If you have to drop or pull your transmission for any reason, the input shaft is one of the best "while it's out" maintenance items you can replace. Worn out input shaft seals can allow transmission fluid to leak out, possibly shortening its life if the fluid level gets too low. This OEM BMW replacement flex disc (aka: the guibo) is a vibration dampener mounted on the back of the transmission which connects to the driveshaft. When it has worn, it produces a terrible vibration throughout the car. It's especially noticeable at low speeds and when starting from a standstill. Oil leaking from the back of the transmission will significantly reduce its life.

Though not exposed to the same level of heat and contamination as engine oil, transmission oil still breaks down over time due to heat and becomes contaminated as your transmission wears. Old contaminated oil can lead to excessive wear and tear on sensitive transmission components which could lead to slow shifting, slips, and even complete failure.
