The A/C evaporator in your BMW is where the A/C refrigerant is evaporated from a liquid to a gas, absorbing heat in the process. It helps to transfer the cool air from the compressor to the cabin. Without the evaporator, the A/C system would not work at all. Since the evaporator is located inside of the vehicle in the climate control plenum, it is not very susceptible to damage. The evaporator will usually last many years. If your A/C evaporator does fail, it must be replaced in order to maintain the functionality of the A/C system.
