A sloppy shifter is one of the common complaints of older BMWs. In addition to the shifter linkage the transmission mounts contribute to rough and clunky shifting. BMW transmission mounts are rubber and get softer over time. This allows the transmission to dance around which changes the geometry of the shift linkage and could make it harder to shift. These urethane transmission bushings are stiffer than the stock rubber mounts and won't let the transmission shift around as much. The round design also has more surface area than the stock mounts which helps spread the load. Because the urethane is stiffer, expect more vibration to make its way into the shift lever area. Engine motor mounts should also be considered as a cause for driveline vibration, transmission movement, and poor shifting. Consider replacing your motor mounts at the same time as your tranny mounts.

BMW claims their transmission fluid to be a "lifetime" fluid, however is recommended to be changed every 60,000 miles to ensure a longer transmission life. Though not exposed to the same level of heat and contamination as engine oil, transmission oil still breaks down over time due to heat and becomes contaminated as your transmission wears. Old contaminated oil can lead to excessive wear and tear on sensitive transmission components which could lead to slow shifting, slips, and even complete failure. This is also true for the transmission filter integrated into the transmission fluid pan. The filter removes metal particles from the transmission fluid and eventually begins to clog, preventing fluid from passing through the filter easily. Automatic transmissions are reliable, shift smoothly, and can last without issue so long as they are properly maintained. Over time, the transmission fluid becomes thick and the filter becomes contaminated with small metal particles. This can cause excess wear, high transmission operating temperatures, and eventual failure. To prevent this we recommend changing your filter, fluid, and seals to ensure your transmission continues to operate flawlessly. We recommend filter and fluid changes every 50,000 miles. Like the DCT oil pan, the plastic OEM hydraulics cover is prone to fatiguing from heat cycling; not ideal considering the important parts that reside behind it. And also like it's oil pan sibling, the Fall-Line hydraulics cover uses a bespoke Viton O-Ring that resides within a clever internal channel. Viton O-Rings, due to their exceptional resistance to temperature extremes (-20°F to 400°F operating temp) and low gas permeability, have incredible aging characteristics and therefore eliminate the need for regular replacement.
