required for fitment. Our headers bolt straight on using factory gaskets and hardware and make an excellent mid-range improvement in power.

The TMS Shorty Headers are manufactured in the USA and are CARB-certified. These headers are not cheap, knock-off pieces. They are 100% T-304 stainless steel with ceramic coating. The coating and the stainless steel are crucial for the efficient flow of exhaust gas through the header. Other versions use only mild steel. We have also taken the extra step of adding ports for the secondary air system, allowing your car to remain emissions-compliant.

As with Stage 3, this Package includes the aFe Euro Cold-Air Intake, 24lb fuel injectors, Schrick performance camshafts, Porsche HFM, and special Stage 4 TMS Shark Injector software. This is a further refinement to Stage 3 - boosting top end horsepower while still making more torque down low. This Stage 1.5 Package adds the option of larger 21.5lb fuel injectors to the Stage 1 Euro HFM kit. The 21.5lb injectors (23lb at BMW's 3.5 bar) were standard on the S52 3.2-liter engines. Because that engine has found its way into many other E36s, we put this kit together to use the Euro HFM, intake, and the stock 3.2 injectors. Also, it's been necessary for some people to add more fuel to account for cleaner-burning gasoline used in the US. With the lower grade fuel, pinging, knocking, or lean conditions may be experienced with the stock 3.0 injectors. The issues people are having seem to be geography-related (California, the Northeast, etc.) but many people feel safer having a fuel 'safety net' and this Package meets their goals. We also offer a Stage 2 Package with 24lb injectors if these are still not flowing enough fuel. There is no performance gain with only adding the 21.5lb injectors.

For a 335i race or competition car, the exhaust is an important area for upgrades. Removing the catalytic converters eliminates a choke point in the exhaust system and will free up power and torque. It also eliminates the cats as a potential failure point - a broken up cat can clog the exhaust and severly damage your motor. These cat-less DP from CP-E are some of the best we have seen. They are made from 304 stainless steel mandrel-bent piping. The flow characteristics of the piping was especially important to maximize the efficiency of the turbos. With less restriction the turbos work more efficiently and last longer.

TURNER POWER PULLEY
Our Power Pulley reduces rotational mass and safely under drives your belt driven auxiliaries for reduced parasitic power loss. The end result: More power to your M5 or M6's rear wheels! Designed to give the best performance benefit with no sacrifices or compromises to your BMW's reliability. These have been tested on hundreds of cars before public release and there are simply NO DOWNSIDES to this upgrade. CNC machined using aircraft grade 6061 aluminum billet, and anodized with a stealthy black coating. Others may advertise "their" crank pulley boasting higher numbers (using a smaller pulley profile), but we have concluded that for street and track driven M5 and M6, this is the best size and design to ensure proper engine temp and auxiliary functionality. As the S85 V10 engine doesn't use a traditional harmonic balancer, all factory harmonics and dampening are fully and properly retained. We've found this pulley alone adds 18 to 22 HP and 17 to 21 Ft/lbs Torque on a stock M5 or M6 with no other mods(!!).

TURNER INTAKE AIR TEMPERATURE SENSOR (IAT) RELOCATION KIT
Got heat soak? The problem is that BMW integrated the S68's intake air temp sensor in the MAF housing, which is sandwiched behind a hot radiator and in some applications next to an even hotter valve cover. The MAF housing absorbs the excess heat from its surroundings and can’t shed it fast enough, and the ECU reads a falsely high intake air temperature.  It then incorrectly adjusts operating parameters to compensate for the false hot air measurement (pulling timing and running a leaner fuel mixture), and torque output drops like a rock.

The fix?  Locate an intake air temp sensor in a location where it can more accurately measure incoming air temps and where it is less prone to heat soak.  By mounting a sensor further away from the heat source and divorcing it from the mass of the MAF housing, it can both resist the effects of heat soak longer and respond to temperature changes more quickly.  The end result?  You’ll experience reduced loss in torque and more consistent power output when you’re pushing your engine hard. 

Result? We recovered 11lb-ft torque at 2500rpm by relocating the temperature sensor on an E39 M5 (E60 owners should expect an even more substantial recovery)!

