BMW Control Arm Replacements & Upgrades for BMW E90 M3 S65 4.0L

Please ensure your correct model is selected

Control arms, and their integrated ball joints, are some of the most crucial components on a BMW suspension. The control arms literally control the wheel and suspension as they go through their range of motions. They do more than just keep the alignment in a constant spec - they are a vital locating component for the suspension itself. A faulty or worn control arm or ball joint is a very dangerous and potentially life-threatening problem so make sure they are inspected and replaced at regular intervals.

Most control arms for BMWs consist of an inner and outer ball joint made of plastic, rubber, Delrin, or metal and covered in grease with a rubber boot to seal it from the outside. The ball joint rotates and spins as the control arm goes through its movements and that will wear the ball joint and make it loose. The grease inside the housing can also get used up, evaporate, or become contaminated from moisture and foreign particles. As the ball joint becomes worn it can result in excess movement within the housing. Your steering and handling will become less precise and there is usually a light clunking or clicking sound. In rare and extreme cases the ball joint can separate from the control arm completely, leading to a total loss of suspension and steering control. You should have the ball joint play checked annually and replace them every 3-4 years. Most track organizations will not allow a car if they are older than three years.

Control arms also take abuse from impacts and handling forces. Aluminum control arms will generally bend and prevent an accurate alignment. Steel control arms will crack and fracture and require close inspection annually and replacement every 3-4 years.

We sell OE BMW, OEM, and performance upgrade control arms from proven manufacturers. The control arm is so important to a BMW suspension that we insist on only top quality brands and designs and will never sell a control arm based on price alone. We also have upgrade packages with superior designs and better bushing options and we have bundled these together with valuable package savings.

Control arm bushings play a key role in connecting the wheels to the chassis of the vehicle. Tasked with keeping suspension geometry in check while absorbing noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) factory rubber bushings were engineered to provide a balance of comfort and control. As a factory bushing ages, it becomes brittle and begins to harden. When this happens the bushing will actually shrink and allow excess play in the suspension joint. This is typically felt by a sudden jerk forward after the car comes to a stop and is a leading cause of "sloppy" or "loose" suspension feel. By replacing the bushing with a full polyurethane unit or using a bushing insert, this play is eliminated since the suspension joint is being supported by a much stiffer material that will not harden or shrink over time. Additionally, the inherent stiffness of the urethane material translates body forces much more directly. This means steering inputs from the driver are effectively transferred to the wheels and vital road information is transmitted properly from the wheels to the driver.

Powerflex Black Series bushings are the ultimate in track and race bushings. Featuring 95A durometer polyurethane, Black Series bushings are 25% stiffer than street bushings. Engineered to perform, Powerflex performance polyurethane control arm bushings offer a supreme level of control, while still providing enough comfort for the street, with advanced polyurethane that reduces NVH that often accompanies lesser bushings. Expect improved steering feel, turn in, more responsive handling and overall improved chassis composure with Powerflex performance polyurethane control arm bushings.

Poweflex is a leading manufacturer of aftermarket suspension bushings. Using state of the art design and manufacturing, all replacement bushings are engineered to out-perform and out-last the ones that came in the car. Each line of bushings is meticulously tested and then re-tested to ensure perfect fitment and enduring quality through the life of the vehicle. A full lifetime warranty backs every one of their products and demonstrates the level of confidence and commitment Powerflex has to their customers.

*NOTE: ONLY FOR CARS WITH TRUE REAR COIL OVER CONVERSION - NOT COMPATIBLE WITH STOCK REAR SPRINGS* Fall-Line Motorsports has taken everything they've learned in manufacturing over the last decade to create an ultra-high-end interpretation of the G8X / F8X M2 M3 M4 and E9X M3 lower camber arm. Fall-Line's bespoke version discards the deformation-prone stamped steel arm that includes a provision for the rear coil spring in favor of 5-axis CNC machined, billet aluminum that eliminates the rear coil mount. This pair has been gorgeously crafted and pocketed (to save weight without compromising rigidity) and is hard coat black anodized for ultimate resistance to wear. So too has the hardware been given an upgrade—10.9 grade corrosion-resistant extended bolts are included to replace the inferior factory pieces. These arms represent another exciting entry into the often neglected F8X / E9X suspension arm market and add valuable peace of mind for street or motorsport duty from the undisputed champion within the BMW realm. A byproduct of multi-link suspension arrangements is a dynamic change in the car’s alignment settings- when making an adjustment to one attribute like camber, track width and toe will follow. This is especially true for the E9x cars, as the original BMW camber eccentric bolt has an impact on toe as well. Alignments are made faster and simpler when using a set of aftermarket lower arms, enabling the alignment tech to easily reset toe after adjusting camber. The standard toe link kit by Fall Line Motorsports is designed to simplify toe changes at an alignment facility while still keeping cost reasonable. The standard toe link kit keeps costs down by using a traditional jam nut design in a sturdy billet arm. Adjustable threaded rod ends turn into and out of the arm for a wide range of toe adjustment, and enable an alignment technician to easily set toe on a lowered car.

