This is the main rear upper control arm (or wishbone) for the E39 5-series. It helps to locate the wheel hub and keep the alignment in check. It has an inner rubber bushing and outer ball joint. When these wear out the rear suspension becomes less stable and 'planted' than before. You may also notice a clunking noise when going over bumps.
