E46s fuel filters are equipped with an integrated fuel pressure regulator, a unique design that makes skipping this service costly. A clogged fuel filter can lead to lower fuel pressure at the fuel rail's inlet, causing hard starting, hesitation, misfire faults, bank one and bank two lean mixture codes, and even stalling. A failing fuel pressure regulator can cause many similar symptoms.
