BMW automatic transmissions require a regular filter and fluid change. While BMW has recently implemented 'Lifetime' fluid on most current models, we feel that it is critical to change the transmission filter and flush the fluid at least every 50,000 miles. Transmission fluid is responsible for both cooling and lubricating sensitive transmission components. Over time, this fluid becomes contaminated by particulate from clutch and gear components wearing down. This contamination reduces the fluid's ability to act as a lubricant, eventually leading to increased wear and tear within the transmission. To prevent excess wear and keep your transmission in top shape, the fluid and filter should be replaced regularly. As per ZF's recommendations, we suggest performing a full service on your 8HP automatic transmission every 50,000 miles. If your vehicle has been modified to produce more power than stock or if it is regularly track-driven, we recommend shorter 30,000-mile service intervals. This will ensure your transmission's fluid is free from contamination, which will help extend the life of internal transmission components, such as clutch packs and solenoids.
