Amesbury, MA. -- November 13th, 2017 -- With the North American 2017 road racing season completed, Turner Motorsport turns focus away from road racing to compete “offroad” in the 50th Annual SCORE Baja 1000 later this week.

The SCORE Baja 1000 takes place in Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula and is set to take the green flag in Ensenada on November 16th. This year’s race will follow the 1180-mile point-to-point course from Ensenada to La Paz traveling the length of the peninsula North to South.

The race has historically attracted many notable competitors such as Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, Patrick Dempsey, Travis Pastrana and many more.

For this year’s race, the four returning Turner drivers will be joined by two additional drivers necessary to complete this year’s grueling 48-hour plus off road endurance challenge over the challenging Mexican terrain.

Drivers Michael Marsal, Markus Palttala, Will Turner and Jay Baier competed in the 2016 SCORE Baja 1000 last year to complete the almost 900-mile loop race from Ensenada to El Rosarito and back to finish fourth in the Baja Challenge class, narrowly missing a podium.

“Last year’s race went very well considering the steep learning curve for our team. Said Michael Marsal. “I am looking forward to getting back out there this year with everything we know after our experience from last year. This event is like nothing else we have ever done so it’s pretty exciting.”

This year, the returning four man team will be joined by two European road racing superstars, Oskar Slingerland from the Netherlands and James Rossiter from England. Both drivers come from significant road racing backgrounds.

Slingerland is no stranger from Endurance challenges having competed in both the 24 Hour of Le Mans as well as the Rolex 24 at Daytona driving for Lotus Jetalliance and Matt Connolly Motorsports.

Rossiter currently drives in Super GT and Super Formula and is also no stranger to endurance racing, with appearances in several 24 Hours of Le Mans in GTE and LMP2. Previously, Rossiter was an F1 Test driver for Honda, Super Aguri and Force India.

“We are excited to be back to make another attempt at the Baja 1000.” Said Markus Palttala. “We learned a ton last year so we are ready to get back out there and put some of our experience to work. I think we have a great team put together so as long as we put together a clean race, we should be in the running at the end.”

The 6-man team is set to compete in the BC-6 Baja Challenge Class entry to take the green flag on Thursday, November 16th and take the checkered sometime Saturday, November 18th.

Will Turner added, “I have done a lot of road racing and been fairly successful at it...Off road racing is totally different, sure it a race but that’s about all of the similarities. Imagine yourself in the middle of a desert, at night, on terrain that you have never seen before, trying to drive faster than the 50 or 60 competitors that might be directly on your tail all while not even realizing that your inches away from a 200 foot cliff to your right...just amazing !”

Marsal and Palttala will kick off the race to complete the first leg handing it off to Slingerland and Rossiter to complete the middle section. Turner and Baier will bring it across the finish line to complete the third leg.
