This is the high quality Pierburg electric water pump for F30 F32 F22 models with the N55 6 cylinder turbo engine. The electric water pumps on older N54 and N55 engines tended to be failure prone. The N55 water pump is electrically driven and varies output based on instructions from the engine computer. Under the best circumstances the pump drives only as much coolant as needed and will shut down or activate as load and performance demands change (combustion chamber temperatures are dynamically changed based on economy, normal, and performance demands). The pump can also run when the car is off to reduce heat soak in the engine and turbo(s). The water pump is now a factor in how much power and fuel economy your car is producing, making it all the more critical to replace during normal maintenance. If a fault or excessive temperature is reached, the dash cluster will display a yellow or red water temp icon depending on the severity of the condition. The car's electronics will begin shutting down various systems in the car to divert more resources to the cooling system. This can include reducing power output and activating 'limp mode'. The best way to avoid problems and system failures? Preventative maintenance and overhaul of the cooling system, starting with the water pump (and thermostat). These aluminum water pump screws are single use and must be replaced each time they are removed. These are used on all 325i, 328i, and 330i with the BMW N51 N52 and N53 engines. They were also used on some early N54 engines that have rubber mounts on the water pump housing. Do not use these bolts if your N54 water pump has been replaced with a housing that does not have the rubber mounts.

This is the coolant return pipe on the back of the water pump on the N62 and N73 engines used in the E53 X5, E60 545/550, E63 645/650, E65 745/750, E70 X5, and F02 750. This pipe connects the water pump to the valley pan and it's a compression fitting (no o-rings). Whenever the water pump or valley pan are replaced this tube should also be replaced. This is one area where you don't want to go back and re-do your work because of a leaking fitting! In German, Rein means Pure.
