If you own a classic BMW, you already know that the E46 chassis is legendary for its handling. If you've noticed a clunking sound over bumps or your rear end is sagging on one side, you are likely dealing with a classic E46 headache, a broken rear coil spring.

Because they sit low in the rear control arm pocket, these barrel-style rear springs are highly prone to trapping moisture, road salt, and debris. Over time, rust takes over, micro-fractures develop, and the bottom coil snaps off entirely. A broken spring doesn't just ruin your ride height, it severely compromises your handling, ruins cornering predictability, and can even puncture a tire if the broken coil shifts.

We never recommend changing just one spring. If one has corroded and snapped, the other side has lived through the exact same road conditions and is likely right behind it. Always replace rear springs in pairs to ensure even ride height and balanced handling.
