Want to install a downpipe on your B58 equipped BMW, but still need to pass emissions? Evolution Racewerks has the answer for you with their B58 Catted downpipe. The Evolution Racewerks Competition Series Catless Downpipes is constructed from 304 stainless steel, featuring mandrel bent piping.  These are 100% TIG welded by in house fabricators and built in the USA! 

The factory turbocharger turbine housing utilizes a V-Band flange which has been duplicated and CNC machined cut out of billet 304 stainless steel. Stainless Steel CNC machined O2 sensor and laser cut brackets are TIG welded using stainless steel rods. The O2 sensor remains positioned at the factory location. Also, since Evolution Racewerks uses a larger 4.5" pipe right after the turbocharger, turbo backpressure is significantly reduced, resulting in less exhaust turbulence and backpressure which again improves throttle response and decreasing turbo lag.

Thus, removing as many exhaust flow restrictions as possible will increase horsepower and torque significantly. The factory catalytic converter found in the factory downpipe is a big culprit of this and is a major exhaust flow restriction. Evolution Racewerks use a 200 cell metallic core for their Sports Series High Flow Catted Downpipes. By having fewer cells per square inch, these individual "cells" are bigger in size thus allowing exhaust gas to pass through them more easily. Therefore, the lower the cell count, the higher the flow. Higher flow = more power, faster turbo spool up (less turbocharger lag) and better throttle response. Bottom line, faster. The benefits of a metallic catalytic converter vs a ceramic, like the factory, is that it can take higher temperatures and is more durable (last longer). They are also lighter than their ceramic counterparts. The Evolution Racewerks catted downpipe is constructed out of grade 304 stainless steel and utilizes mandrel bent 3" piping. On a turbocharged vehicle, any restriction in the exhaust system reduces peak horsepower. By removing the factory catalytic converter, most of this restriction is removed gaining advantages in more than just peak horsepower. The factory downpipe, while excellent for maintaining strict emission regulations, does nothing to unlock the performance of a turbocharged engine. Due to an internal honeycomb structure that the exhaust gasses must pass through, flow is massively reduced. Additionally, this honeycomb causes turbulence after the converter which slows exhaust flow even further and causes more restriction. If you've ever tried to blow through a coffee straw, you know how your car feels. This not only limits how fast the turbo can spool or come up to speed but also how much air it can move in general. When the internal honeycomb structure is removed in favor of a straight and hollow piece, these issues are alleviated. Not only can the turbocharger come up to max rpm faster, is does this more efficiently and with less work since there is no back-pressure against the turbine wheel. Turbo lag becomes a thing of the past and because of this, the powerband shifts and massive top-end gains can be felt. Constructed out of 100% 304-grade stainless steel and fully mandrel bent, you can be sure that as much time has been put into construction as development.
