The thermostat regulates the temperature of your coolant. At a predetermined temperature the thermostat will open to let coolant flow to the radiator and be cooled by airflow or the fan. Over time the thermostat will become stuck open or closed, leading to a variety of issues. A closed thermostat will never allow the coolant to reach the radiator and be cooled. Hot coolant will continue to circulate through the engine and absorb even more heat until boiling and the system overheats. An open thermostat is not as bad but is still not ideal - the coolant is always cool, with the temp needle always reading in the cool range. This tells the ECU to richen the fuel mixture to bring the car up to normal operating temp. So your fuel mileage decreases and the car runs rich.
Replacing the thermostat is an easy but messy job. This thermostat includes the main o-ring (but a housing gasket may be required). Consider replacing the housing and any associated temp sensors while you're in there. The cooling system will need to be bled after.

This Genuine BMW radiator expansion tank (coolant reservoir) is used on many BMW's with the N20, N51, N52 and N54 engines. Due to the higher operating temperatures of these engines plastic components are more susceptible to failure. This is the radiator drain plug (petcock valve) for manual transmission E82 and E9X models. The plug actually has two drains built in - the traditional blue petcock valve which is part of the hex head. If you drain the coolant from your radiator through this plug you could be in for a nasty surprise. The hex plug has tabs that lock it into position in the factory BMW radiator. Once it's installed the tabs lock in place. But if you remove the hex completely, the tabs snap off and the plug will no longer seal correctly! Do not drain your coolant without having one of these on hand as a spare! It's cheap insurance against a definite leak later on.

This coolant outlet hose connects the cylinder head to the thermostat housing and is a critical component of the cooling system. For many N54 owners, the "Mickey Mouse" flange is a common failure point. This plastic connector is vulnerable to degradation from heat, exposure to chemicals, and wear over time.
If your outlet hose has failed or the cylinder head flange is leaking, it’s best to replace the entire assembly for a reliable and long-lasting repair.
