Transmission Heat Exchanger - E39 540i 99-03, E38 740i/iL 99-01
Part of any cooling system overhaul on the 540i or 740i/iL should include a service for the automatic transmission heat exchanger (cooler). This block takes coolant from the radiator and uses it to cool the oil for the transmission. A blocked or faulty transmission cooler can lead to major transmission faults, harder or hesitating shifts, or even complete transmission failure. We recommend getting 2 new o-rings while replacing the the heat exchanger. il As part of every cooling system service we recommend cleaning or replacing the heat exchanger itself and the replacement of the hoses leading to it (see separate product).
