Replace the Achilles heel of your factory cooling system with a stout and reliable mechanical thermostat setup.

The factory E46 thermostat housing is a combined unit featuring a plastic housing and a built in thermostat that you cannot replace separately. These plastic all-in-one units are commonly know to crack or fail causing a headache, a trip on the tow truck and possible damage to your engine.

Taking cues from the reliable M50 thermostat setup we designed a an assembly that not only converts your plastic housing into a billet aluminum unit but also swaps out the integrated thermostat for a separate replaceable thermostat. The ability to swap out thermostats separately from the whole housing opens up doors to changing thermostats to different temperature ratings based on your application while also providing lower maintenance costs. No longer do you have to replace the whole housing but just the thermostat itself.

The billet housing is designed to be utilized with E46 M3 upper and lower radiator hoses and also features -16 ORB connections for custom radiator hoses. A major upgrade from the factory and aftermarket plastic units. Our thermostat housing kit can be used by the savvy daily driver or the track hero who wants to ensure the durability of their cooling system.

Key benefits:

Uses M50/S50 mechanical thermostat for increased reliability
Option to use aftermarket colder thermostats if desired
Thermostat can be replaced separately for lower maintenance cost
Barbed hose connections for use with E46 M3 hoses or built in -16 ORB connections for custom radiator hoses
Design:

Machined out of a single piece of billet 6061 aluminum, this thermostat housing will withstand higher prolonged temperatures and abuse for performance applications
Black anodized with engraved Turner logo on the front to match the Turner Motorsports Power Steering Reservoir
Viton gasket for superior sealing performance
For use with E46 M3 radiator hoses 11537830715 and 11537830716
Kit contents:

6061 Billet Aluminum Thermostat Housing
Mechanical Thermostat

Some of the biggest issues when owning a BMW can come from cooling system components. Even through years of improvement, the same failure is seen with the plastic fittings and adapters from years of hot to cold temperature fluctuation. The N52/N54/N55/N20 engine sees failure at the plastic cylinder head outlet adapter connecting the cylinder head to the thermostat hose. The stock plastic adapter simply shears off at the end of the barbed fitting, creating a massive coolant leak. The engineering team at ECS Tuning decided a billet aluminum piece was a much better option to contend with the temperature fluctuation. Since other offerings on the market want you to modify your OE hose to be reused, they even developed a silicone replacement hose. These 2 pieces can be purchased separately if you decide to reuse your existing OE hose or in a package kit together for a single click upgrade. Features: Manufactured from billet 6061-T6 with type III anodized for exceptional durability and corrosion resistance. Much stronger part than OEM plastic Will not become brittle and fatigued over time due to thermal cycling. This will prevent the part from breaking during removal and re-installation. Follows OEM form for perfect fitment. Utilizes (and includes) OEM O-ring 11537545278 to ensure a proper seal. Recommended clamp size is 25-40mm

**** DOES NOT INCLUDE HARDWARE ****** The S55 engine is no stranger to oil cooling problems, that’s why we recommend installing the MSL Oil Thermostat. The standard oil thermostat will reach around 120 degrees Celsius with a normal driving style. The MSL Oil Thermostat will open at a lower temperature than the standard oil thermostat (at 85 degrees Celsius) and will keep the temperature stable between 95 and 105 degrees Celsius. It is recommended to install the thermostat, especially for cars that are tuned. The Thermostat is plug-and-play and made out of a solid block of high-grade aluminum at our own facility. It is equipped with a real thermostat, not an always open solution. When it comes to cooling system hose replacement, the "U" shaped hose connecting the water pump to the thermostat is usually the first to fail. A lot of this comes from its close proximity to the hot downpipes, while some of this failure comes from the sharp bends in the hose.

Why not upgrade when you're due for a replacement? The ECS Tuning silicone hose replacement fixes these issue with two key features in their design. Offering this hose in a much more heat resistant silicone instead of OE rubber and having the hose wrapped in aluminum. The aluminum coating acts as a heat shield to further protect the silicone as well as reducing the temperatures forced on the coolant running through the hose.

The thermostat regulates the temperature of your coolant. At a predetermined temperature the thermostat will open to let coolant flow to the radiator and be cooled by airflow or the fan. Over time the thermostat will become stuck open or closed, leading to a variety of issues. A closed thermostat will never allow the coolant to reach the radiator and be cooled. Hot coolant will continue to circulate through the engine and absorb even more heat until boiling and the system overheats. An open thermostat is not as bad but is still not ideal - the coolant is always cool, with the temp needle always reading in the cool range. This tells the ECU to richen the fuel mixture to bring the car up to normal operating temp. So your fuel mileage decreases and the car runs rich.

