BMW Cooling System Parts & Accessories for BMW Z3 (1996-2002)

Please ensure your correct model is selected

The cooling system is arguably the weakest point in numerous BMWs. If you drive an aging BMW or plan on taking your car to the track like we do, we recommend beefing up your cooling system before going to the track. Generally, the main components in your cooling system that are prone to failure include the following: expansion tank, factory hoses, water pump, thermostat, fan (especially if your vehicle comes factory with a clutch fan), and radiator. Factory BMW expansion tanks are plastic and prone to either breaking off at connection points or combusting. As factory rubber hoses age they either crack or break over time - we offer silicone cooling hose upgrades for most applications to avoid future failures. If you have an older vehicle, your water pump likely comes from the factory with a plastic impeller - we offer upgraded water pumps with metal impellers that are far more reliable. Newer model BMWs utilize electric water pumps - BMW spent millions of dollars engineering these water pumps, but they fail so often that we recommend replacing at 60,000 mile service intervals to avoid being stranded on the side of the road. In terms of thermostats, we offer various upgraded thermostats for racing applications. If your BMW utilizes a clutch fan from the factory, we have several options available in terms of universal electric fans - we recommend replacing these to avoid sending brittle plastic fan blades through your hood. For radiators, we recommend swapping out your radiator for one that does not use plastic connection points like your factory radiator.

BMW vehicles are known for their robust performance, but the water pump is a notorious weak spot, often needing replacement every 60,000 miles.

During this service, it's wise to also swap out the thermostat to maintain the efficiency of your vehicle's cooling system. Turner Motorsport simplifies this process with our expertly curated Water Pump & Thermostat Replacement Kit.

This premium kit centers around the renowned EMP Stewart high-performance water pump--a favorite among BMW enthusiasts for its exceptional design. Featuring a stainless steel impeller, this pump enhances coolant flow by 20%. Complementing this is a low-temperature 68°C (154.4°F) Mishimoto thermostat, an upgraded aluminum thermostat housing, and Redline Water Wetter coolant additive. Together, these components make for the ultimate cooling system upgrade for your E36, E39, or Z3!

This high quality BEHR brand expansion tank is used on M50, M52, S50 and S52 engines, and is a common failure item on all E36 3 series with 6 cylinder engines (325/328/323 and M3) 1992-1999, Z3 with 2.8 liter, MZ3 Roadster/Coupe (S52), and E39 528i from 1997-1998. BEHR was the original equipment supplier to BMW, so you know the BEHR made expansion tank will be the highest quality available. Be leary of competitors selling this part for less -- is it a BEHR? Probably not. We only carry the BEHR brand expansion tank as it is the only one we use in our own BMWs.

If you are overhauling your coolant system, now is the time to consider preventative replacing this expansion tank. These are known to go bad, causing a leak which can leave you stranded. We have found that the expansion tanks should be replaced based on age as well as condition. Expansion tanks seem to have a lifespan of less than six years before they show signs of fatigue and wear. Pre-emptively replacing the expansion tank as part of an overall maintenance plan can prevent you from getting stranded from a sudden failure later on.

Need a new coolant level sensor too? If your coolant level sender is bad, your on board computer will constantly display a "low coolant" message (unless your coolant is actually low...). If you're replacing your expansion tank, now is a great time to replace this failure prone sensor. If you want a new coolant level sensor, simply choose from the option below. Because there are different sensors for different year/model BMWs, please be as specific as possible when you give us your car info during checkout (model, year, production date). Thanks!

Just like the rest of your vehicle's major systems, the cooling system must also be addressed periodically to ensure proper cooling and component reliability. Plastic and rubber components become brittle and prone to splitting or cracking after long periods of heating and cooling cycles, especially in colder climates! The coolant itself can degrade or become contaminated, leading to potential corrosion or freezing issues. Finally, thermostats and sensors can fail completely, preventing proper cooling and/or coolant temperature readings to become inaccurate.

To make sure you are not left stranded on the side of the road with an overheated engine, we have put together this Basic Cooling System Service kit. This kit contains all of the most-likely-to-fail components, giving you peace of mind knowing your engine will continue to run cool for another 60,000+ miles.

See kit contents below for all included components.

It is important that your coolant system is serviced at regular intervals to ensure a long life. Over time, coolant systems are exposed to high temperatures and repeated thermal cycling, which causes warping, cracking, and hardening of plastics and rubber components in the coolant system. This can lead to coolant leaks and overheating, which can result in extensive engine damage if not resolved in a timely manner. This Water Pump & Thermostat kit helps to address a few of the most problematic parts, replacing these items entirely to keep your cooling system running optimally and efficiently.

Ensure the optimal performance of your BMW by addressing the crucial component of the water pump. Turner Motorsport provides high-quality water pumps designed to keep coolant flowing smoothly. If left unchecked, a failing water pump can lead to overheating issues, potentially causing damage to engine internals. Common among German vehicles, water pump failure may result in unnecessary visits to the repair shop. Preventive maintenance, especially during timing belt replacements, is essential to avoid rapid coolant temperature rise and potential engine damage.

  • Prevents overheating issues
  • Guards against engine damage
  • Common replacement during timing belt maintenance
  • Ensures smooth coolant flow for optimal engine performance
  • Options for thermostats available on Turner Motorsport's website
  • Convenient coolant replacement options
  • Recommended replacement around 60,000 miles

This fan is driven by the belt, engaged by the fan clutch. If you have bad motor mounts, it's quite common for the blades of this fan to make contact with the radiator or radiator shroud, essentially self-destructing the fan into many peices. Be sure to get a new fan clutch, while you are replacing this.

This is the coolant temperature sensor used in many BMW models from the mid-1990s to the mid-2000s. The engine computer relies on the coolant temp to set the fuel mapping for the engine. As the car warms up the computer changes the fuel mixture. If your car is running a bit rich (too much fuel) it could be because this sensor is failing and not sending the correct info to the computer.

This sensor is located in a variety of places depending on the engine. But it's one of those easy replacement items 'while you're in there' when doing a water pump or thermostat replacement.

This coolant temp sensor fits the following BMWs:
1996-1999 E36 BMW 323is 323ic 328i 328is 328ic M3, located in cylinder head
1999-2003 E39 BMW 540i, located on side of water pump
1999-2001 E38 BMW 740i 740il, located on side of water pump
1995-1996 E38 BMW 750il, located on side of water pump
1990-1999 E31 BMW 850i 850ci, located on side of water pump
2000-2006 E53 BMW X5 3.0i, located in cylinder head
2000-2006 E53 BMW X5 4.4i/4.6is/4.8is, located on side of water pump