Installation is as simple as drilling a small hole for the sensor and plugging in the harness.
 

AFE INTAKE SYSTEM
Rid your M5 or M6's V10 powerplant of both of its restrictive factory air boxes with this cold air intake kit by aFe, and you'll cut the airflow restriction IN HALF. Air flow showed an increase of 117% and dyno testing yielded max power gains of  28hp  and  24 ft/lbs of torque . The intake tubes of this kit are custom-designed to accelerate airflow for best performance. Fits all 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 and V10 M5 and M6. 

Kit includes everything necessary to install, including installation instructions. This kit can typically be installed in less than 60 minutes, and uses all factory mounting points (no modifications). The kit uses 2 high performance 360 degree radial flow air filters which are washable/reusable (or oiled - your choice). The filtration media uses the deepest pleats in the industry, allowing the most surface area and airflow possible, in the space allowed. The increased airflow is significant enough that it is audible while driving, giving your 5.0 liter V10 a subtly more aggressive sound when revving or under load. Best of all, this is a SAFE product that will not cause any longevity issues or malfunctions to your BMW's intricate engine management system. 

TURNER STAGE 1 PERFORMANCE SOFTWARE
Adding power and torque to the M5 V10 is as easy as a flash! Where we can make our software better is by tuning it for higher octane gasoline. The stock software is tuned around the 87octane available in the US (most M5 owners would never use 87 but BMW engineers must account for that possibility). With our software, the performance of the S85 engine is optimized for the higher 91 or 93 octane. We tune many areas of the engine programming -

  • fuel and timing maps at part throttle and wide-open throttle,
  • revised torque settings and knock control,
  • improved VAN0S variable valve timing,
  • smoother and faster pedal response
  • top speed limiter eliminated
  • optional raised rev limit

Our software uses a new version of stock BMW software as its base. Even the new stock software is an improvement over the original M5. If you have other modifications done to your M5/M6, we can supply you with specially-developed software to maximize the gains from those upgrades.

Turner Motorsport has been developing software on the S85 since our first car in 2006. Since then we have done software projects for street, track, and 5.7L stroker engine builds using the stock MSS65 DME. Engine tunes have been developed and checked on our Dynapack chassis dyno and further refined with real world testing. For track cars, our Stage 2 cat-delete software will clear check engine lights and faults (to satisfy race series regulations).

Our software is installed via the Turner flashing OBD tool. This tool plugs into the OBD socket in the dash and the performance software is installed from a laptop computer connected to the tool. It also works as a fault code scanner to read and reset diagnostic trouble codes and reset adaptations. The software program requires a Windows XP/Vista/7/8/10 laptop and the installation and setup are very easy. The OBD tool, cable, and files are shipped to you with simple setup instructions. There is no need to remove your ECU and ship it. You can have your M5 flashed in under an hour from the convenience of your garage or driveway!​

Minimum Octane
You can choose between 91 or 93. We have developed tuning for the standard 'high octane' premium fuel found around the country (91 is the maximum available in some areas). Our power and torque gains are advertised with 93. The 91 octane version will have less timing and slightly less horsepower gains.​

Rev Limit
We have two rev limit options: stock 8,250 and raised 8,500. Having a higher rev limit lets you stay in gear longer and avoid an untimely upshift. Higher rev limits should only be used for brief moments and never for sustained running. Additional engine maintenance, with frequent oil changes and oil analysis, is strongly recommended.​​

Base File Update
Our performance software is built around a specific version of stock software that BMW released as an update. It includes a number of significant changes over older versions for driveability and torque management. The M5 update was such a big step forward that it's considered an upgrade all on its own. Our Stage 2 for the E36 M3 and MZ3 is a building block to Stages 3, 4, and 5. All of the following stages require the parts from Stage 2. In this Package we supply a aFe Euro Cold Air Intake, TMS 3.5" HFM with adapter, "24lb" Bosch fuel injectors, associated installation hardware and instructions, and TMS-exclusive Stage 2 software (co-developed with Jim Conforti).

