Upper shock mounts and bearings are good to replace while replacing front shocks. It is easier and often less expensive to replace them preventatively than to have them fail shortly afterward and have to take apart the whole suspension a second time. This front shock tower bearing fits BMW E39 540i M5 and Z8.

It's also a good idea to replace the upper spring plate and bearing at the same time. Often, these bearings are worn out and should not be put back in the car. See below for the link to add these to order too.

The strut mounts (or guide support) locate the front strut to the chassis of the car. They are a very durable rubber meant to absorb vibration and impacts from bumps, potholes, etc. There is also a bearing inside that allows the strut shaft to turn independent of the rest of the suspension. Therefore, the front strut mount is a very critical piece on the E36 suspension. These mounts generally last 100,000 miles or more but it would be a good idea to change them with every strut replacement. Alternate part number - 31336779613 .

Struts at steering wheels commonly include a pivot bearing to allow the strut to pivot left and right. To ensure smooth steering and proper impact damping, replace old mounts and pivot bearings whenever new struts are installed. Old, worn, and heat-hardened mount rubber transmits vibration to the chassis and can break or tear, affecting steering and causing noise over bumps.

This Genuine BMW upper strut mount is "offset" and adds more negative camber (or removes camber if installed in reverse) to the front of your E30, E24, or E28. These are a must for any track/autocross-driven BMW because they decrease understeer!
