The valve cover is responsible for sealing the internal workings of the engines' top end. Most vehicles require a replacement gasket at some point or another and newer models have plastic valve covers that get brittle and crack with age.
Issues with a valve cover such as cracks and warping can result in a major vacuum leak and result in very poor performance.
