BMW makes their cylinder heads from aluminum. While this is beneficial for many reason, they do not react well to overheating. Especially prevalent on older BMW engines, and over-temp situation has been known to cause the head to warp. Cylinder head bolts feature a torque-to-yield design, meaning that they can only be used once. If you have to pull your cylinder head for any reason, be sure to pick up a set of cylinder head bolts to ensure your head is properly attached to the engine block.
