This plastic intake boot connects the mass air flow sensor, which is mounted to the intake muffler, to the throttle body. If your original plastic boot has cracked/split, airflow readings will be incorrect as unfiltered air is allowed to bypass the MAF sensor and enter the throttle body directly. This can result in issues with proper fuel delivery, possibly allowing for lean conditions due to unaccounted air volume.
