The gasket fails and allows oil to seep down onto the side of the engine and other parts causing a mess and reducing the amount of oil in your engine. The N54 valve cover, while not a terrible design, has it's share of flaws. Most owners have had to replace this part over time as it can crack for seemingly no reason. Additionally, the stock valve cover has its limitations for vacuum and PCV connectivity.
