Control arms, and their integrated ball joints, are some of the most crucial components on a BMW suspension. The control arms literally control the wheel and suspension as they go through their range of motions. They do more than just keep the alignment in a constant spec - they are a vital locating component for the suspension itself. A faulty or worn control arm or ball joint is a very dangerous and potentially life-threatening problem so make sure they are inspected and replaced at regular intervals.

Most control arms for BMWs consist of an inner and outer ball joint made of plastic, rubber, Delrin, or metal and covered in grease with a rubber boot to seal it from the outside. The ball joint rotates and spins as the control arm goes through its movements and that will wear the ball joint and make it loose. The grease inside the housing can also get used up, evaporate, or become contaminated from moisture and foreign particles. As the ball joint becomes worn it can result in excess movement within the housing. Your steering and handling will become less precise and there is usually a light clunking or clicking sound. In rare and extreme cases the ball joint can separate from the control arm completely, leading to a total loss of suspension and steering control. You should have the ball joint play checked annually and replace them every 3-4 years. Most track organizations will not allow a car if they are older than three years.

Control arms also take abuse from impacts and handling forces. Aluminum control arms will generally bend and prevent an accurate alignment. Steel control arms will crack and fracture and require close inspection annually and replacement every 3-4 years.

We sell OE BMW, OEM, and performance upgrade control arms from proven manufacturers. The control arm is so important to a BMW suspension that we insist on only top quality brands and designs and will never sell a control arm based on price alone. We also have upgrade packages with superior designs and better bushing options and we have bundled these together with valuable package savings.

When you're chasing the perfect line or just looking for maximum feedback through the steering wheel, worn suspension components are your worst enemy. Factory front control arms are notorious for developing play in the inner bushings and ball joints, leading to a loose front end, dynamic alignment changes under braking, and a numb steering feel.

Constant exposure to road hazards such as potholes and speed bumps can significantly impact your suspension system over time. The non-serviceable ball joints in the control arms are particularly susceptible to wear after years of use, leading to a loose steering feel, wobbling, and clunking sounds during turns. To enhance safety and ride comfort, it's essential to replace worn components promptly.

When replacing parts in your front or rear suspension, it's advisable to either replace them in pairs (both left and right sides) or inspect components prone to failure. This approach maximizes the service life of replacement parts and ensures optimal performance across the suspension system.

The control arm ensures the lower wheel remains aligned and in contact with the road. If your vehicle has been in an accident or the bushings are starting to fail, replacement is the only solution. Opt for a replacement part identical to the original to maintain your vehicle's performance and reliability.

Over time, roads take a toll on your suspension, with potholes, speed bumps, and other hazards contributing to a weakened and less responsive system. Replacing worn components as needed is crucial for maintaining safety and ride comfort. One key component to address is the control arm. After extended use, the non-serviceable ball joints and other parts may wear out. Since these components cannot be replaced individually, the entire control arm must be replaced to restore optimal performance.

Within as few as 50,000 miles, the rear control arms on your vehicle can begin to creak, groan, and compromise stability on the road. Worn bushings in the control arms may fail to maintain proper alignment, causing your vehicle to "wander" at highway speeds due to excessive play. Replacing the control arm bushings is the only way to restore your vehicle’s original ride quality and handling performance.

The road can take a serious toll on your suspension. Pot holes, speed bumps, and road hazards all contribute to a sloppy and weak suspension. After years of service, the control arm's non-serviceable ball joints can begin to wear out, causing the steering to not feel as tight, as well as steering wobble and clunking when turning. To give a better feel to your driving experience, change components as they wear to improve safety and ride comfort.
