Amesbury, MA. -- September 25th, 2017 -- The No. 96 BMW M6 GT3 of Jens Klingmann and Jesse Krohn finished fifth in the America’s Tire 150 on the 2.238-mile 11-turn Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca marking the penultimate round of the 2017 WeatheTech SportsCar Championship.

Recent balance of performance adjustments to the BMW by the IMSA competition department ultimately decided the team’s results after the driver pair put together two text book stints behind the wheel of their Turner BMW starting from fourth.

The fifth place finish is the sixth top-five finish of the season for the No. 96 Turner BMW M6 GT3 following the most recent success with impressive results in each of the last two rounds at Road America and Virginia International Raceway.

Jens Klingmann took the green flag to endure a hectic start entering turn one dropping back to seventh after some light contact from heavy traffic. Klingmann pushed on to slowly regain positions to clinch fourth before the first pit stop.

Jens Klingmann added, “We had a strong BMW here at Laguna Seca and despite the early on radio communications issues, I was able to complete a solid stint to hand the car over to Jesse (Krohn) in a good position for him to finish out the race.”

At the 45 minute mark, Klingmann entered pit lane for a full service stop and driver change for Jesse Krohn.

A Strong performance by Jesse put the No. 96 in fourth at striking distance for a podium. Then an opportunistic strategy call was made to pit Jesse just before a full course caution allowing the No. 96 to leapfrog to second.

However, in order to finish the race from that point everyone’s fuel mileage would have been stretched. The reduction of fuel capacity after the last race made it apparent that the Turner BMW would need one more stop to finish confidently and it was believed that other teams would have to stop as well. Disappointingly, the cars in positions three through five did not have to stop again.

With six minutes remaining, Krohn entered pit lane from second place for one final 5 second fuel stop necessary to make it to the checkered flag forcing the No. 96 back to fifth to cross the line.

“Despite a very well executed race on track by both drivers as well as in pit lane by the crew, we finished fifth behind several cars that we clearly outperformed due to recent BoP adjustments made by IMSA in a missed attempt to even performance in the GTD class,” said Team Strategist Don Salama. “Following our last race at ViR we received a reduction of fuel capacity by 6 liters which was the deciding factor in our final stop.”

Any yellow in the final hour would of allowed the No. 96 to reach the finish without a final stop and splash.

Will Turner added, “These Recent BoP adjustments made before round eleven significantly affected our competitiveness against cars like the Ferrari, Acura and Porsche that did not have to make a third stop to finish the race and ultimately penalized us in a well-executed race.”

With round eleven in the books, the team will prepare for the final round of the 2017 WeatherTech Championship at Road Atlanta in less than two weeks for the 10-Hour Petit Le Mans.
