This can cause excess wear, high transmission operating temperatures, and eventual failure. If you have to drop or pull your transmission for any reason, the input shaft is one of the best "while it's out" maintenance items you can replace. Worn out input shaft seals can allow transmission fluid to leak out, possibly shortening its life if the fluid level gets too low. This repair kit includes the basic component needed to replace this seal.

BMW claims their transmission fluid to be a "lifetime" fluid, however is recommended to be changed every 60,000 miles to ensure a longer transmission life. Though not exposed to the same level of heat and contamination as engine oil, transmission oil still breaks down over time due to heat and becomes contaminated as your transmission wears. Old contaminated oil can lead to excessive wear and tear on sensitive transmission components which could lead to slow shifting, slips, and even complete failure. This is also true for the transmission filter integrated into the transmission fluid pan.