The aFe Euro intake is designed for a 3.5" HFM and includes a heat shield to block warm air from the engine compartment. The aFe intake uses an oiled cotton air filter for maximum air flow and excellent filtration. The kit is supplied complete with heat shield, intake tube, sealing materials, hardware, and install instructions.

The HFM is 3.5 inches in diameter - a half-inch larger than the stock HFM. We selected the HFM from the Porsche 911 (993) because of its superior metering capability over the Euro M3 or 540 HFM. This HFM comes with a custom wiring harness for a seamless install and full compatibility with the Siemens DME and Conforit software. The beauty of this HFM is that it reads airflow far more accurately than less-expensive other HFMs on the market. Imagine the data stream on a strip of tape 3 feet long. A stock or Euro/540 HFM will read that data 50 times for the length of the tape. The Porsche HFM will read the same data 300 times in that same distance. That extra metering allows us to fine-tune the software to make the engine more responsive, smoother, and produce more power!

We found that the stock fuel injectors on the S52 engine were at their maximum capacity with the larger HFM and intake. To prevent dangerous lean conditions we spec'd out a larger set of Bosch fuel injectors (24lb/hour or 25.5lb at the BMW-spec 3.5bar of pressure). The software was recalibrated to match the larger fuel flow.

The rest of this Package is made up of a HFM adapter to work with the stock throttle body boot (Samco silicone boot optional), installation hardware, HFM wiring harness, and installation instructions. As a Package, installation time for the typical do-it-yourselfer would be 3-4 hours.

Our Stage 1 kit featuring a cold-air intake kit and matching performance software. The aFe intake is a cone filter with a heat-blocking shield around it. Our flash software is tuned especially for a cold-air intake, maximizing the potential and providing smoother power delivery. We take the stock software and make adjustments for 91 octane (stock software is set around 87). We can get more power and torque, and increase fuel efficiency without affecting driveability or the life of the engine. The throttle response is also improved (quicker) eliminating unwanted and dangerous flat spots in the pedal response.

Our software fully maximizes the 'low-output' N52B30 engine in the 325i. Our software has been carefully developed on the dyno and the road to provide optimal power and torque gains at all RPM. We change the fuel, Valvetronic, and VANOS maps as well as revise the factory torque limiters. We have paid particular attention to increasing low and mid-range torque. The stock BMW software is hampered by settings for 87 octane fuel. By re-mapping the engine programming for 91 octane, we can make more power, torque, and improve fuel mileage - all without harm to the engine or affecting driveability. The throttle response is also improved (quicker) eliminating unwanted and dangerous flat spots in the pedal response.

There are two ways to install our software: mailing the ECU to us for a reflash or do-it-yourself install with our Turner Flash tool:

The difference between Stage 2 and Stage 3 is that the software we supply is also tuned for the M3 camshaft upgrade. Adding the stock cams from the S50 and S52 M3 engine is a big wake-up call on the 325i motor. You can expect big power gains in the top end. The M3 cams are a perfect blend of power and driveability - you lose almost nothing in low-end torque.

The software is tuned by BMW tuning whiz Jim Conforti and supplied with the Shark Injector. The Shark Injector is a do-it-yourself reflash tool that plugs into the OBD diagnostic plug in your dash. With the push of a button, it will copy your stock software and reflash your computer with the performance tune. You can set it back to stock at any time by following the same procedure.

Both of these items are packaged and work together. They provide a solid performance boost with a low upfront cost. For an excellent 'bang for the buck' upgrade, the software and intake are a great choice (TMS Underdrive Pulleys would also be on that list).

For a 135i race or competition car, the exhaust is an important area for upgrades. Removing the catalytic converters eliminates a choke point in the exhaust system and will free up power and torque. It also eliminates the cats as a potential failure point - a broken up cat can clog the exhaust and severly damage your motor. These cat-less DP from CP-E are some of the best we have seen. They are made from 304 stainless steel mandrel-bent piping. The flow characteristics of the piping was especially important to maximize the efficiency of the turbos. With less restriction the turbos work more efficiently and last longer.

