BMW makes their cylinder heads from aluminum. While this is beneficial for many reason, they do not react well to overheating. Cylinder head bolts need to be replaced after removal. Once a bolt is torqued down, you're unable to reuse it. Cylinder head bolts feature a torque-to-yield design, meaning that they can only be used once. If you have to pull your cylinder head for any reason, be sure to pick up a set of cylinder head bolts to ensure your head is properly attached to the engine block.
