This rear guide rod for the E39 chassis helps to control the toe alignment of the car (the horizontal in/out angle of the tire). There is a rubber bushing on the inside and a ball joint on the outside mounting point. When the bushings on the arm wear out they can contribute to a 'wandering' or 'loose' or unstable feeling in the rear. There may also be a clunking noise associated with bumps. This arm is just one part of the rear suspension, and other parts should be checked to confirm which one is causing the issues. The E63 6-series Coupe may be BMW's Grand Tourer but there's no reason it can't run with the smaller BMW sports cars. One of the tricks to making the 645/650 handle better is lowering and firming up the suspension. This suspension package consists of H&R sport springs and Bilstein sport shocks and struts that will result in less bodyroll and a better balance through the corners.

H&R Sport springs lower the ride height by 1.2" in front and 1.0" in the back and stiffens the spring rate. Both combine to lower the car's center of gravity and reduce the amount of bodyroll in corners. The springs are progressive rate so their initial stiffness is actually very compliant and it becomes stiffer as the spring is compressed. This is great for street cars that see bumps and potholes where suspension compliance is key. Overall, they are about 40% stiffer than the stock original springs.

We use Bilstein Sport shocks as the dampers and they feature Bilstein's patented and innovative valving system. With this system, small bumps and impacts are absorbed as they should be. But the shocks stiffen for cornering and other suspension motions. It's the best of both worlds as the shock self-adjusts based on suspension motion. These fit with the stock strut and shock mounts, making for an easy and clean install.

These replacements from Febi are the perfect solution for worn mounts/bearings. Because they are factory OE parts, they fit perfectly in the mounting location and are the proper length and have the correct inside diameter for your struts. A small addition to any front suspension overhaul that can make a huge difference in overall ride quality. Priced each, but should always be replaced in pairs. To get the most out of your new suspension setup, it's recommended that you replace all parts that are known to fail. Not only will this make your new setup more effective, it will provide a better ride, proper tire position, and make all of your parts last longer. One often overlooked piece is the upper strut bearing and mount. This is the top mount for your struts and provides a solid platform for your front suspension. If worn, the bearings within this mount make noise, there is slop from worn rubber, and it can shorten the life of your shocks.