Fall Line’s mono ball spherical bearing conversion kit transforms the front steering and suspension feel of the M3. The factory rubber bushing is very large, and is prone to substantial deflection under load, as the M3 is put through its paces. Deflection of the bushing can create unwanted geometry change, steering wobble under braking, and even hysteresis of the thrust arm. The bearing’s housing is precision machine from aluminum, to create a rigid part that allows for the M3’s thrust arm to move smoothly through its range of suspension travel. The improvement in steering and suspension feel is immediate and truly enhances the personality of the M3. *V2 improved design also incorporates hard coat clear anodized finish*

These high-performance rear toe links are designed to eliminate the vagueness and flex associated with the stock linkages, which used rubber bushings and an alloy designed to flex under load. During hard acceleration and braking, this can actually change the toe angle, and cause the car to feel unstable during hard cornering. The flex is eliminated by utilizing Teflon coated, machined steel rod ends with billet aluminum rod for the links. The Rods have been machined with a hex in the center to aid adjustment.

When an E9X is lowered beyond the limits of just lowering springs, the rear wheels toe-in excessively. This excessive rear toe leads to premature wear, that many people attribute to an increase in negative camber. It has become a common belief that an extremely low vehicle will wear the tires wrong as a matter of consequence. It has become standard practice to go as low as you can and proceed to replace your tires every five to ten thousand miles. Whats more is that when the vehicle reaches a certain ride height, the factory arms become maxed out and there is no way to compensate and dial in the proper toe. You're left with an improperly aligned vehicle that is in effect worse off than it was with the stock suspension installed.

This is not only uneconomical but improper and unsafe. ECS Tuning is proud to offer a solution for this problem in the form of Rogue Engineering E9X adjustable rear toe arms. These arms allow for greater toe adjustment on vehicles that have been lowered with a coilover suspension. With the toe set properly the tires can contact the road properly this maximizes grip and minimizes wear.

Features:

  • 100% machined and anodized, 6061-T6 lightweight aluminum arms
  • High-strength, 3-piece, rod end (with carbon fiber reinforced, PTFE race) offers longer life for street compared to standard rod ends
  • SEALS-IT Rod end seals keep dirt, water, and other contaminants out
  • Rod ends feature grease fittings, to allow for rod end serviceability.
  • Lighter than stock!  (Stock is 875g, RE arms are 640g)
  • Extremely easy installation and adjustment (your alignment shop will LOVE you!)

Nearly every car manufactured in the modern era carries a dark secret – fully-adjustable suspension has been all but eliminated in the name of cost-cutting and assembly-line efficiency. What this means for you is increased tire wear and more frequent replacement, as a “full alignment” consists only of rudimentary toe-angle adjustment. For over forty years, K-MAC has been hard at work developing a solution to this problem with patented innovations in camber/caster plates and bushing kits, allowing easy adjustment and a true “full four-wheel alignment” to be performed by any competent shop. These bushings make camber adjustments possible for the first time, and improve the ability to complete toe angle adjustments. When used in conjunction with the K-MAC Camber and Toe kit and Rear Adjustable Trailing Arms allows full adjustability of the 5 multi-link rear arms and positive location. Bolt-on installation – insertion/extraction tube included! Easily adjusted on the car with basic hand tools Unique failsafe locking hardware – set & forget! Alignments are made faster and simpler when using a set of aftermarket lower arms, enabling the alignment tech to easily reset toe after adjusting camber. The race toe link kit by Fall Line Motorsports is designed to facilitate rapid adjustments of toe during an alignment, and combined with the tension strut will also enable adjustment of overall track. Not only does this allow for fine tuning of wheel fitment, these arms will allow an alignment shop to make quick work of car setup, even simplifying the camber adjustment process as a result. The race toe links utilize a unique clamp-style fastener system as seen in BMW’s own tie rods and Porsche Motorsport components, tightening the adjustment arm in place with no stretch of the hardware or change of alignment. Less expensive jam-nut designs limit precision and nearly guarantee an alignment change when the jam-nut is tightened. Laser cut lockout washers correctly eliminate the original BMW adjustment, eliminating any unwanted movement in the system.

Rubber bushings found in the latest M Cars' rear camber arms are the last weak link in an otherwise rigid suspension. Fall-Line's new lower control arm subframe cup bearings yield a significant improvement over the factory bushings; as motorsport parts, both strength and longevity were priorities—to do just that, Fall-Line boasts the largest FK spherical bearings on the market—by eliminating rubber from a critical feedback area of the car, you gain control over the tire’s behavior and thereby confidence behind the wheel at the limit. To adequately cope with the competition-level load, Fall-Line bearings feature stainless steel spiral locks that offer 360 degrees of clamping force to secure the bearing from any potential movement.
