BMWs turbocharged S55 engine uses a water-to-air charge air cooling system, with a front-mounted heat exchanger responsible for heat dissipation. Unfortunately, the factory single-row, 27mm core design is quick to heat soak under high load, leading to excessive intake air temperatures and potential limp mode conditions especially on modified or track-driven cars.

To solve this issue, we've developed a drop-in upgrade over the factory unit. Engineered for durability and maximum cooling efficiency, this heat exchanger is a must-have for high-horsepower street builds, spirited canyon driving, and extended track sessions. Built from TIG-welded 5052 aluminum, our design eliminates the factory plastic end tanks one of the systems most common failure points. Each heat exchanger features CNC-machined billet aluminum hose connections, mounting flanges, and brackets for perfect OE fitment and trouble-free installation.

By replacing the OEM 27mm single-row core with a robust 35mm dual-row design, this heat exchanger dramatically increases both cooling capacity and surface area. Frontal area jumps from 307mm to 475mm, resulting in a 100% increase in coolant volume and significantly improved heat-soak resistance. The outcome? Lower, more stable charge air temperatures that help your S55 deliver consistent, reliable power on the street or at the track.

BMW has a knack for maintaining its stake as the benchmark when it comes to performance luxury vehicles, with the F8X generation being no exception. The S55 that powers the 2015–2020 BMW F8X M3, M4 and M2 Competition is dripping with technology, which includes an air-to-water intercooler as a means of keeping cool. Where BMW’s intercooler design was enough to help bring this generation of mid-sized M’s to their peak, we here at Mishimoto found some weaknesses that we felt obliged to address. We started with the end tanks. The Mishimoto Performance Air-to-Water Intercooler features full, cast aluminum end tanks, TIG-welded to our bar-and-plate core for maximum durability as you increase the boost in your Bimmer. Our end tanks also include internal air diverters on both the inlet and outlet to ensure an even flow of charged air through the core. When it comes to the core, bigger is better, and we were able to expand the size of our core in all dimensions, resulting in a 29% increase in core volume while abstaining from any modifications when it comes to the installation. Our new core also features a unique single-pass internal fin layout for the coolant passage for optimal heat transfer from the charged air to the coolant. With our improvements combined, we saw the Mishimoto 2015–2020 BMW F8X M3 and M4 Performance Intercooler increase flow through the core by 16% and recorded a 12°F drop in intake air temperatures when tested with the Mishimoto Performance Heat Exchanger. We also recorded an average increase of 11 whp and 8 wtq during our testing with peak gains of up to 31 whp and 10 wtq. Improve the cooling capacity for your 2015–2020 BMW M3 or M4 with the Mishimoto Performance Heat Exchanger. Air-to-water intercooling is a means of more efficient heat transfer from the charged air, but it now requires an additional heat exchanger mounted to the front of the vehicle in order to dissipate the transferred heat. The S55 powering the F8X generation of M’s packs quite a punch thanks to the A2W system. While the BMW engineers laid the foundation for dissipating heat from the intercooling system, we still saw some room to improve on their design. We started by eliminating any bits of plastic and promptly replaced the end tanks, including the inlet and outlet ports, with durable aluminum. We kept the dual-pass flow through the core for maximum cooling properties while expanding the core into the available space. Our new design features a 42mm thick core while extending the height by 150 mm, totaling in a 60% increase in core volume and a 180% increase in fin surface area. The end result of our improvements is a 10°F drop in global intercooling temperatures over the stock unit. Size isn’t the only thing that matters with this heat exchanger. Since the heat exchanger sits front and center in the M3 and M4’s cooling stack, it’s susceptible to damage from road debris. To keep your air-to-water system safe, our heat exchanger comes equipped with an optional steel mesh stone guard for an added layer of protection for the fins. We also incorporated a variable fin pitch for the lower 12 rows on the core in order to facilitate cooling to DCT-equipped M's. Finally, our 2015–2020 BMW F8X M3/M4 Performance Heat Exchanger includes the Mishimoto Lifetime Warranty for a worry-free install.
