Installing a larger intercooler in your BMW can lower the temperatures of your charged air, giving you the opportunity to make more power. As forced induction BMWs become more popular, intercoolers will be a staple in terms of modifications.
BMW has a knack for maintaining its stake as the benchmark when it comes to performance luxury vehicles, with the F8X generation being no exception. The S55 that powers the 2015–2020 BMW F8X M3, M4 and M2 Competition is dripping with technology, which includes an air-to-water intercooler as a means of keeping cool. Where BMW’s intercooler design was enough to help bring this generation of mid-sized M’s to their peak, we here at Mishimoto found some weaknesses that we felt obliged to address. We started with the end tanks. The Mishimoto Performance Air-to-Water Intercooler features full, cast aluminum end tanks, TIG-welded to our bar-and-plate core for maximum durability as you increase the boost in your Bimmer. Our end tanks also include internal air diverters on both the inlet and outlet to ensure an even flow of charged air through the core. When it comes to the core, bigger is better, and we were able to expand the size of our core in all dimensions, resulting in a 29% increase in core volume while abstaining from any modifications when it comes to the installation. Our new core also features a unique single-pass internal fin layout for the coolant passage for optimal heat transfer from the charged air to the coolant. With our improvements combined, we saw the Mishimoto 2015–2020 BMW F8X M3 and M4 Performance Intercooler increase flow through the core by 16% and recorded a 12°F drop in intake air temperatures when tested with the Mishimoto Performance Heat Exchanger. We also recorded an average increase of 11 whp and 8 wtq during our testing with peak gains of up to 31 whp and 10 wtq. With the micro-wrinkle black finish and sleek header plate design, the Mishimoto Performance Air-to-Water Intercooler makes the perfect addition to your F8X build and looks right at home in the M’s engine bay. Like all of our products, the Mishimoto 2015–2020 BMW F8X M3, M4, and M2 Competition Performance Air-to-Water Intercooler is backed by the Mishimoto Lifetime Warranty for a lifetime of support for all of your performance needs. Features: Direct fit for the 2015–2020 BMW F8X M3, M4, and M2 Competition 29% increase in core volume 16% increase in flow Average power gains of 11 whp and 8 wtq when combined with Mishimoto Heat Exchanger 12°F drop in intake air temperatures with Mishimoto Heat Exchanger Unique single-pass core design for improved cooling capacity Cast aluminum end tanks with incorporated diverters for maximum flow Bar-and-plate core for maximum cooling efficiency Micro-wrinkle black powder-coated finish for sleek aesthetic in the engine bay Compatible with stock and Mishimoto charge pipes Mishimoto Lifetime Warranty Includes: (1) Performance Intercooler Mounting Hardware Mishimoto Lifetime Warranty WARNING! Improve the cooling capacity for your 2015–2020 BMW M3 or M4 with the Mishimoto Performance Heat Exchanger. Air-to-water intercooling is a means of more efficient heat transfer from the charged air, but it now requires an additional heat exchanger mounted to the front of the vehicle in order to dissipate the transferred heat. The S55 powering the F8X generation of M’s packs quite a punch thanks to the A2W system. While the BMW engineers laid the foundation for dissipating heat from the intercooling system, we still saw some room to improve on their design. We started by eliminating any bits of plastic and promptly replaced the end tanks, including the inlet and outlet ports, with durable aluminum. We kept the dual-pass flow through the core for maximum cooling properties while expanding the core into the available space. Our new design features a 42mm thick core while extending the height by 150 mm, totaling in a 60% increase in core volume and a 180% increase in fin surface area. The end result of our improvements is a 10°F drop in global intercooling temperatures over the stock unit. Size isn’t the only thing that matters with this heat exchanger. Since the heat exchanger sits front and center in the M3 and M4’s cooling stack, it’s susceptible to damage from road debris. To keep your air-to-water system safe, our heat exchanger comes equipped with an optional steel mesh stone guard for an added layer of protection for the fins. We also incorporated a variable fin pitch for the lower 12 rows on the core in order to facilitate cooling to DCT-equipped M's. Finally, our 2015–2020 BMW F8X M3/M4 Performance Heat Exchanger includes the Mishimoto Lifetime Warranty for a worry-free install. Features: Direct fit for the 2015–2020 BMW M3, M4, and M2 Competition 10°F drop in global intercooler coolant temperatures over stock 60% increase in core volume 180% increase in external fin surface area Increases intercooler coolant capacity by 0.6 gallons Full aluminum, TIG-welded construction Dual-pass design for maximum cooling Variable fin-pitch design for improved airflow to DCT cooler Includes optional stone guard for maximum protection against road debris Mishimoto Lifetime Warranty Included: (1) Performance Heat Exchanger (1) Stone Guard (1) Magnetic Drain Plug Mounting Hardware Mishimoto Lifetime Warranty WARNING! The Mishimoto Performance Intercooler focuses on reducing induction tract restriction while improving the mechanical reliability of the cooling system.
Allows for more aggressive ignition timing and more consistent power delivery, making it an essential upgrade for both stock and stage-1 tuned vehicles.
BMW's S55 motor is a modern marvel but one weak point, which Active identified is the entire cooling system for the intake which comprises the charge pipe, the aftercooler and the heat exchanger (or radiator). Finally there is a S55 aftercooler kit upgrade that is good enough to carry the Active Autowerke brand. Years of success in developing cars for motorsport has allowed Active to leverage its expertise to the top-mount charge air cooler on the F80 M3, F82 M4 and F87 M2 Competition. This aftercooler was made for the S55 and crafted using only high-grade aluminum to outperform the factory aftercooler in all situations from everyday driving to the toughest racing. The factory cooler was built to support a specific power target and environment. Many of you have increased the performance of the S55 which quickly overwhelms the stock cooler leading to heat soak and higher intake air temperatures which triggers the ECU to downgrade the performance until cooler air returns. Active's focus was not on a mass-market aesthetic add-on but a properly engineered improvement over the existing hardware. Active uses a tube-and-fin core designed specifically for the S55 and included turbulators to maximize the cooling efficiency in as small a package as possible. The end tanks are billet machined aluminum, not cast, folded, or bonded and ensure even distribution of the water throughout the internal aftercooler cores. High precision fittings, CNC machining, and TIG welding throughout ensures the highest quality construction to prevent pressure loss, and the lowest weight, in a bolt-on replacement. But Active also didn’t leave the aesthetics by the wayside as we dip the visible top of the aftercooler in a carbon fiber coating giving your installed cooling system a decidedly top market look to match the improved cooling performance. The Active silicone charge pipes for the F80 M3, F82/F83 M4 and the F87 M2 Competition improve the flow over the stock, compressed plastic pipes. The Active Silicone Charge Pipes allow you to maximize power on your F8X by securing all the boost that your S55 is making. These pipes replace the hot-side pipes leaving the turbos and into the top-mount aftercooler. The stock S55 charge pipes are notorious for developing hairline fractures at their plastic seams. These fractures or cracks are unnoticeable to the naked eye, but under boost pressure they open up leaking the desired charged air into the engine bay, and consequently can rob your S55 of it's full power potential. In addition, these leaks can trigger your S55's turbochargers to work harder to hit and maintain target boost pressure, potentially wearing them out sooner. Active uses silicone in this area because it will not contribute to heat soak and it's easier to mold for the correct clearances. Active uses a 5-layer silicone hose with all needed adapters and stainless hose clamps included. It fits perfectly with our CNC’d top-mount cooler.
