Amesbury, MA. – June 29th, 2015 -- Varying track and weather conditions set the stage for this weekend’s Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen at the historic Watkins Glen International for round five of the Tudor United SportsCar Championship.

Despite the challenging conditions the No. 97 IHG® Rewards Club BMW of Michael Marsal and defending champion Markus Palttala captured a ninth place finish after running inside the top-five up until a punctured tire dropped the driver duo several positions in the final minutes of the race.

In Sunday’s six-hour endurance contest, the No. 97 of Marsal and Palttala started from the eighth spot. Michael Marsal took the green flag to kick off the race, going on to complete an impressive two and a one half hour triple stint before handing the car off to his co-driver Markus Palttala.

Marsal worked hard battling for position to keep the car within striking distance of the GTD class leaders, winning several hard-fought battles for position to keep the No. 97 inside the top-ten on the 3.4-mile, 11-turn road course.

“This really was one of the most exciting races I have ever driven,” said Michael Marsal after stepping out of the No. 97 BMW. “Our Turner BMW was hooked up and really is a blast to drive at Watkins Glen. I was able to have some good battles with the Porsche and Audi and hand the car to Markus in good position.”

With a quick pit stop and driver change, Markus Palttala got behind the wheel of the No. 97 beating several cars out of pit lane to “leap frog” from tenth to eighth. In the opening minutes of his stint, Palttala was quickly able to pass several cars to break into the top-five.

Three hours and twenty-three minutes into the race, Palttala secured the lead from the No. 63 Ferrari and was able to build up a significant 23 second gap over second place before a full course caution brought much of the GTD field into the pits.

As cars exited pit lane, conditions quickly changed forcing much of the GTD field to return to the pits for change over to rain tires. The challenging track conditions ultimately forced a red flag with one hour and thirty minutes remaining in the race.

With twenty minutes remaining in the six-hour race, Palttala held onto fifth until contact by another GTD entry sent both cars to pit lane for punctured tires forfeiting the likely top-five finish for the No. 97 IHG® Rewards Club BMW.

“The conditions were a huge challenge in the final two hours,” commented Markus Palttala. “In many parts of the track visibility was drastically reduced making any type of consistent lap very difficult. It was great to see Michael have such a great stint, it is too bad we didn’t have a better finish after leading the race up until the weather changed.”

As the checkered flag waved, Palttala was forced into pit lane to change out the left rear tire to finish ninth.

The blue and yellow Turner BMW will be headed home to Lime Rock Park for the next round of the Tudor Championship season on July 25th where Michael Marsal will be joined by Turner Championship driver Dane Cameron for the Northeast Grand Prix.

Cameron will be substituting for season regular Markus Palttala, who will be competing for BMW Motorsport in the 24 Hours of Spa. Stay tuned and connected via Turner Motorsport social media for updates.
