For dozens of years, enthusiasts have critiqued the imprecise and vague feeling of BMW manual transmissions. Plagued with long throws, fore and aft play in gear, and a generally loose feeling, your OEM BMW shifter leaves much to be desired. While most standard carrier-mount short throw shifter kits will aid in reducing throw length and eliminating side-to-side play in gear, some enthusiasts long for a hardcore, race-inspired shifter that completely removes play and excessive throw length. At Turner Motorsport we share the same desire and set out to offer the ULTIMATE upgrade with this Performance Chassis Mount Short Shifter.

WHY UPGRADE?

Factory BMW shifter assemblies are complex by nature. The main component of this assembly is the shift carrier, a cast aluminum piece positioned inside the transmission tunnel that incorporates bushings at both ends for mounting. Like most factory parts, these bushings are designed to reduce NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) transmission to the cabin. To the spirited driver, however, these bushings translate to flex and vagueness in the shift lever. Moreover, because this carrier is mounted to both the transmission and the body, the entire shifter assembly will "float" with the driveline, further increasing the vague and imprecise feeling of your shifter.

Our Performance Chassis Mount Short Shifter removes the shift carrier assembly entirely—removing any prospect of flex caused by bushings or driveline movement. By contrast, this chassis mount shifter offers a drastic reduction in shift lever travel, vagueness, and side-to-side play. An elevated base allows for moving the fulcrum point upwards, resulting in a much shorter and more precise throw. Shift times are further reduced by a tall, "rally style" shift lever, used to aid in leverage while also bringing the lever closer to the steering wheel. Our design incorporates a proprietary centering spring design, which is adjustable for increasing or decreasing self-centering force. In short, this design eliminates all the drawbacks of your factory BMW shifter, translating to more control, greater precision, shorter throws, and faster shift times.

TURNER MOTORSPORT DOUBLE ADJUSTABLE SHORT SHIFT KIT

BMWs have historically been plagued by very long throw shifters from the factory - luckily, we've developed the solution. Our short shifter system is height- and throw-adjustable, offering up to a 52% reduction in throw over stock. Double adjustability enables you to find the sweet spot that will make you excited to drive your car again. Installation of this kit is also of the easiest to tackle. Compared to the competition, a custom bearing cup allows for easy installation from inside the car (on applications that use the stock shifter arm).

Like all OEM selector rods, the factory part uses single-shear attachment, allowing for deflection within the shifter linkage. The result? Vague, imprecise gear selections that detract from your overall driving experience. The dual-shear selector rod (DSSR) design spreads the torsional force of gear selections across the selector rod joint, reducing deflection for increased precision. Our DSSR is precision-machined from durable 304 stainless steel to further reduce deflection and resist corrosion.

To cater to the six-speed swap E36 community, we designed a direct replacement and upgrade for the unavailable, 420G-specific shifter arm. Precision-machined from 6061-T6 billet aluminum and clear anodized, this replacement carrier is durable, lightweight, and built to last. It is dimensionally identical to the OEM carrier, ensuring compatibility with the OEM shift carrier bushing, shift lever, and Turner Motorsport Double-Adjustable Short Throw Shifter Kit.

This shifter bushing is designed to remove the shifter play caused by an old, failed rubber shifter bushing. Manufacturing the bushing from polyurethane instead of rubber reduces the amount of stretch caused by the moving part through the bushing. This maintains the direct crisp feel from your shifter assembly. When your OE shifter arm bushing begins to fail, you will notice slop in shifting, potentially making it easier to miss gears, and it often causes an obvious vibration and movement from the engine RPMs.
