The oil filter housing is pretty self explanitory; It holds the oil filter assembly. Not only does this provide a small amount of cooling but it makes the filter much easier to service.
A common issue with multiple BMW engines is a leaky oil filter housing. Over time, gaskets become dry and brittle allowing oil to leak into your engine compartment. Replace these gaskets and stop having to top off your oil every month!
