If the CV joints of the axle shaft are exposed to water and dirt they are very likely to fail prematurely.

If you have noticed a buildup of grease around your wheel well, the most likely cause is because your cv boot has torn, and is throwing the needed grease around your wheels and engine bay. When the boot is torn, it allows dirt and debris to contaminate the cv joint, which can cause damage and a costly repair.
