Oil Separation & Breather System

Every car has a crankcase vent system that is supposed to suppress oil from making it into the intake ports and combustion chamber. A good functioning system will separate oil from the atmosphere and return it to the oil pan (or collect it in a catch can) while allowing the leftover vapors to burn in the combustion chamber or recirculate through the system. This has always been known as a PCV system (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) but BMW has several other names for it - oil separator, crankcase vent (CCV), and cyclonic separator. Failures in the system will allow raw oil to enter the intake and eventually into the engine itself which can have disastrous effects on engine performance and longevity. As emissions regulations on oil and gas venting have gotten more stringent the PCV systems have gotten more complex and failure prone. And because the CCV is intertwined with other systems you could experience rough running, loss of power, higher oil consumption, misfiring, stalling, or other annoying issues. There is no replacement interval for these so we recommend inspecting your crankcase vent system as part of your regular maintenance routines. Symptoms of a bad crankcase vent are: whitish or yellowish film on the underside of the oil cap, whistling/squealing noises (not caused by a belt), suction on the oil cap that makes it hard to unscrew, large amounts of white smoke from the exhaust, and excessive oil consumption.

It's no secret that the B58 BMW turbo motors can suffer from oil control problems causing the oil to blow through and coat the intercooler and charge piping, gunking up intake valves and the VANOS system, lowering the effective octane, and generally degrading engine performance. The higher your boost levels the more apparent these problems become. The solution to this problem has finally arrived. The BMS oil catch can. While there are other catch cans on the market they all fall short in various areas. Some are mounted on the hot/turbo side of the motor preventing proper vapor condensation. Others utilize hoses that are too small and runs that are too long to allow proper PCV ventilation causing internal motor/ring sealing issues. Some have insufficient or no internal baffle system while others have internal baffles systems that are too restrictive. Some even bypass the PCV system all together venting crankcase gas and odor to the atmosphere. Most are simply repackaged oil catch cans from smaller/lower power motors shoehorned into place in the turbo BMW engine bay. To solve these problems Burger Motorsports designed their oil catch can kit from the ground up specifically for the B58 turbo BMW application. It features 100% CNC machining with zero welding for a precision fit and long life. The can itself is guaranteed for the life of the vehicle. The hoses exceed the OEM PCV piping in diameter and that flow rate is maintained throughout the entire oil catch can ensuring no excessive crankcase pressure buildup. The BMS OCC retains the factory fully closed loop PCV operation preventing any PCV vapor from leaking to atmosphere. The mounting locations are selected to minimize the line length, allow more efficient operation, and retain a stealth look. Install takes around 20 minutes, includes all required hardware, and is 100% reversible. Simply unscrew the base of the can or use the drain plug to safely dispose of captured oil with the rest of your used motor oil during oil changes. Made in the USA. KIT INCLUDES (1) BMS N54 Oil Catch Can (1) Billet B58 bracket (1) 90º billet fitting/nipple (1) Custom Silicone inlet hose (1) 3.5" Straight hose (2) Stainless steel bracket screws #10-32 x 1/2" internal hex socket head Includes BMS intake silencer delete for installation with factory intake.

An integral part of the emissions system, the PVC valve lets the crank case breathe. This allows proper intake and exhaust flow, resulting in proper running and operation. Often split from underhood heat and age, this vents excess oil into the engine compartment. Replace it now.

BMW vehicles are prone to oil separators freezing in cold weather if driven before the engine is fully warmed up. This can lead to a howling noise followed by multiple oil leaks. The crankcase breather valve vents oil vapor from the engine block to the valve cover, but condensation can sometimes cause it to freeze, leading to a failure of the entire oil separator system, causing it to crack and break down. To prevent damage to your engine, it’s best to replace all components of the oil separator system at once. Replacing everything ensures reliable performance and durability. Remember to also order a valve cover gasket to make the replacement process easier.