Turner Plug-and-Play IAT Relocation Kit

All vehicles will lose some degree of performance due to heat soak under the right operating conditions.  Engine management systems constantly monitor operating conditions and modifying parameters based on sensor inputs. BMW integrated the intake air temp sensor in the MAF housing on models such as the E39 M5, and, being sandwiched behind a hot radiator and in some applications next to an even hotter valve cover, this is less than ideal for performance applications. Absorbing excess heat from its surroundings, the MAF can’t shed it fast enough, and the ECU reads an inaccurately high intake air temperature. Compensating for this false hot air measurement, the ECU pulls timing and runs a richer fuel mixture, resulting in a significant loss of torque.

What can you do?  Locate an intake air temp sensor in a location where it can properly measure incoming air temps and where it's less prone to heat soak. Mounting the sensor further away from the heat source and isolating it from the MAF housing, it can both resist the effects of heat soak longer and respond to temperature changes more quickly.  The result is you’ll experience reduced torque loss and more consistent power output when you’re pushing your engine hard. 

The Turner engineering team was initially skeptical of the claimed performance benefits of this modification. They first set out validate the functionality and performance benefit of a temp sensor relocation. Replicating stop-and-go traffic heat soak in a 2001 540i was a simple task in a controlled environment - their dynometer. First the car was heat soaked to simulate being stuck in traffic or moving at low speeds by running the car four times on the dyno with the dyno's cooling fans disabled. The fans were then turned on for three more runs to observe the recovery rate once air flow was reintroduced. The test: following this procedure once with a stock IAT, and once with their relocation kit in place. 

The result? Turner recovered 11lb-ft torque at 2500rpm through use of their relocation kit, with even greater recovery to be found for M5 owners. Here are the heat soak-related torque losses Turner experienced:

The Turner engineering team designed a complete plug and play kit (unlike all other options on the market) that makes for quick, easy, and reversible installation. Weather-sealed connectors keep out the elements, while sheathed wiring offers a clean appearance underhood. With a harness nearly 3 feet long - the Turner IAT relocation kit offers flexibility in positioning, but not too long that you're left with unsightly excess wiring. Turner recommends positioning the sensor in a location away from engine heat, but still within the intake ducting to achieve accurate intake temp readings - such as the far side of the base of the airbox. Vehicles with cold air intakes with cone-style filters can even position the sensor in the end of the filter. Simply drill a hole in your (cool) location of choice and plug in the harness. Adding the M50 manifold produces huge power gains in the upper RPM. If you spend the majority of your time over 5000 RPM, you're going to love this kit. The parts in Stage 3+ are our most-popular performance upgrades for the E36 328i: intake, cams, software, complemented by the M50 manifold. Stage 3+ shifts the focus entirely to the top end of the RPM. With the change in the manifold there is not much of a mid-range torque increase. The Conforti software keeps any torque loss to a minimum.

The software is also Conforti-tuned and supplied with the Shark Injector software loader. The Shark Injector is a do-it-yourself reflash tool that plugs into the diagnostic plug in the engine bay. With the push of a button, it will copy your stock software and reflash your computer with the performance tune. You can set it back to stock at any time by following the same procedure.

The aFe intake is made with heat-blocking materials, reducing underhood temperatures and not contributing to heat soak of the air filter. aFe uses an oiled cotton air filter for maximum air flow and excellent filtration. The kit is supplied complete with heat shield, carbon fiber intake tube, sealing materials, hardware, and install instructions.

Related Upgrades: We are often asked what would complement our software and intake packages. Within any Stage, we recommend our Underdrive Power Pulley Kits. The Power Pulley Kit will under-drive the alternator, water pump, and power steering pump. Under-driving means each component is moving slower which requires less power. The saved horsepower is put back to the engine where it transfers to power at the wheels. Power gains are typically 10 horsepower at the wheels.

We also recommend upgrading the cat-back muffler for slightly more performance, lighter weight, and a more-aggressive sound. Our favorite E36 mufflers are the Supersprint, Borla, or Corsa exhausts. The Supersprint is the quietest and most like stock while the Corsa is the most aggressive (Borla being in the middle). You can expect a gain of 5whp with any of these exhausts.