Replacing the thermostat is an easy but messy job. This thermostat includes the main o-ring (but a housing gasket may be required). Consider replacing the housing and any associated temp sensors while you're in there. The cooling system will need to be bled after.

Most of the engines from the mid-1980s through the 1990s use the same thermostat design and they are interchangeable among the different temperatures. This is the 68*C thermostat, at the bottom of the temperature range. It should only be used in racing situations such as when deleting the engine fan. However, keep in mind that BMW spent a lot of time engineering the cooling system to work in all kinds of conditions and changing thermostat temperature is not recommended to fix any failures in the cooling system.

Mishimoto makes coolant tanks, radiators and much more for your Mini/BMW. Established in 2003 their commitment to absolute quality in the aftermarket world is evident through the quality and performance enhancing products they offer.

Plastic thermostat housing cracked on your M50?

Here are your choices: you can wait for the plastic factory thermostat housing cover to break and cause major overheating. (Even with a new stock cover, it won’t take long.) Or you can install a thoughtfully engineered all-aluminum thermostat housing cover from Active Autowerke and never experience this type of failure again. Currently there is no factory upgraded part to this problem. This is an aluminum extruded part that has all of the openings machine properly to fit like factory; from the mounting bolt holes, the seating of the thermostat to the sealing opening for the ORANGE gasket. Forged to exact factory tolerances, everything fits and this unit is a true easy bolt-on – especially suited for racing or load conditions like heavy traffic, where engine temp can rise rapidly. The housing is guaranteed never to break from overheating or over-tightening, and its CNC machined surface ensures a precise seat.

Unit comes complete with a new ORANGE sealing gasket; a new thermostat is recommended but not included.
For hotter climates, a 71 degree thermostat is recommended over the 82 degree unit.

Anything and everything BMW is the mantra at Active Autowerke. Since 1981 they have been serving the BMW community with custom turbocharger kits to a myriad of other innovative and inspiring performance parts.

Since 2010, Advanced Auto Fabrication has been producing and developing both parts and full fledged race cars. Their knowledge base covers a wide range of vehicles both domestic and imported. In the specific case of BMW, the team at AAF has a particular affinity for building and designing components for BMW race cars. The factory M54 thermostat is electronically controlled to keep the engine running between 80-103°C, whereas race cars like to maintain 80°C or less for maximum power. Additionally, the mechanical failsafe doesn’t open up until the coolant temperature reaches 110°C, or 230°F, which is about the point when most race cars are turned off and parked which is no good for the motor! The AAF E46 M54 Low Temp Thermostat Kit is designed to give the control of proper engine operating temperature back by replacing the stock electronic thermostat with a manual unit. This allows the engine to run at the proper, and much safer, operating temperature, improving engine longevity, reduces stress from high-temp. operation, reduces heat soak, and increases power! This is a genuine BMW Motorsport part, designed specifically for BMW racing applications. We use this exact thermostat setup in our Championship-winning E46 330i race car. It is designed to be used on all M54 and M52TU double-VAN0S engines, as used in the 1999-2000 E46 323/328 and 2001-2005 E46 325/330. This 60 degree C (140 defrees F) thermostat comes complete with plastic thermostat housing. It does not use the plug and wiring for the stock DME so this should only be used with an aftermarket engine management system (Motec, Bosch, etc).

When doing any sort of repair or maintenance there is no replacement for genuine factory parts. Turner Motorsport carries the Genuine BMW brand with pride and has the parts you need to complete your next project with confidence.

Have you ever noticed how crisp and responsive your MINI was after that initial warm-up period, and wanted to keep that feeling for the rest of the day? This 180° F Thermostat is the solution. Not only does the engine maintain its fresh-start power, but also the under-hood temperatures are greatly diminished (see comparison table below). Now when your car sits after a hard run it won't cook and dry out everything under the hood as bad as it did in the stock configuration. This is great for the MINI owner that lives in a hot climate, or those that push their cars hard at the track or local twisty road.

Please Note: This thermostat does not include a replacement gasket. Reuse the gasket from the OEM thermostat.

Cold Weather Alert: If you encounter weather below 50º F or 10º C, please be aware that the ECU could throw a “check engine” light. This is no cause for alarm as the sensors are registering an anomaly and the thermostat is not harming the engine. The “check engine” light can be reset with a diagnostic tool or left as is. Please call if you have questions.

Installing the MSL thermostat ensures a cooler oil temperature which will result in more stable performance, but above all this improves the reliability of the engine. It is recommended to install the thermostat, especially for cars that are tuned.
